Coursework EE -5101-F (Data Entry) for SPSS Ver 20 ( DR SEE KIN HAI  )

A science teacher wanted to gauge the attitude of students towards science in rural areas of Brunei. He

wanted to know whether there is a significant difference in their attitude towards science by level of

education (i.e. Year 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 or equivalent of Form 1,2,3,4 or 5), gender (male=1 or female=2)

and ethnic group (Malay=1, Chinese=2, Kadazan / Dusun = 3, Murut=4, Others=5). For this purpose ,

he prepared a questionnaire that consisted of 2 parts: Part A: Respondents’ demographic background,Part B: Attitude towards science in school assessment questionnaire modified from Germann (1984).

(Likert scale: SD=1, D=2, A=3, SA=4 reverse for negative items, Missing value = 999)

(The following sample showed the response from a student)

You should enter into your computer as:Id School Form Gender Race S1 S2 S3 S4 S5 S6 S7 S8 S9 S10 S11 S12 S13 S14

(Note the negative items are S2, S7, S10, S14)

How do you do it

1. Open the data file and select [Transform] on the menu bar

2. Click on [Recode into same variable] and open the dialogue box below. Then select all the

negative items S2, S7, S10 and S14 and move them to the [(Numeric) Variables] box below.

3. Click on [Old and New Values] to open the dialogue box4. Type 1 in the [Old Value] box and 4 in the [New Value] box then [Add] to bring to larger box

[Old --- New] below. Repeat for 2 to 3, 3 to 2 and 4 to 1.

4

20 for Windows

SPSS 20

Recode the negative items into the same variable

5. Click [Continue] them [OK]. You will notice all the scores for Items 2, 7, 10 and 14 will be

recoded in your data file. The Values for these negative items in the Variable View were alsochanged as SA=1 (not 4 as originally coded), A=2 (not 3) D =3 (not 2) and SD = 4(not 1).

How to keep the original raw data and create new items for negative statements such as S2a,

S7a, S10a and S14a

1. Open the data file and click on [Transform] on the menu bar and then click on [Recode Into

Different Variables] to open the dialogue box.2. Select item [S2] and bring into the [Input Variable --- Output Variable ] box

3. On the [Output Variable] type [S2a] inside the [Name] box and [Soalan 2a] inside the [Label] box and click [Change]. Repeat for S7, S10 and S14.

You have created 4 new items, S2a, S7a, S10a and S14a so the total should be 18 items. Now you

have to reverse the scores on the Likert Scale for these negative items.

4. Click on [Old and New Values] to open the [Recode into Different Variables: Old and New

Values] dialogue box

5. Type [1] in the [Value] box under [Old Value] and [4] in the [Value] box of [New Value] then

[Add] to move to [Old – New] box below. Now repeat for [2] for [3], [3] for [2] and [4] for

[1]. Clock [Continue] then [OK].
