Data visualization greatly enhances not only data comprehension, it allows for a greater coverage of trends and patterns within structured & unstructured data.

The Data Visualization Summit brings together leaders and experts in the field to   explain and clarify the numerous benefits of using data visualization. One of the top benefits is that data is easier to understand and is more accessible in this format such that people can better interact with the data and analyze it.

Typically data is used for mining and reporting, however there are a new set data visualization

tools that can take your data analysis to a whole new level. It is now possible to quickly understand trends, patterns, and outliers that would not have been noticed with traditional tools.

A huge benefit of having greater visibility and accessibility allows more better insight into your business.

The Data Visualization Summit will run concurrently with the Big Data Innovation Summit to add to these fantastic networking opportunities.

About The Summit

Previous Featured Speaker

“Pundits insisted the presidential race was a toss-up, but "polling aggregators" - who analyse polls to make predictions - were being criticised for favouring President Obama. Not any more.” [BBC]

Drew Linzer is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Emory University, and a 2012-13 Visiting Assistant Professor at Stanford University. He received a Ph.D. from UCLA in 2008. A statistician and expert in public opinion, Dr. Linzer has published research in journals including the Journal of the American Statistical Association, American Political Science Review, Political Analysis, and the Journal of Statistical Software. Forecasting the 2012 Presidential Election from History and the Polls

A big story of the 2012 presidential election was the "victory of the quants" - a triumph of data over intuition.   While traditional pundits portrayed the race as neck-and-neck, pollsters and polling analysts confidently and accurately predicted that President Obama would win reelection. How was this done?  Drew will talk about the dynamic Bayesian forecasting model he used at votamatic.org to call the outcome of all fifty states, as early as June. Combining the results of nearly 1,000 pre-election polls - representing over 700,000 individual interviews - the site offered real-time opinion tracking, state- and national-level forecasting, and commentary on the race. After the election, Drew's forecasts were widely recognized as among the best of the campaign.

Andy Kriebel is a data visualization guru and Tableau expert at Facebook. He is also the creator of vizwiz.blogspot.com, a popular data visualization blog.Andy’s foray into data visualization began with building project management dashboards for teams in Vietnam in 2005. His passion exploded when he began using Tableau in 2007. Since then, his drive has led to a life-changing opportunity at Facebook. In August 2009 he launched vizwiz.blogspot.com, which provides examples of data visualization best practices, methods for improving existing work, and tips and tricks with Tableau Software. Andy is one of seven Tableau Zen Masters in the world.

Collaborative Change at Facebook, One Data Viz at a Time

Facebook has defined a new standard for the world when it comes to social networking. A relentless focus on being a data-driven company is one of the underpinnings of this success. However, as Stephen Few said, “More of the right data can be useful, but more for the sake of more does nothing but complicate our lives.” This session will describe how data visualization has been deployed at Facebook to answer the questions that are hidden deep inside the data. You’ll find out what has been done and the tools that are used that has led to massive adoption.

Ryan McKeel is a senior web architect at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.   He uses his passions for web-based entrepreneurship and data visualization to innovate on the international Open Energy Information Platform, OpenEI.org.  Ryan created a web design startup at the age of 14, and has since worked with the Air Force Research Laboratory, the DARPA COORDINATORs program and now NREL on advanced data sharing and visualization applications.  Ryan's work has supported the Energy Data Initiative, the Open Government Directive and has enabled open data sharing for the U.S. Department of Energy and millions of international users.   Ryan holds a B.S. in IT and Entrepreneurship from Rensselaer

Polytechnic Institute.  He lives in Denver, Colorado with his wife and three young children, and he is a classical and jazz pianist.

Energy Visualizations: deriving insight from complex, crowdsourced data

NREL's Data Analysis and Visualization group specializes in taking complex, crowdsourced, time-series data and making it browsable and understandable.   Careful data curation and analysis enables the creation of a variety of maps, applications and public APIs which expand insight and inform decisions.  This session will review several case studies where crowdsourced and analyst-generated datasets have become rich applications and compelling

Mathieu Bastian is a Senior Data Scientist at LinkedIn where he focuses on building new data products using machine learning, social network analysis and data visualization. Mathieu is also Gephi's co-founder and technical leader, the leading open-source large network visualization software.

Visualizing Big Graph Data

In this talk, I'll explore the tools and techniques for large network visualizations. Networks are everywhere (social networks, cells, mobile phones, diseases, email networks, internet infrastructure etc.) and become increasingly complex and interconnected. I'll use real examples to illustrate the best practices in visualizing networks and understand them. I'll also review current challenges and give a quick update on Gephi's future roadmap.

Creating a Community Around Data Visualization

How do you provide services that are useful to a community of designers, journalists, data scientists, animators, and developers? Visually has been building an online community of professionals in the field of data visualization. We’ve built several sets of features, and had some successes and some shortcomings. These are some of our experiences and some of what we learned about the process of supporting a community, as well as some of what we have planned for the future.

He holds a Master's degree from the School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley.

Don't Look Now: The Dangers of Data Visualization

Data visualization is a powerful way to analyze data, derive meaningful insights, and tell compelling stories. But it can also confuse, obscure, and misrepresent data when used poorly, burying real insight and misleading your audience. The very aspects that make visualization a powerful tool - such as its ability to compress huge amounts of informat ion into a s ing le , eas i ly comprehensible image - can also make it dangerous. In this presentation I'll walk through a rogue's gallery of worst practices, explaining their pitfalls and how to avoid

Krist is a data visualization scientist at Twitter, where he spent time digging into big data and applied visualization techniques to make use of these rich and complex datasets. Before joining Twitter, he received his PhD from University of Maryland under the supervision of Dr. Ben Shneiderman. His dissertation work includes new visualization techniques that can compress a large number of event sequences into one picture. He also spent summer internships at Microsoft Research and IBM Research. His visualization work at IBM led to several publications and was later included as part of IBM Healthcare Analytics Solution.

Visualizations for Event Sequences Exploration

Many aspects of our lives can be captured and described as series of events, or event sequences. These event sequences can be keys to understanding many things: medical services, logistics, sports, user behavior, etc. In this presentation, I will talk about techniques for visualizing event sequences and also describe several case studies that demonstrate the power of visualizations in exploring and understanding event sequences.
