LITURGY FOR PENTECOST AND SPIRITUAL RENEWAL

THE PRAISE OF GOD

Calvary Moravian Church

May 23, 2021

We welcome all members and guests on this Day of Pentecost. We are glad that you have joined our

congregation for worship this morning at Calvary!

You we praise with endless worship for your fruits and gifts unpriced.

Holy Spirit, ever working through the church's ministry;

Quick'ning, strength'ning, and absolving, setting captive sinners free;

Holy Spirit, ever binding age to age and soul to soul:

In communion never ending, you we worship and extol.

Holy Spirit of God, we praise and worship you as the one who gave birth to Christ's church. With the sound of mighty wind and flashing fire, you brought life to the church in Jerusalem.

You filled those frightened new believers with power, and they became Christ's witnesses, speaking boldly the word of truth.

You continue to transform believers--healing, reconciling, empowering. Lives are turned around. Emptiness is filled. Drifting hearts are given direction.

You vitalize your wavering church--lavishing gifts upon us, forging unity, giving new vision. You turn our eyes from the wistful memories of yesterday to the new things you are doing among us now.

We worship and extol you, our Teacher, Guide, and Comforter. You make Christ known to us and make us your holy temple. By your presence, the church in all its diversity is welded together in unity.

Sitting

Interceding Spirit, we do not know how to pray as we ought; but you understand our deepest needs and present them with love to the Father. Lead us now to repentance and confession.

SPIRIT OF THE LIVING GOD

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

3

Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me: Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Spirit of holiness, we confess that we are a sinful people. In thought, word, and deed, we quench the fire of your love and dissipate the power of your presence. You long to restore us to the image of God; but we let it tarnish as we nurse selfish attitudes. You nurture unity, but we sow discord. You come to make our bodies your temples, but we desecrate them. We dishonor your good intentions for us. Forgive us, merciful Spirit. Burn away our impurities, and forge us into renewed and useful instruments in your service. Amen.

There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

We believe God's promise in these last days: I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Upon both men and women in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall speak my message.

The Spirit of God dwells in us if we belong to Christ. The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.

When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, we receive power, and we become God's witnesses.

The fruit that the Spirit brings to the lives of those who follow Christ is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

The diverse and empowering gifts of the Spirit are given to each one for the common good. None of us is useless to God. None of us is sufficient by ourself. We serve through the body of Christ, and we depend on the people of Christ.

The Spirit's gifts are given to equip believers for the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God.

4

BEECHER For your gift of God the Spirit, Power to make our lives anew,

Pledge of life and hope of glory, Savior, we would worship you. Crowning gift of resurrection

Sent from your ascended throne, Fullness of the very God-head,

Come to make your life our own.

Father, grant your Holy Spirit In our hearts may rule today,

Grieved not, quenched not, but unhindered, Work in us his sovereign way. Fill us with your holy fullness,

God the Father, Spirit, Son; In us, through us, then forever, Shall your perfect will be done.

Standing

Come, heavenly Dove, and alight upon us. Anoint us to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim release, recovery, and freedom to those in need.

Empower us to work for God's kingdom in such a way that life becomes a Jubilee, for us and for all people.

Lift up the lonely, the neglected, the outcast. Comfort the grieving. Restore the lost. Be the advocate of the afflicted. Teach all your people. Remind us of Jesus, and lead us into all the truth.

Keep us on the edge of dynamic living, wrapped in the flames of new beginnings, and filled with power for personal renewal. Form us in the likeness of Christ, that we may glorify God's name.

Renew your church. Fill stagnant and empty lives with the breath of God. Overcome our apathy, and energize us with your engaging presence.

Give your church new vision, new hope, and a driving desire to claim the promise of new birth.

5

Spirit of power, work in all who confess the risen Christ to spread your message of hope, love, and salvation to every person and nation. Hasten the day when every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord!

AZMON Spirit of truth, and grace, and power, Blow through your church, we pray.

Transform us from this very hour In all we do and say.

Anoint us all to be good news To sad and weak and poor.

Make us the instruments you use To praise the Savior more.

Pour out your gifts, wrap us in flames Of energy and drive;

And make our goal, our guiding aim, That Jesus' church would thrive.

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing Arr. Susan Berry

Pastor: The Gospel of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

MOMENTS WITH THE CHILDREN I Am Jesus’ Little Lamb

WEIL ICH JESU SCHÄFLEIN BIN HYMN 723, V. 1

I am Jesus’ little lamb; ever glad at heart I am;

for my Shepherd gently guides me, knows my need and well provides me,

loves me ev’ry day the same, even calls me by my name.

COMMUNION MEDITATION

THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION FOR PENTECOST The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.  We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father , creator of heaven and earth. In the beginning your Spirit moved over the face of the waters. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. Your Spirit came upon prophets and teachers, anointing them to speak your Word. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

7

heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. At his baptism in the Jordan your Spirit descended upon him and declared him your beloved Son. With your Spirit upon him, he turned away the temptations of sin. Your Spirit anointed him to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to announce that the time had come when you would save your people. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection, you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. When the Lord Jesus ascended, he promised to be with us always, baptizing us with the Holy Spirit and with fire, as on the Day of Pentecost. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: "Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: "Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine.Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood and empowered by the gifts of

8

the Spirit. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever. Amen.

All stand.

Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you.

All partake together.

Silent Prayer

By your divine presence, By the holy sacraments, By all the merits of your life, suffering, death and resurrection, Bless and comfort us, gracious Lord and God.

Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Drink from this, all of you. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.

All partake together.

Silent Prayer

Christ, the Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; Grant unto us your peace. Amen.

Whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death, until he comes.

T. Covenant

We who here together are assembled, Joining hearts and hands in one,

Bind ourselves, with love that’s undissembled, Christ to love and serve alone.

O may our imperfect songs and praises

9

Be well pleasing unto you, Lord Jesus. Say “My peace I leave with you.”

Amen, amen, be it so.

The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious unto you; The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace; In the name of Jesus. Amen.

COVID-19 UPDATE On behalf of the Joint Board, we’d like to announce that in accordance with North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s Executive Order  issued on Friday, May 14,  Calvary Moravian will no longer require masks or social distancing for those who have  been vaccinated against COVID-19. We do encourage those who have not been vaccinated to continue the practices of social distancing and mask wearing until they are fully vaccinated.

As we have been dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic for over a year, we trust that each of you will exercise common sense and personal responsibility as we move forward during this time of transition to a new normal. It is vitally important that we respect the decisions of others without judgement  regarding their personal decisions about using face coverings and the exercise of social distancing. As we have stressed in past communications,  the teaching of our Lord calls us to respect the decisions of others, loving neighbor as we love ourselves.

Please understand that this announcement does not mean that all our ministries will immediately return to their pre-COVID state. The lifting of mask and social distancing  restrictions does not mean that we will be able to immediately begin having a full choir or band. Time is needed to assess our current situation and make informed decisions about our music programming  in consultation with congregational leaders and staff.

The lifting of the mask mandate does not mean that we will begin offering childcare or Sunday School for youth and children. It is the recommendation of the Christian Education Committee that we use the summer months to fully prepare for  programming  so that all the issues surrounding

13

leadership, space and the vaccination of children can be fully considered and assessed.

This is a time of great rejoicing and hope as we see light at the end of the COVID pandemic tunnel. As we move forward as a community of faith, we urge caution, respect, and understanding as we all deal with  changes in what have become our normal practices during the pandemic. We encourage everyone to make decisions that are best for them and their families, whether the decision is to return to church for in person worship or to continue to participate by livestream.

The congregation’s  prayerful support for the Joint Board and staff during the pandemic has been greatly appreciated. It has been our greatest desire to provide prayerful, informed and  proactive  leadership during this challenging time for our nation, community and congregation., The Joint Board covets your prayers as we continue to move forward together in the coming months.
