The contents of fifty Smarties tubes were counted, the results in the table below:

Number of Smarties

58 59 60 61 62 63

Frequency 5 15 20 7 2 1

• How many tubes had at least 61 smarties in?• How many tubes had less than 60 smarties in?• What is the probability of choosing a tube with exactly 60

smarties in?• How would find out many smarties were there all together?• How would you then find the mean number of smarties?• What is the modal number of smarties?• What is the median number of smarties?• Sketch a bar chart to represent this data

The heights of thirty sunflower plants are measured exactly one month after planting, the results are grouped in the table below:

• What is the modal group?• Estimate the mean height of the sunflower plants (Calc question –

doh!)• Which group contains the median height?• Draw a grouped frequency diagram to represent this data• Draw a frequency polygon to represent this data

Data Handling In a game of chance two sets of cards, one blue numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

& 6 the other red numbered 2, 4, 6, 8 & 10. One card of each colour is picked at random and the numbers on each multiplied together. Complete the table below:

What is the probablility that the score will be odd? What is the probablility that the score will be a multiple of 5? The player wins if they score less than 10. If a person plays the game

once, what is the probability that they will win the game? If 120 people each play the game once, how many would we expect to

win? If it costs £1 to play the game, and you get £5 if you win, how much

profit does the game make?

And finally… You’ll have plenty of time so DON’T rush. Read through paper before starting – parts of your brain will start

thinking about later questions whilst your on the easier ones. Read each question carefully and make sure that you understand what

it’s asking you to do before you start answering it. When you’ve finished an answer, check back to make sure it seems

sensible and answers the question. Draw any diagrams or graphs using a pencil so you can rub out any

mistakes If you get stuck, think for a minute, if no joy move on to next question.

Your brain will keep mulling over the stuck one. If you want to replace a mistake, just cross it out so the examiner can

still see it. Don’t obliterate it. When you get to the end of the paper, go back and retry the ones you

got stuck on. Don’t leave any question unanswered if possible. Go with a hunch or have a guess. The only questions you are certain to get no marks for are ones you haven’t tried.
