Give, Fly awards. Afterwards we hope you will all stay and enjoy a simple meal together, catered by our hardworking fundraising team. We’d like to extend our very sincere thanks to Kerry Elliott and her many helpers. Thanks also to old scholar Joel Schroeder for assisting with sound and light, and to the parents who came along to make costumes.

Volunteers’ Afternoon Tea We invite all community members who have volunteered in any capacity this year, to come and join us for afternoon tea catered by the staff in the staff room at school at 2:45pm next Wednesday December 12th. We look forward to being able to thank all of you for the important contribution you all make to our school.

The Farewell Assembly Friday 14th at 1.50 is the final assembly of the year where we say goodbye to our Year 7s and welcome our new Year 7 leaders for next year. The Terrific Kids Awards for term 4 will also be presented at this assembly.

Congratulations There are a number of others who deserve our sincere congratulations this week:

Our Lego League team for doing so well at the state finals, coming 18th out of 32 teams. This is our first time in the finals and is a significant achievement!

Trent Richardson and Felix Gadomski–Mott for representing our district at the SAPSASA state cricket carnival.

Ben Hogan for representing our district at the SAPSASA state tennis carnival.

Phyre Hockham and Ella Cobbledick for their participation in the Premier’s Reading Challenge prize presentation at the Adelaide Zoo

Luke Squiers for winning the Civics and Citizenship award presented by John Gardiner our local member for Morialta, and Minister for Education.

Staffing and classes 2019 Next year the class structure will be the same as in 2018: Reception class (Mrs Carol Measday), Year 1/2 (Katie Martin), Year 2/3 (Stephen Tsiaprakas), Year 4/5 (Lizzie Kemp) and Year 6/7 (Sallie Griffin). I am very pleased to announce that this week Lizzie Kemp was offered another one year contract here and is back with us again for 2019.

Skip

Next week there will be a rubbish skip in the yard for our end of year clean up. There may be a few items of furniture we no longer need, and we welcome families to take these if they wish, free of charge. Anything adjacent to the bin is fine to take, but we ask adults to collect these, not children. Inside the bin there will be broken glass and sharp objects, and we ask that items in the bin are left there untouched. Thank you!

Peace Project and 3D Printing Finally I received a letter this week from Jim Goodall, Senior Leader Learning Improvement Primary, who saw our students at the 3D printing Showcase on Monday. He spoke so enthusiastically about our students and their high quality learning that I’d like to share it with you:

Big congratulations to you all on the quality and excellence of your showcase, your presentation and behaviour and the wonderful way you engaged with the whole process at the 3D Printing Expo at the Wayville Showgrounds yesterday. I was tremendously impressed with the planning, teaching and learning that has obviously occurred at Uraidla. What was on display is testament to the passion and inspiration of your teachers and everyone at Uraidla for the way you incorporated the 3D Printing into not just your classroom but also that great Peace Project. The design thinking, ‘engineering processes’ and real-world problem solving conversations that were on display from you as part of the showcase certainly are a vital component of our developing ‘world class education’, and 21st Century learning models that the students have embraced.

As this is the final newsletter of the year I’d like to wish you all a wonderful summer break together. I hope you enjoy the holiday and create some special family memories in the next 6 weeks!

Round the Classes

Reception: This week we are running the Assembly and have thought of the events we have enjoyed throughout the year. It was fun to think back on where we started and just how far we have come. In between we are getting into the Christmas spirit with handmade decorations. We are especially pleased with our nature wreaths. Look out for them on your tree.

Year 1/2: We have been finishing off our procedures. We have also been collecting and interpreting data. In art we have been making decorations for our Christmas tree.

Year 2/3: We are all excited and busy with preparation for the school concert. We have practised our moves and lines as well as the lyrics to the whole school song Year 4/5: Woowee! Almost the end of the year! It has been a fantastic year in the year 4/5 class. The students have shown such determination and dedication to their learning this year, it has been extremely impressive. Well done year 4/5 class.

This semester our class was part of a 3D printing project in primary schools from around the state. On Monday we sent six representatives to the final segment of this programme, which was a showcase at Wayville Showgrounds of all of the year 4/5 work as well as the work we completed with the year 6/7 class. The students who attended this event had to write a submission as to why they should represent our school. Whilst at the showcase these students got to explore another 50 schools’ 3D printing projects. They were also able to gather ideas for our future projects, explain our projects, converse with these students from other schools and give feedback on the other projects they saw. This was such an amazing day to listen and watch our students articulate their learning journey; their successes, their failures and their challenges along the way.

Well done to those representatives; Alastair Bradley, Patrick Henschke, Abby Douglas, Jessie Makings, Charlotte Irvine and Kayla Squiers.

Year 6/7: We have been entertained by everyone’s PowerPoint on their fantasy flight investigation and what I have learned is that everyone has very expensive taste. They have chosen very expensive accommodation. We have been trying to finish Charlotte’s Web so we can watch the movie as part of our end of year class party. This year has been full of fun and learning. Thank you for your support.

Indonesian: This week the older students are presenting their inquiry research to small groups for peer assessment. I can’t wait to hear all they’ve discovered. The Receptions are trying Indonesian rambutan fruit!

Gardening: Broad beans were popped and peeled then put into mini frittatas along with herbs and spinach from our garden. We have been learning the steps to plant seedlings, seeds and larger plants, making sure we have turned over the soil and have dug a hole that fits the size of the plants we are setting in place in the veggie patch. Science: This fortnight we have been finishing off learning about the planets in the solar system and we have been looking at our planet, Earth. We have been looking at the current problems – eg environmental and we are going to discuss some simple solutions to fix these. We have been looking at the rocks and minerals on Earth and have made some sugar crystals. The Receptions are finishing decorating the planets in the solar system and the year 6/7s are finalising their inquiry about Earth or outer space. We have had a very busy year. I’m looking forward to the new year as I have many exciting Science topics to introduce to the children.

Lego League

Our Lego League team of Will H, Ben M, Patrick, Sam M, Sam J, James W, Sam W and Riley made the state finals. We ended up placing 18th out of 32 teams. The top 8 teams qualified for the nationals in Sydney. We all tried our hardest and even though we didn’t get to Sydney we are all winners in our books. If you are wondering what Lego League is, it is a 3 part competition that involves programming a robot to do missions on a Lego League board. There is also a research project theme and this year it was ‘Life in Space’ so we made a poster of a ‘Mars Bubble’ which enabled you to grow food on Mars. The last part was a poster that kept the team in good spirits. This got marked by an air force pilot. We would like to thank Phil Michelsen who was our coach, for all his hard work getting the team registered and for volunteering his time. By Riley

District Cricket In week 6 Felix and I were selected in the District cricket team. On Monday we played Southern Fleurieu at Strathalbyn but unfortunately we lost. On Tuesday we were going to play Port but we got washed out as there was too much rain. On Wednesday we were going to play Lower South East but we got washed out again so we went bowling instead. On Thursday we played Mid South East in Balhannah but sadly we lost again. Overall it was a lot of fun although we would have liked to have played more cricket! By Trent

Knockout Cricket We finally did it, we won! On November 29 the 6/7 cricket team played Central Yorke Primary at Gawler in the SAPSASA knockout grand final. Off 25 overs we scored 5/101 and they scored 5/95. Our team was Felix, Trent, Sam W, Cooper, Will B, Ben M, Jamill, Noah, James W, Ben H, Jamie and Luke. Unfortunately James broke his arm and was unable to play but Ben H could fill in. We all batted, bowled and fielded very well. The top scorers were Felix (27) and Luke (22 not out). The best bowling figures were Noah 2/3 off 1 over and Cooper 2/11 off 4 overs.

Thank you to everyone who supported us along the way including Barry Gadomski for coaching us and the scorers and drivers. By Felix

District Tennis

In week 6 I played number 1in the Div 1 district SAPSASA tennis team. Our team consisted of 6 boys and 6 girls and we played at Peake Gardens at Marleston. We played 6 matches but sadly lost all of our games. On the up side I managed to win 3 singles and 3 doubles with my doubles partner Tate. I lost 3 singles and 3 doubles so it was a 50/50 win/loss rate. This event was really fun and a hard fight for me but overall it was a great experience. By Ben H

Premier’s Reading Challenge On Thursday 22 November Phyre and Ella attended the Premier’s Reading Challenge at the Adelaide Zoo on behalf of our school. Our school was one of 55 selected due to our high participation rate of students in the Challenge. We listened to author Phil Cummings speak and there was a scene from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory performed by some students from another school. Phyre and Ella then accepted a certificate and a book pack from the Premier Steven Marshall on behalf of the school. We were also lucky enough to get Mem Fox to sign one of our books. (See insert for photos)

OSHC Wow, end of the year already, where did November go? Well we spent our November with some fun experiences at OSHC like baking banana cake, playing footy & lots of crafts; not to mention some water fun on our Pupil Free Day We have also finalised our December & January Vacation Care programs which are out and about; with spaces filling up fast so book in ASAP to secure your child(ren)’s place. It’s a bittersweet transition into the holiday season, as this December Vacation Care is the last that our lovely Lane will be working as OSHC Director She has been a treasure to work with & all the staff and children here will be sad to see her go! We are all wishing Lane the best of luck with her future and studies; and we hope to still see her smiling face around the place. Enjoy your holidays everyone & we will see you all in the new year. OSHC team

Medication If your child has medication kept at school we will be sending it home on the last day of term. Could you please check the expiry date and update if necessary. Medication needs to be returned on the first day of school next year with at least 6 months remaining before the expiry date. At the beginning of next year to assist us in looking after medication we need medication and the health care plan in a named enclosed compact container – (eg small lunch box).

Results of Poll for the Charging of

Materials and Services Fees in 2019 The school community was polled seeking support of the Governing Council’s recommendation to set the school fees for 2019. The majority were in favour of this proposal and the fees are set at $335 for 2019.

A Note from Mary And so soon it seems, the year is coming to an end! I'd like to add my best wishes to the graduating students and their families, as well as to those who are leaving this school for other reasons. How are your plans for Christmas going? Our family have decided to dispense with some of our traditions this year, to try to reduce the number of "things" that change hands. Our hope is that we will be able to focus more on each other and less on what we are getting! I'll let you

know how it goes 😊

I do think it is worth looking at what we do, and wondering why occasionally - sometimes what we always do just adds to the stress of an already stressful time. If we look at the reasons behind our celebrations, we may discover that something needs to change. On the other hand, a good dose of tradition is good for cementing family relationships so don't just throw it all out! Best wishes to you all for a Merry Christmas and a safe, relaxing and happy holiday! I look forward to catching up with you all next year. Mary

Christmas Donations Box Don’t forget to pop an extra item in your trolley when you are shopping for our St Vincent de Paul collection box. There is a box in the foyer for donations of non-perishable food or Christmassy items suitable for a Christmas hamper, which St Vincent de Paul Society will collect on Friday 14 December.

Lost Property

Please have a look at the Lost Property rack at the end of the passage and collect any items that belong to your child.

There are many items of clothing that are not labelled so please label all of your child’s belongings including plastic lunch containers and drink bottles and check regularly to ensure that the labels are legible! This also applies to clothing worn at Vacation Care. Any items not collected by the end of term will be disposed of.
