About UNKLE

UNKLE is a collaboration of some of the most pivotal pioneers of British electronic music led by James Lavelle. 2017 marks 25 years of when they first started releasing music.

About James Lavelle

James Lavelle (b. 1974) is an electronic musician and founder of music collective UNKLE and the Mo’Wax record label. He has worked as a producer, recording artist, and has curated exhibitions at Somerset House and the ICA. In 2014 Lavelle curated the 21st edition of Meltdown on London’s South Bank, following in the footsteps of some of music’s biggest names, including David Bowie and Patti Smith.

Obsessed with the collision of music, fashion and art, James co-founded the celebrated ‘Daydreaming with…’ exhibition series in 2010. ‘Daydreaming with…. James Lavelle’ was first launched at London’s Haunch of Venison gallery and produced collaborations with celebrated artists like Jonathan Glazer, 3D, Jonas Burget, Doug Foster and Nathan Coley. ‘Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick’ at Somerset House in 2016 attracted over 30,000 visitors and brought together a total of 69 artists, filmlmmakers and musicians inspired by the work of Stanley Kubrick, including Sarah Lucas, Daft Punk, Marc Quinn, The Clash and Doug Aitken.

Press ReleaseThe exhibition also features the premiere of a new Virtual Reality installation captured from ‘Daydreaming With…Stanley Kubrick’, and includes a unique opportunity to ‘step inside’ Doug Foster’s mesmerising ‘Beyond the Infinite’ installation to experience art at it’s most immersive.

James Lavelle says: “UNKLE has always been a multi-sensory creative project, ranging from genre-defining music to cutting-edge visual art. It therefore feels incredibly fitting to celebrate UNKLE’s past, present and future in Soho, where it all began, with an immersive show at the much-loved Lazarides gallery. The exhibition is a collaboration between a number of very talented artists, presenting everything from paintings, videos, artefacts and film screenings; this is the definitive UNKLE experience. I look forward to welcoming visitors to daydream with us.”

For THE ROAD: SOHO, Lavelle has commissioned perfumer Azzi Glasser, to install the fragrance composition she has formulated, Build And Destroy, as an immersive scent scape that is encountered on entry to the gallery space.

The fragrance acts as the DNA print of the universe that Lavelle has created - UNKLE. Glasser’s personal composition uses the finest of ingredients thatencapsulates notes and accords to interpret Lavelle’s creative brain, his artistic style and his hidden sense. Notes of heritage and serenity on top using noble priceless ingredients of Frankincense, Myrrh and Pimento, are finely-tuned with Olibanumresin, Blond Woods and sensual Vetivert oils, polished with a long lasting addictive accord, of Musk entwined with Wood interactive molecules.

About Lazarides

Lazarides is one of the foremost galleries in contemporary art, directed by Steve Lazarides and representing over 40 artists from across the world.

Lazarides works with a motley mix of artists, each with their own story to tell, who refuse to be categorised and who share Steve’s grit and resolve for showmanship. From spray painting to taxidermy, electrical installations to wall pastings, Lazarides’ artists and their shows are renowned for their defiant staging and contemporary art world rule-breaking.

The gallery has represented a number of long-standing artists since their artistic in-fancies, including 3D, Jonathan Yeo, JR and Vhils, while equally nurturing young and undiscovered talent traced from Brazil, Israel, France, China, the USA and the UK.

Lazarides Rathbone in Fitzrovia is Lazarides’ flagship gallery and is set in a four storey Georgian townhouse. Recent shows have included JR: Crossing, 2015, Oliver Jeffers: Measuring Land and Sea, 2015, and Zevs: The Big Oil Splash, 2016. To mark its tenth anniversary in 2016, the gallery presented large-scale group show Still Here: A Decade of Lazarides, featuring work from over 30 artists including Banksy, Jonathan Yeo, JR, Nina Pandolfo and Miaz Brothers.

2016 saw the opening of the Banksy Print Gallery at Mondrian London on the South Bank. The new permanent art space presents a dedicated platform for secondary market editions and will provide access to the world of art collecting and to key pieces that gained Banksy notoriety and exposure.

Lazarides is widely recognised for its dramatic off site, off kilter events and theatrical group shows in major cities like New York, Los Angeles, and in London’s Old Vic Tunnels.
