CES Mission and VisionMissionCollierville Elementary School equips Little Dragons with the skills neces-sary to be successful in learning, leadership, and life.

VisionCollierville Elementary School will inspire every Little Dragon to be thriv-ing and confident students who become life learners and contributing citizens in their community.

BeliefsCollierville Elementary School under-stands the importance of the develop-

ment of the whole child.

Educators reflect upon teaching prac-tices for the purpose of professional growth and the continued enhance-ment of quality instruction as well as engage in on-going professional development and work collaboratively to share the knowledge we acquire.

All relationships matter and are essen-tial to learning.

Every learner is different. As educators we meet each child where they are and allow them to be active participants in their learning.

Each of us must do our part to create

a safe, respectful and positive environ-ment that encourages learning and risk-taking.

A commitment to student success is a shared responsibility among students, parents, educators, staff, and the com-munity.

Every child deserves to have someone that loves them.

When you set high expectations, all will rise to the challenge by working hard, taking risks, and persevering.

The Little Dragon Family,We are halfway there! It’s hard to believe the school year is almost halfway complete, but we’ve al-ready had so many great experiences with Back to School Night, Dragon Dash, and student per-formances at PTA meet-ings just to name a few. We hope everyone has a Happy Holiday and enjoys time with friends and fam-ily.

I want to encourage you as parents to keep investing in your children. My girls are only five years old, and daily I feel pulled in so many direc-tions that take away from me being the kind of dad I know I should be. Our parents here at CES truly are amazing! You all spend time with your kids at home, take them to community events, and pay for them to do a plethora of activities that you may or may not have had access to as a child. This holiday season just remember that what your child needs more than anything on a list is YOU! They need you to be present and to spend time with them doing things that they like to do. Remem-ber that the days are long, but the years are short. Make the most of each day!

As is typical for this time of year, we have some students that are deal-ing with colds, flu, and fever. If your child is sick, we ask that you please keep them home to help us keep our

school as germ free as pos-sible. Last year, the state of Tennessee Department of Education decided that any student who is out of school for ten percent of the school year for any reason (ex-cused or unexcused) would be classified as chronically absent. That means that any child that misses 17 days of school this year would fall under this classification. We still want you to keep your child home when they are sick, but we ask you make an

extra effort to make sure that when your child is healthy, they are here at school. If your child misses school, they are given their assignments but there is no way to make up the hours of teaching they have missed. For more information on chronic ab-senteeism, please go to https://www.tn.gov/education/student-support/chronic-absenteeism.html.

I am always a phone call or email away. I try to frequently post and share some of the great things going on at school on the CES Twitter ac-count. You can follow us at @CESLittleDragon. Every Dragon. Every Day.

PTA Objectives

Hello Little Dragon Parents & Students -

First and foremost I want to thank each and every person who contributed to our fall fundraiser. It amazes me every year to know that the funds raised at Dragon Dash ($43,332.81 this year) are 100% raised by the little drag-ons. ALL funds raised stay in the school and are used for PTA sponsored events and items needed throughout the school to make CES a better school. We hope that everyone enjoyed the Dragon Dash Dance Glow Party…..Laura Wiseman, PTA Fundraising Events Chairperson, threw together the best Glow Party we could in less than 24 hours after we got word that the weather was not favorable for running around the track outside. Thank You to everyone for being flexible as last minute changes were made. As we look into 2020 we have many exciting PTA events coming up. Community Reader Day held at the end of February is always a fun day for the students at CES. Should you know a leader in the community who would be willing to read to a class please put them in contact with Monique Walker, Special Events Chair ([email protected]). Moms, your day is coming up too - - Muffins with Mom will be held on March 26th & 27th. And don’t forget April 18th is Fair in the Lair, our Spring fundraiser. Circle that day on your calendars because you won’t want to miss out on all the auction items, fun fair games and yummy fair food. We have been working on some new auction ideas this year that you will want to bid on!!I hope you all have a wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year.

Developing Small Motor Skills and an Efficient Pencil Grip Are Important

Parts of Learning How to Write—and Enjoying the Process!

(This drawing shows typical progression of preschool development of pencil grasp. We were not able to locate its source.)

Dear Parents, Good handwriting matters, beginning with a good pencil grasp! If handwriting motions are not efficient, it interferes with the whole writing process.

As your child develops a better pencil grasp, the writing process becomes easier. It is normal for children to enter kindergarten with a wide range of fine-motor development. Some children start the year with an efficient pencil grasp, and others are developing one. This is because children’s finger muscles develop with time and experience. We are asking you to support your child in learning an efficient pencil grasp:

• Teach your child how to hold crayons, draw, and color within lines. • Then, provide many opportunities to fingerspell, use scissors, tweezers,

pencils, pens, and small building toys. • We want learning this important skill to be a positive experience!

Why is a good pencil grip so important? So we can write better and faster and so our finger muscles won’t get tired.

Parents as Partners allows us to give your child the life-long habit of efficient handwriting!

With appreciation, A Nellie Edge “Parents as Partners” letter 2016. Permission to use or adapt and make multiple copies with credits noted.
