For the most part, a sailboat navigates through its world of wind and water not leaving a single trace of it passage.

Nothing is consumed. Nothing is altered. The winds and the water are left in exactly the same condition for the next user.

Sailing is forever.

Commander’s Report Commander’s Report for October 2018 Beachcomber Our first regular meeting was a great outing to the Greek Taverna just off of Nova Rd in Ormond and just north of Granada. Rebecca’s grape leaves were excellent and my lamb shank was too. As a squadron, we’ve started the “new season” and have numerous squadron and district activities. Please see our schedule for we have some excellent events and outings coming up. We’ll have a Change of Watch this coming year, and we need to fill some bridge and executive committee positions. If you want to help, please let our XO Brian Crusan or Paul Martines know. We’re going to need a new bridge with immediate openings as Secretary and on the Executive Committee meeting. We need to recruit and train some new instructors, and some new Vessel Safety Check examiners. You can participate, or you can help recruit new members who may be interested in these activities. We’re well into Hurricane Season, please stay prepared, and be ready to implement your Hurricane Plan. We still have a month and a half. Again... think of our squadron, and of how you can help us grow and further your own participation. BTW, it’s time to get your merit marks into Paul Martines for all of the good things you’ve done last year. Remember to... PARTICIPATE…. HELP ORGANIZE AN ACTIVITY….. MAKE SUGGESTIONS!!!

Administration Officer Report

The month of October promises to be a very fun filled month for the DBSPS! There will be many activities for the squadron members to attend, whether it would be to the D23 conference in Cocoa Beach or the squadron boat outing to Hontoon Island! Additionally, this month we will be having our monthly meeting at Red Lobster in Daytona Beach on International Speedway Blvd. It has been quite awhile (my understanding), since we’ve conducted a social dinner meeting at this location. We look forward to seeing you at ALL of these events!

As for the month of September, the squadron commenced their monthly member dinner meetings. For the 25 plus in attendance at our meeting in September, we had our meeting at Greektown Taverna Restaurant on Ormand Beach. The venue was very nice, and the owner and staff of the Tavern was very accommodating. The food was excellent (from the numerous members surveyed), and the service was prompt and friendly. There are pictures from the dinner meeting are included in this month’s edition of the Beachcomber.

The boat outing to Silver Glenn was a lot of fun as well since we teamed up with the H.C.C. The members of the club were very nice and there was a lot of great conversations. The Springs are beautiful, if you ever get a chance to go there, please go! There are pictures of the Springs in this edition of the Beachcomber as well. Those of the squadron that attended had a great time. It was a very warm day, perfect for dipping your “tootsies” in the 72° clear water. It was refreshing to say the least! The DBSPS members spent the day conversing and playing cornhole, thanks to Jeff Wise. I must say that Jeff Wise and Paul Martines always do come prepared for the outings. They bring the necessary accoutrements to complete the day!

The November calendar has the squadron going to Bing’s Landing, EXCEPT, we will be doing this a week earlier than originally planned due to the venue already being reserved for the date that we had originally planned. Thanks to Paul Martines, we were able to procure the large pavilion for our outing. He has the “connections” needed to accomplish such magic, and as the Administration Officer, it has made my transition to this position a literal breeze! So, mark your calendar for November 10, 2018. There will be a few of the squadron members going up by boat, so if you’d like to ride along, there will be choices on how you can get there. If you have not had the BBQ there, you will LOVE IT! I won’t mention the desserts, because they are awesome as well, and it is worth the trip.

The month of December will find us at the Halifax River Yacht Club for the annual Christmas party, so again mark your calendar for the year’s finale ́on December 16, 2018. I will once again be providing seasonal music for the occasion.

The annual Daytona Beach Christmas Boat Parade will be on Saturday, December 1, 2018 from 1800-2100 hours. This is always a great parade of beautifully lit boats and certainly worth the time to just sit and enjoy the sights and sounds of the holidays, Florida Style! For our members in Palm Coast, their parade is on Saturday, December 15, 2018. Please attend and support our squadron members to the north. If it is anything like last years boat parade, we could see more than 40 boats!

As a friendly reminder, please make sure that you fill out your forms for Paul Martines to put in for your merit marks. Many squadron members do a lot of work for our close cadre of members, and your work should be recognized. Paul is asking that you have these forms submitted to him by no later than November 10, 2018, as THIS is the deadline for submission.

Have you lost an Anchor while fishing on one of Volusia County’s artificial reefs?

If so, The Volusia County Reef Research Dive Team has started a free community service that could help you recover your lost anchor. Place your telephone number on your anchor using a permanent marker or just paint it on the anchor.

If you lose an anchor note the Artificial Reef name and/or number along with the Longitude & Latitude. Contact us at Volusiareefs.org with the information. When we survey the location of the lost anchor, we will try to find it. If we find the anchor, we will call to let you know where you can pick it up.

There will be no cost to you for this service. We will simply recover the anchor if found and notify you where it can be retrieved.

Hontoon Island Boating Activity Saturday, October 13

ATTENTION ALL THOSE GOING TO HONTOON ISLAND ON SATURDAY OCTOBER 13!

We need to definitively know how many folks will be joining us on this terrific boat outing. The reason is that we will be providing the entrée' (burgers, hot dogs and chicken), but we will need folks to bring a side dish such as desserts or salad. Additionally we will need to

have beverages and condiments for our outing.

The phone committee will be activated to call members to determine if they would like to attend and what it is they can bring. You can call the phone committee member that contacts

you or you can call me with your intentions. My mobile number is 386-847-3103, if I do not answer leave me a message of your intentions and what you can bring with you.

Thanks, and we hope to see you on October 13th. We are planning to have the function at 11:30 AM at the reserved pavilion at Hontoon Island.

… see next page for Hontoon Island information...

MERIT MARKS

The following is an excerpt from the USPS Operations Manual.

A “merit mark” (MM) is awarded by the chief commander to a member for substantial personal effort in furthering the interest, programs and objectives of USPS, its districts and squadrons. It is a coveted award; it is by and large the only official recognition members receive for their efforts. Only one merit mark may be awarded in a year to a member, no matter how extensive the contribution. A certificate is issued, and a special insigne may be worn on USPS uniforms.

Recommendations for a merit mark are made by squadron, district, rear and vice commanders to the chief commander. Active, family and apprentice members may be recommended. Merit marks earned by family and apprentice members shall not count toward senior, life or emeritus status.

Five merit marks are required for Senior Member, 25 for Life Members are dues exempt for life. In a few short weeks our Commander will be forwarding his merit mark recommendations to National for the year 2018. As with all commanders, he will have that nagging fear that she might overlook a member’s worthy contribution. Since none of us are blessed with the “all seeing eye”, we ask that any member who has contributed time and effort to our squadron, please call, P/C PaulMartines, JN Ch/Merit Mark Comm. I have forms you can fill out to give me the information needed, this can be mailed, e-mail - [email protected] or Faxed 386- 252-5768- or you can get it in person at the dinner meeting. These need to be to me by, Nov. 10, 2018, so I can get them to National.

THANKS P/C Paul Martines, JN Merit Mark Chair
