Dear Families

Welcome to our 2016 school year. Thank you to everyone – parents, staff and stu-dents, who contributed to such a smooth beginning yesterday. It was wonderful to see all our students and family members so excited as they embarked on the next stage of their respective learning journeys at Darlington Primary and to see all stu-dents happily engaged in a variety of learning experiences throughout Day 1. I have no doubt this is just the beginning of many more exciting adventures. I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our new kindergarten students and new students at other year levels. I am sure they and their families have experienced a friendly introduction to our community and I look forward to getting to know them better as the year progresses. We have commenced the year with an enrolment in excess of 400 students, which is wonderful but has resulted numbers being very tight in some classes. Staff met on Friday and agreed to maintain the current structure for the start of the school year, however if we have an influx of enrolments in certain year levels it could present some challenges. Staffing 2016 Attached to this newsletter is a list of the school staff for 2016. We welcome three new staff members: Ms Jacinta Bartrop, Miss Zoe Harper and Mrs Mandy Osenton in fixed term positions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Trish Paice, Natalie Scott, Rebecca Preisig, Claire Jones and Brenda Cassin for the outstanding contribu-tions they have made to Darlington Primary during their time here. Some teachers have assumed slightly different roles for this year. Attached to this newsletter is the staffing arrangements for 2016. Student Requirements Please ensure that your children have all of the items that were listed on the Students Requirements Lists as well as Items for Students’ Personal Use information. This in-cludes both stationery and extra equipment such as art shirts, library bags, tissues and supplementary items specific to year levels. Parent Information Evenings These meetings provide an opportunity for teachers to inform families of the procedures and timetables of each class and are also a wonderful opportunity for new families to meet members of our school community. Rather than have one evening of meetings as was advertised on the Term Calendar, these meetings will be conducted over the course of the next three weeks. Parents are encouraged to make supervision arrangements for children as is not appropriate for them to attend such meetings. If you are unable to attend, please advise your child’s teacher. Thank you for your support. Times and dates are as follows:

Bushfire Preparedness The recent tragic bushfire in the Yarloop area and events near our quarry a couple of weeks ago served as a reminder for us to ready to respond effectively in such a situation. Our thoughts are with the families of Yarloop and surrounding areas who have lost their homes, and also to the staff and students of Yarloop Primary who have lost their wonderful school. We will be conducting a money chain on Friday 12th February to raise funds for those affected. Donations are most welcome. Darlington Primary has a well-developed Bushfire Response Plan that has been approved by both the Department of Education and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. A copy of the plan accompanies this newsletter. Be sure to make yourselves familiar with the arrangements that it outlines. As part of the school’s planning, we will be practising a bushfire evacuation drill next week. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services’ website has a wealth of important information also http://www.dfes.wa.gov.au/alerts/Pages/default.aspx I look forward to working with you all throughout 2016 as we progress the education of our children. DARLINGTON PRIMARY DRESS CODE POLICY Rationale Darlington Primary is a Sun Smart School. Our dress code is for all Kindergarten (optional) to Year 6 students. Our school dress code:

fosters and enhances the public image of the school assists in building school and team spirit ensures students are safely dressed for specific school activities encourages equity among students; and prepares students for work, as many work places have dress and safety codes

From 2007 the Department of Education and Training requires all schools to incorporate the exclusion of denim in all dress code policies. Therefore students are required to adhere to the ‘no denim’ policy at all times. On occasions for fund raising or social functions sanctioned by the school the wearing of denim will be acceptable. Families will be advised of these events through the normal communication procedures as appropriate. Guidelines and Strategies

Uniforms will include items on the attached list. These are available from the uniform shop. Items may be ordered via forms or through visiting the uniform shop at the advertised opening hours.

Appropriate footwear must be worn with white socks/sports socks. Students are expected to take part in regular physical activity so joggers and trainers are the most appropriate footwear. Thongs, sandals and heeled shoes are not suitable.

Faction shirts can be worn for physical education lessons and sports days/carnivals. As Darlington Primary is a SunSmart School, students will be required to wear the school’s wide

brimmed, bucket or legionnaire’s hat every term. Students without hats will be asked to sit in shad-ed areas/verandahs.

Hair past collar length needs to be tied up for health reasons. A wrist watch, studs/sleepers can be worn. For safety reasons, other items of jewellery may not be

worn. Exemptions will be granted if there are cultural/medical reasons for particular jewellery. Nail polish, make up and fake tattoos are not to be worn. Graduating Year 6 students will have the option to wear a Graduands polo shirt and/or a Leavers

Jacket. Parents will be informed of costs and designs.

If a student does not adhere to the requirements of the dress code these steps will be followed:

The class teacher will explain to the student the need to be in uniform. If the student is still out of uniform, the class teacher will contact parents and remind them

of the school dress code requirements. If the student is still out of uniform, the class teacher will inform Administration who will li-

aise with the parents.

Students may be granted an exemption from the dress code requirements on religious or health grounds, or at the Principal’s discretion. Exemptions must be applied for through the office.

WELCOME BACK

Hope everyone had a restful holiday and ready for 2016 !

We had a slow, but not an 'out of the norm' start to canteen on Monday,

which allowed us to cook and restock for next few days ahead. It was so

lovely to once again see familiar faces come to the counter telling us all

about their holidays and of course ordering their favourite lunches,

snacks, etc.

Here's an update on Sushi for this week : We are currently outsourcing

our sushi through a company called Pink Rice in Fremantle and a mini-

mum of $50 in orders is required before delivery to Darlington. As we

have only one pre-order for this week, I have decided to temporarily take

Sushi off the menu and will reassess in Week 2 when canteen is a little

busier.

ALTERNATIVE PLAN : I'm not an expert at making sushi, so it would be

fantastic if there was a wonderful volunteer in our school community who

would like to come in and make sushi each Wednesday at canteen ?

Wouldn't that be better than outsourcing, plus keep the costs down ??

We would use only the best ingredients and of course be additive free. If

you are keen just let me know.

In the meantime while Sushi is out of stock, you can order my Rice Paper

Rolls which are additive and gluten free and pretty similar to sushi.

**** Always remember if you have any queries regarding canteen, whether it is ingredients in food, forgotten lunches, volunteering, etc. - please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will always try and help. **** The P&C Canteen thanks you for your continued support at Darlington Primary School. Regards, Canteen Lady :) Submitted by : Tracy Roache - Canteen Co-ordinator School Phone: 9299 6888 ~ a/h: mobile: 0412 800 985 Email Contact: [email protected]
