Supporting Dartington International Summer School

About DartingtonDartington is a place of learning and experiment. We act in three broad areas: the arts, the promotion of a fairer society and the future of our planet. Working in partnership with pioneering thinkers, teachers, artists and social entrepreneurs, Dartington addresses some of the significant issues of our time.

We do this in three ways:

• by setting up our own initiatives and programmes, building on our skills, resources and heritage

• by offering the time, space and stimulation for others to develop and test promising ideas

• by inspiring a wide community of artists, thinkers and activists through our work and the exceptional environment we provide Dartington is an independent organisation, trading ethically and sustainably as a social enterprise in order to fund our pioneering work.

A Cottage on Dartmoor [PG]

+ Short Film: Buster Keaton in One WeekSun 18 Nov 8pmDIRECTOR: Anthony AsquithCAST: Norah Baring, Uno Henning, Hans Adalbert Sweden/UK 1929 / B&W / 1hr 28m

A Cottage on Dartmoor is an embroiled melodrama, a tale of love and revenge, set on the bleak landscape of Dartmoor. Overlooked by critics more eager to heap praise upon his contemporary, Hitchcock, Asquith’s films display the same skill in inventive story-telling and technical artistry. One of the very last silent films to be made in Britain before the talkies revolutionised cinema, it’s a virtuoso piece of filmmaking; a final passionate cry in defence of an art form soon to be obsolete.

Autumn ResidenciesSupporting and nurturing artists through the provision of the very best facilities and career supportOver the past year, we have worked hard to enable more artists to develop their professional practice here in a stable, well managed and supportive environment with access to high-quality studios. Our residency programme now has 3 strands: Work/Live Residencies for artists or groups who need the space to explore and create during an immersive period; our Open Call Award which brings together artists and provides free studios and support; and Standby Space, where artists can register to use spaces ‘at the drop of a hat’.We provide opportunities for engagement with our communities and audiences and we always encourage risk-taking which can have a profound impact on an artist’s work.

Film: Taking the Michaelby Ian Nesbitt and Matthew Pountney Friday 7 December, 8pm, Studio 2

An Out/Side/Film Production

‘Taking The Michael’ traces two reunited friends’ faltering odyssey down the St Michael’s Ley Line through South West England - from Wiltshire, through Devon, to St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall. Travelling in a pedal-powered 1968 Bond Ranger on ancient byways and green lanes, the pair’s curious pilgrimage is a surreal post-peak oil exploration of this green and pleasant land.

Join us for this very special evening with the filmmakers and discover more about the people they met along their way.
