Dear Members

There was a record turnout for October’s General Meeting to hear Dr Michael Leach’s fascinating and very

entertaining talk on the tricks of the trade in wildlife photography. A great afternoon was had by all – see

photos below.

The speaker at November’s meeting (16th) will be Dr. Mike Haynes. Full details on next page.

November is a “BRING A FRIEND FOR FREE” month when no charge will be made for non- members

who want to come along and see for themselves the benefits of belonging to our U3a.

As usual, there will be a subscription reduction to £10 for anyone who joins our U3a between December and the membership year end, March 30th 2018. And finally, look out in this newsletter for details of some of next year’s planned trips and outings and the new speaker programme. Best Wishes

Lynda, Chair, Daventry U3a committee

Side by Side volunteering

Could you help someone with dementia to keep doing the things they love?

You can volunteer on weekdays, evenings and weekends at various times, either in person or over the phone - so it's a flexible way to give your time and really make a huge difference to someone's life. We match you on your shared interests, so you can enjoy the activities together. Top activities people with dementia want to do with a volunteer include:

1. Walks to nature spots

2. Visiting places of interest such as museums and art galleries

3. Trips to garden centres 4. Spending time chatting with someone over a cup of tea 5. Company when shopping and attending appointments

For more information call 01832 736670 [email protected] or 0300 222 5706, or email us at [email protected] www.alzheimers.org.uk/info/20051/ways_to_volunteer/836/side_by_side_volunteering for success stories

AUTUMN SPEAKER PROGRAMME 2017

Thursday November 16th

“WINNING THE VOTE WAS IT WORTH IT?” DR MIKE HAYNES

On television, Brenda of Bristol said 'Not another one' when hearing that Mrs May had called a general election. The right to vote is something we should all value. Dr Mike Haynes shows how different groups through the ages have campaigned and struggled to get the vote.

FOR FURTHER DETAILS OF DAYS, TIMES AND CONTACTS FOR ALL OUR INTEREST GROUPS, PLEASE SEE THE GRID ON THE FINAL PAGE OF THIS NEWSLETTER OR THE GROUPS PAGE ON THE WEBSITE.

Coffee Mornings Please note that from November, the Wetherspoons coffee mornings will be on the fourth Thursday of the month - at 10.30 onwards -" just look out for the U3A sign on the table".

New Interest Groups Our proposed new Interest Groups are taking off well and thank you to all of you who have expressed interest. ,

This is the current position with them:

BakeXchange Our first meeting was a little lacking in numbers due to the desire for some to go wine tasting! Our meetings won’t clash in the future so come and get inspired by everyone else and get a spur to try something different. We will meet every month, each with our various bakes to share with a cup of tea and go home with a selection too. There will be no winners or losers. We will explore various themes, perhaps share specialist equipments, definitely ask questions, and very important, enjoy making friends. Next meeting Friday December 1st 2pm. further details from: [email protected]

Psychology/Philosophy Discussion Group We currently have two groups. Each meets monthly in the Methodist Church, usually on either the second Tuesday 10 – 12noon or the second Wednesday 2 – 4pm in the month. The topic for discussion at the next meeting is: “What makes us happy?” Please email Lynda if you would like to join, at [email protected] ScreenChat Lunch This group meets on the 2nd Thursday in the month at 1.00pm at the Middlemore Farm pub, Hidcote Way, Middlemore, Daventry, NN11 8AE. Please get in touch with Liz if you would like to come along and share in the talk about what you’ve seen on TV or film and have lunch too. Liz’s email is [email protected]

Wine Appreciation The initial meeting on Friday 3rd November was a great success. Good wines at surprisingly reasonable prices and plenty of tasty nibbles and good company too, thanks Lynn. Future meetings will be quarterly. Contact Lynn Jones on 01327 876040 or Email: [email protected] for further details/clarification

Victorian Women Writers: a Literary Group This group has evolved from the Jane Austen group which was formed last year to celebrate her anniversary. It was decided by the members that they would like to continue and move on to the Victorian era. The group is starting with books by Mrs Gaskell and meets on the first Friday in the month at the Abbey Centre in Daventry at 10.00am. The group coordinator is Angela Adams so please get in touch with her if you would like to join or have more information. Angela’s email is [email protected]

My Kind of Music: This will take place on the 3rd Tuesday, 10.00 in members’ houses details from: [email protected]

Latin and Writing life stories – plans are underway to get both these groups up and running. If you are interested in joining them please email Kathryn Holderness on : [email protected]

Cinema Visiting We are still in the process of getting members together to discuss how we manage this. We will need someone to coordinate it. If you would like to join please email Kathryn Holderness at [email protected]

NEWS FROM THE GROUPS

Page 4: Daventry & District U3A Newsletter · Guided Tour of the house for Wednesday, 14th February 2018. This coincides with the students' half-term so will give us a freer rein to visit

RAF HALTON

We had a very large response to this proposed visit. The maximum group size for a visit is 25, the minimum 15. Unfortunately hiring a coach for 25 increases the cost by £6 per head when compared with using DACT. Consequently I will contact the organiser and ask if we can arrange two separate visits, one in March, the other in the early summer. I will keep the people who have expressed an interest informed by mid January. J Edwards email: [email protected]

Stowe House

Following a very interesting talk on Stowe House, Buckinghamshire at the September meeting, I have booked a

Guided Tour of the house for Wednesday, 14th February 2018. This coincides with the students' half-term so will

give us a freer rein to visit a greater part of the house. Transport by DACT minibus is included + tea/coffee and

biscuits on arrival. The morning tour over, we then have the option of spending time at the National Trust part of the

site, where we can buy lunch and spend time in the Grounds. This would involve extra payment on the day for those

who are not NT members. We would also need to consider the weather conditions on the day, as it will be February.

Please feel free to tell me if you would prefer to come straight back after the morning tour and we will take a

consensus. Please print off the booking form below or fill one in at the November meeting. There is already a

good show of interest in this trip so, if you're interested, get booked in! Only 15 places available!

Future Theatre Visits

I shall be making group bookings for two spectacular productions at Milton Keynes Theatre. They are

RSC's production of 'Matilda' in June and 'War Horse' for September next year.Yes, it's a long way ahead

but group booking has been open for some time so, if we want to take advantage of the group discounts, we must get

in early. I shall have dates and prices for next newsletter then you can put the dates in your new diaries!

Our November 2017 trips are both to Birmingham – to Birmingham Hippodrome to see the Carole King Musical and

a separate trip to the National Trust Back-to-Backs and Christmas Market. We hope to bring you reviews of these in

the n ext newsletter.
