Introduction

In the Indian literary theory carry out a sustained analysis of how meaning is constituted in the language ,forms and devices. Beauty is assumed to consist in alamkaratva the craft or rethetaric of composion.

Riti :-

Riti means style , method.

Vamana’s kavyalanara sutra rises much above the poetic , and justly claim to be regarded as the first attempt at evolving a philosophy of literary aesthetic. The most of his successors he presented his finding in the form of sutras following the tradition of the darsana.

The famous dictum:

Kavya grahya malankaaraat ; Saundarya malankaarah, A kavay becomes agreeable on account of malankaarah and malankaarah means beauty. At the very outset vamana struck sharp distinction between malankaarah as beauty and malankaarah as a figure of speech, his views were at variance with those of this predecessors.

vamana introduced the idea two kind of beauty- the natural and the artificial beauty caused by the alankaras , vamana denoted natural beauty as sobha and its heightened form as Saundarya.

Sobha ,kanti ,deepti , madhurya ,sukumarata etc.

The two bodies of the kavya vamana conceived of two Riti:

(1)Sabda riti(2)Artha riti

They are reflection of the vital principal the soul of the kavya.

The concept Riti is vamanas greatest contribution to literary theory. He coined the term Riti to denote the soul of a kavya.Riti to its apparent synonym Gati is significant. Gati indicates a movement which can be perceived analyzed and explained Riti on the contrary defies. In Riti the parts are not discernible they are lost in the whole which in unity. This form is beauty or sobha for the lovability of the kavya.

It may be noted her that the English of Riti is rhythm and not style as most critic belived Rhythm is derived from the Greek root Rheo equivalent to Riti etymologically and semantically.
