KEYNOTE ADDRESSENVISIONING THE ROLE OF DRAMA THERAPY IN

TRAUMA TREATMENTDavid Read Johnson, PhD, RDT/BCT

The concept of psychological trauma and its treatment have been rapidly developing and transforming over the past 50 years. The effects of trauma are deep and wide, in individuals and throughout society. What role can and will drama therapy have in the conversation about, and the practical applications of, the treatment of trauma? What is the state of trauma work in the field currently? Where do we need to go? What is our unique contribution, in comparison to the related fields in the creative arts therapies and body therapies? How can we better prepare the drama therapists of tomorrow to meet this challenge?

I believe that the answers to these questions are intimately linked to an understanding of the evolution of the wider trauma field, currently engaged as it is in the relationship to neuroscience, into its next iteration, which in turn will be strongly affected by developments in our society and cultural transformations as a whole. We may need to simultaneously attend to the evolution of the surrounding environment while we continue to examine in more detail the nature of our unique artistic media: the dramatic imagination.

This dual action – oh so familiar to us! – inward and outward – is what we will be called upon to do – again.

David Read Johnson, Ph.D. was hired right out of college as a drama therapist at the Yale Psychiatric Institute in 1973, where he fell in love with drama therapy, being part of a collaborative team, working with psychiatric patients, and operating against impossible odds.

After receiving his doctorate in clinical psychology, he began work at the West Haven VA Medical Center. In 1987, he had the honor of becoming the first non-physician Unit Chief of a training site at the Yale Medical School and then became the Assistant Clinical Director of the entire 175 bed Psychiatry Department. In 1989, he was chosen to lead the new Specialized Inpatient PTSD Unit funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Meanwhile, after helping to found the National Association for Drama Therapy, he served as the Chairperson of the National Coalition of Arts Therapy Associations through its culminating Joint National Conference in Washington, D.C. in 1990. He also served six years as Editor-in-Chief of the Arts in Psychotherapy Journal and is the author of numerous chapters, articles and books.

In 1997, Dr. Johnson and his colleague Hadar Lubin, MD left the VA and formed the Post Traumatic Stress Center in New Haven, CT.

He is the creator of Developmental Transformations (DvT), a drama therapy practice based in improvisational play that helps people adapt to the instabilities in life and the constantly changing nature of experience, which is ironic, because David has never left New Haven, nor drama therapy, nor being part of a collaborative team, nor working with distressed clients, nor operating against impossible odds.

He is most proud of being the father to two wonderful children, and the mentor to many amazing and talented drama therapists.

Therapeutic Verbatim Theater – Creating a Therapeutic Performance in 4-8 Hours (F10b – Therapeutic Verbatim Theater)Tamar Lubitsh, MA, RDT, LPCTherapeutic Verbatim Theater is a way to bring an issue from the collective unconscious to group awareness. DAY 3: Sunday, November 4, 2012 (Continued)

Drama Therapy: BeginningsNisha Sajnani, PhD, RDT Nadya Trytan, MA, RDT/ BCTDrama Therapy is an active, experiential approach to facilitating individual and social change. This workshop will provide participants with an introduction to the history, theory, and practice of drama therapy in clinical and community settings. Participants will also gain experience with three major approaches in the field.

New Frontiers: Advanced PracticesRobert Landy, PhD, RDT/ BCT, LCAT Stephen Snow, PhD, RDT/BCT Renee Emunah, PhD, RDT/BCT David Read Johnson, PhD, RDT/BCTIf you are an experienced drama thera-pist, join us for New Frontiers: Advanced Practices – an incredible day exploring the work with masters in the field, each showcasing how their technique/theory has developed and where they expect it to go in the future: including workshops by drama therapy pioneers Robert Landy, David Read Johnson, Renee Emunah, and Stephen Snow! This advanced practice training day gives us a chance to dialogue with these great leaders in the field of drama therapy and explore where their work is headed in the future.

New Approaches in Role Theory and MethodRobert Landy, PhD, RDT/ BCT, LCATRecent innovations have come to light that have pushed both role theory and method into their next iteration. We will collectively investigate these emerging avenues and how they impact drama therapy from both a practitioner and client perspective. Workshop attendees will gain a greater understanding of forthcoming theoretical and practical applications.

A Dynamic Introduction to EthnodramatherapyStephen Snow, PhD, RDT/BCTEthnodramatherapy is the implementation of Mienczakowski’s Ethnodrama method, supported by various Drama Therapy inter-ventions. It is used to give voice to and to process issues with highly marginalized populations. Since 2005, Dr. Snow has

employed this integrative methodology in two projects with adults who have developmental disabilities and in another with adolescents in youth protection. The workshop will explore all aspects of this new methodology.

Beyond the Phases (in the Integrative Five Phase Model of Drama Therapy)Renee Emunah, PhD, RDT/BCTThis presentation will not focus on the five phases, but rather will explicate updated elements, principles, and therapeutic values at the core of Integrative Five Phase Model of Drama Therapy. The model was developed in the context of group work, but its application in individual drama therapy will also be discussed.

Revisioning Developmental TransformationsDavid Read Johnson, PhD, RDT/BCTThis workshop will present the major revisions in DvT theory and their implica-tions for clinical practice. Concepts such as the Source, the Playspace, Instability, and Deep Play have been re-defined. DvT principles are now independent of drama, so for example, a DvT art or dance therapy are now conceivable.
