  • Do not worry about tomorrow…

How are you feeling today? Anxious, bored, hopeful, frustrated, worried, hungry? We might even ask how we are feeling in this moment, because our feelings can shift so quickly that we are laughing one moment and crying the next. As humans we crave certainty, and knowing how the world works and what to expect allows us a sense of comfort. But when we find ourselves in a collective time of uncertainty, it is so easy for fear and anxiety to take hold. Emotions are catching, just like yawns and fashion trends. If we surround ourselves with other anxious voices we are more likely to become anxious ourselves. We read in Matthew 6:31-34” Therefore do not worry, […] but strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Todays’ trouble is enough for today.”

It is so much easier said than done to set worry aside. What can we do create a non-anxious presence within ourselves so that we can spread calm to others? First, take a deep breath. Breathing deeply settles both our bodies and our spirits.

    Prayer Requests

Keep our medical workers, grocery stockers and delivery drivers in your prayers; those who are homebound and in care facilities: Jim Simmons, Linda Harmon, Gladys Mercer, Faye Mills, Verna Platner, Shirley Strivings and LaVon Ullrich. Darlene’s neighbor Debbie Bles, hospitalized for low blood pressure. Prayers for the families of those lost to COVID-19 in this period of mourning.

If you have prayer requests or other needs, please let the church know. You can call the church office or let your prayer chain contact know.

    Giving

Our offering plate is going to be lonely without Sunday Services, but never fear, you can still send your tithes and offerings to the Aldersgate church office:

    Aldersgate UMC. 3530 N. 32nd Street Phoenix, AZ 85018-5609

Next, limit exposure to worry-inducing news and people. Third, take care of your body by eating healthy foods and drinking plenty of water and moving as much as possible. And don’t forget to do things that you enjoy doing! Watch a comedy movie, read a favorite book, work on an art project. The more we are able to create a place of calm within ourselves, the more we will be able to find ways to work for a world of compassion and justice despite the uncertainty.

    Borderlands Produce Rescue

Borderlands Produce Rescue and Aldersgate UMC hosted our 3rd Saturday P.O.W.W.O.W event to help those disadvantaged by COVID-19 to have access to affordable fresh produce. The normal walk-up process was converted to a drive through with volunteers packing boxes that were put directly in participants’ vehicles. There was such a large turnout the carline was backed up to 32nd St. & Indian School and served over 450 families. Mark your calendar for the 3rd Saturday in May as we continue to help take pressure off local food banks and support the growing population of un- and under- employed people in our community.

Prayer by Rev. Barbara Glasson, UK

Loving God,If we are ill, strengthen us. If we are tired, fortify our spirits. If we are anxious, help us to consider the lillies of the field and the birds of the air.Help us not to stockpile treasures from supermarkets in the barns of our larders.Don't let fear cause us to overlook the needs of others more vulnerable than ourselves.Fix our eyes on your story and our hearts on your grace.

Help us always to hold fast to the good, See the good in others,And remember there is just one world, one hope,One everlasting love, with baskets of bread for everyone. In Jesus we make our prayer,In whom we trust these days and all days,Amen.
