From the Principal’s desk
Congratulations to all the cross-country runners who represented the
school and the district at the State Schools Cross Country
championships in Melbourne last week.
All the students did very well with Brady coming 5th overall which
was a terrific result. The students also had a very good article and
photo in the Portland Observer and looked very professional in
their cross country windcheaters.
Thanks to Casey and Susan for doing a good job in organising this
event. Also a big thank-you to the Glenelg Shire and the Portland
Junior Sport fund who helped the students participate.
Minister Merlino
The Minister of Education, the Rt Hon James Merlino, will again be
visiting Portland Bay School next Wednesday and will be meeting
with staff and students and looking over the progress of planning for
the new school.
The school council president, Debra Robinson, and I will meet with
the minister to discuss the school plans.
Welcome
Welcome to Tara Hulonce the new Principal at Bundarra PS.
The Portland Bay School looks forward to working with Tara and the
Bundarra PS on our mutual interests and maintaining the bond
between our two schools. There was a very nice feature article in
this week’s Portland Observer welcoming Tara to the district.
Parent Opinion Survey
The new parent opinion survey will be sent home in the next few
days. I encourage all families to complete the survey as it provides
the school with valuable feedback on what you think about the work
we do with your children. All surveys are completely anonymous
and everyone who returns a survey is included in the draw for a
voucher for dinner at the Portland RSL.
Caught being good
Very well done to our Caught being good winners at last week’s
assembly. Damon Miller, Jaxson Keillor, Bart Rowley,
Akaysha Morrison, Noah Reed and Kyle Quinton.
Keep up the good work!
Enjoy your weekend …………….Steve Crossley, Principal.

Words on Wellbeing - Sue Cowie
George, Kuku Yalanji & Dorothea
Dorothea Mackellar wrote a poem entitled My Country. She also made the comment in her lifetime that equated
serenity with either the bush or the sea. For wellbeing, our souls need nourishment; our minds need rest and our
bodies need to feel the earth beneath our feet. George said this too through his stories.
Nothing enhances the special needs of our
children better than exposure to our amazing
environment: the tranquility of the foreshore,
Nun’s Beach, the Great South West Walk or
just a sighting of a whale, dolphin or a fat seal.
So when in Cairns last weekend, our guide
George, a Kuku Yalanji elder of the Daintree,
held us spellbound, with stories of his country.
It was then, I thought of our children at the Bay
and how special story-telling becomes to pass
on a legacy.
These stories of the Dreamtime are not written
down, as with Dorothy Mackellar’s poems, but
are equally important.
You cannot help but be refreshed and renewed. I was privileged to see this rainforest that Attenborough visited.
It is the oldest in the world and can you believe, in the 80’s, logging occurred? Thankfully it remains now as a
heritage-listed place of spiritual and natural beauty where tree-climbing kangaroos abound; rainforest dragons,
pre-historic dinosaur salt water crocodiles and Cassowary’s inhabit.
George reminded me that wellbeing is sourced through the land. Dorothea knew that.
Group 5 visited Heywood
District Secondary College
on Tuesday to participate in
Deakin University’s Display
of
“Visual
Reality
Glasses”
and information session.
