JANUARY 2015JANUARY 2015JANUARY 2015
Dear BASS Families,
The start of a New Year… ask yourself
these questions.
Who should I spend more time with
to help them be the best that they
can be?
Who should I send a note of appre-
ciation to that has had or currently
has a positive influence on my life?
Who should I call on that I have not
spoken to in quite some time and
ask him/her what I can do for them
to brighten their day?
Who brings a smile to my face when
I think of him/her and that I should
let them know why he/she brings a
smile when thought of?
 Who can I trust?
Who would I drop everything for
and come to their side in a time of
need and why?
Who is willing to go the extra mile
for me in a time of need and why?
 Who inspires me and why?
 What does a healthy relationship
with others look like to me?
I once was told that asking great ques-
tions leads to great outcomes. How can we
as adults role model this way of thinking
for children? First, one would have to em-
brace that this is something that is worth-
while for children and adults. Secondly, it
would need to be a priority. Often we only
make changes in areas that are of high
priority. Lastly, being on the receiving end
of a great question may allow you to feel
the positive affect and cause you to want
to do that for others.
The world is spinning swiftly with tech-
nology. We are inundated with choices of
activities and entertainment, while never
having truly experienced life at a slower
pace such as in the early 1900’s. This
leaves us with a mighty task at hand—How
to cultivate healthy relationships, how to
spend quality time with one another, and
how to talk at the dinner table without a
device at hand? How to truly give value to
the one we care most for? How to prepare
children for the future roles they will have
in leadership?
So consider this year to be the year to
ask great questions. Pass along your ex-
perience of doing so to another. Be mind-
ful of making today the best it can be while
moving forward to the days ahead.

Newsworthy Notes and Helpful Information
2014 Tax Statements—Due to BASS implementing a new billing system for the 2014-15 school year, par-
ents who had children enrolled in the BASS program from January through August 2014 will have 2 sepa-
rate statements for the 2014 tax year. Statements for August through December can be obtained on the
BASS website through the parent portal link with your email address and password. Tax statements for
January through the first of August can be obtained by contacting the BASS Admin office at (816) 986-

leaving our buildings that the door closes completely behind you. For security
purposes, we request that each family be buzzed in separately and no one holds
a door open for other individuals entering. We appreciate your cooperation as
we strive to maintain a safe environment for all
families.
Donations Needed! - BASS would appreciate donations of empty 2-liter
pop bottles for use with one of our Spring Break projects. Please rinse

ience. Thank you for helping collect the necessary supplies for a fun and

Longview Farm kids have been very busy! We did a really cool science experiment watching colors mix and change, we
made tissue paper wreaths, and our newest staff member, Dylan, had fun switching hats! Mr. Doug poses with the
older kids club before they take over the gym (looking natural, of course), while the younger kids show off their rein-
deer gear. Happy New Year!!!

December has been a busy month for Sunset Valley Kids Country! We
started our “Secret Service” project where our kiddos all became Secret
Service Agents to perform anonymous random acts of kindness and re-
ported their missions to Santa through Kids Country HQ at the front ta-
ble! Our Older Kids worked together to make a Billy Goats Gruff bridge
out of popsicle sticks and clay, as well as created hot air balloons to help
them reach their goals, and made videos illustrating our character trait of
the month, Kindness! Our Elf on the Shelf, Buddy, has gotten pretty ad-
venturous this year and has started a school-wide search for his latest
antic every morning! Our kiddos have had a lot of fun and are ready for a
well-deserved winter break.
Westview Kids Country jumped at the opportunity to give back to their
school. We were asked to decorate table cloths for a special lunch be-
fore winter break. The kids enjoyed coming up with themes for each of
the 12 table cloths. Some tables were winter/holiday themed; some
had “Happy Holidays” written in different languages; and others were
covered in stockings, presents or ornaments.

Cold Exposure Injuries
If a person is outside during cold
weather, especially in wet or windy con-
ditions, it is easy to sustain injuries from
Cold Exposure. These injuries can be mi-
nor, or deadly. Please remember to dress
for the weather this winter.
Types of Injuries:
Hypothermia---Occurs when the body
loses heat faster than it can make heat. Symptoms include
shivering, exhaustion, and shallow breathing. The low
body temperature can affect the brain resulting in symp-
toms such as confusion and drowsiness. If severe, it can
affect the heart causing an irregular heartbeat leading to
heart failure and death.
Frostnip---Usually affects skin on the face, ears, or fin-
gertips. It can cause numbness or blue-
white skin color for a short time. After
warming, everything returns to normal.
Frostbite---Is freezing of the skin and the tissues under
the skin. The skin looks pale or blue and feels cold, numb
and stiff or rubbery. This can cause permanent damage to
the skin and surrounding tissues.
For more detailed information on causes, symptoms
and treatment of Cold Exposure Injuries please go to the
internet and type in Cold Exposure or Hypothermia. You
can also visit the following web sites for further informa-
tion.

AIQ (Awareness, Inclusion, Quality) Committee— At our
first meeting, the members of the AIQ Committee settled
on pursuing an enrichment activity for the sites. In Febru-
ary, all of the sites will be taking part in a really awesome
program that will be given by the students from Summit
International Studies Academy. There are four teams of
these students and every one of our sites will receive a
visit from one of these teams. Our students will be given
the opportunity to learn some amazing items of informa-
tion about students in other cultures. We look forward to
working with these students.
Chore Core— We continue to work on incorporating
STEM into our curriculum for both the school year and
summer. To accomplish this we have 3 members of our
Chore Core committee that are attending a Science Pio-
neer workshop. The first workshop in December was on
Engineering and the next one will be Force in Motion in
January. The third workshop in February will be Rock and
Roll where we will be identifying and studying rocks and
minerals. Interested individuals can go to the Science Pio-
neer website to get more details and information on the
actual classes offered for Science, Technology, Engineer-
ing and Math.
TEAM BASS— T.E.A.M BASS welcomes you to 2015! We
are excited about the new KC Cubbies-UW preschool facil-
ity that will open on January 6 and all the new possibilities
of incorporating a preschool playground into the Garden
design. We continue to collaborate with local colleges to
implement a Recruitment plan for BASS.
Below are the dates of future meetings to add to your
calendar if you would like to be involved in providing
feedback and input for these meetings. Meetings are
held at the Bernard Campbell Middle School Media Cen-
ter, 1201 NE Colbern Road from 6:30 PM—7:30 PM

Nurse Christy’s Corner
This year’s Parents’ Night Out theme was The Grinch. We had approximately 40 kids who came to Prairie View to eat
pizza, play games, and watch Jim Carey’s version of The Grinch movie. To top it off, Belfonte donated four large tubs of
ice cream so the kids got to make ice cream sundaes and share them with their parents at pick up along with some hot
chocolate. Our very generous families also donated items to the district’s Back Snack program. We were able to col-
lect an entire grocery cart full of food! We also appreciated having several metro businesses donate prizes for a draw-
ing give-a-way. Congratulations to the winners of the prizes which are listed below:
$25 Lee’s Summit Parks and Rec gift card
Courtney W.—Mason Elementary
Summit Hickory Pit gift set
Connor W.—Richardson Elementary
$75 Alter Egos Photography gift certificate
Riley and Logan S.—Prairie View Elementary
$25 BASS gift certificate
