INTRODUCTION

On 10th February 2020 the Chamber of Commerce of Venezia Rovigo organized the Smart Space Final Event Project in M9 Museum in Mestre - VE. The location of the event is closed linked to the topics of Smart Space project: the exhibition is almost completely “immaterial” and consists of videos, graphics, multimedia installations, and interactive & VR immersive experiences. Traditional place, as a museums, catch the knowledge on smart digitalization to develop a different way to create culture and making business. The Museum is the final outcome of digitalisation processes provided by SMEs, national and transnational.

1. PARTICIPANTS (Annex 1 attendance sheet and list of participants)

There were 47 participants: N. of SMEs 22, N. of Regional Public Authorities: 2, N. of Business Support Organizations: 7, N. of Higher Education and Researches: 3, N. of Project Partners: 13 Participants from Alpine Space countries and outside the Veneto Region 8 (Bulgaria enclosed)

2. ACTIVITY STREAM

3. TOPICS DISCUSSED

The presentation of results then activated the discussion on the following topics:

How to use the ERDF founds to increase digitalization in the SMEs? The discussion revealed the importance for SMEs of carrying out a digital maturity analysis before requesting grants and identifying the most

suitable suppliers with the support of qualified business support organizations (or intermediaries). Access-to-finance conditions for the digitalisation of SMEs is an important issue but the propensity to digitalisation and digital maturity of SMEs is not only affected by financial factors but also by non-financial factors such as knowledge and ambition to digitalise. It emerges also the crucial role of digital innovation hubs as key enablers in the wider ecosystem in supporting the digitalisation of SMEs.

Which kind of services are suitable to support micro and small businesses, considering the lack of knowledge in terms of dedicated employees to implement digitalization? At this regard the AS digital innovation hub platform is representing the entry point to a powerful interregional network of innovation stakeholders, that will benefit from a set of tools and services conceived to support Policy Makers, Intermediaries and SMEs in undertaking the digitization path and increase the competitiveness of the Alpine Space area. The platform groups together powerful interregional network of innovation tools and stakeholders able to enhance the cooperation of the Alpine Space manufacturing innovation ecosystem and to strengthen and support SMEs in the Digital Innovation Processes in order to increase their competitiveness. Open innovation means transforming something that exists outside the company and that is perfectible, in the sense that it can be adapted to the needs of a particular organization.

The expert on digital strategies, Giulio Xhaet, presented the distinctive features of “digital natives” compared to “digital immigrants”, to explain the importance to recognize where and how each entrepreneur can work to implement knowledge and familiarity on digitalization among his employees. The main concept was: the innovation isn’t only technicality and specialization, it needs changing and non-univocal transversal skills and abilities. This requires an open mind, a sort of curiosity and freedom of "contamination" among different economic and scientific fields.

Through the expert Francesco De Marzi - Digital & Lean Workforce Manager for Europe for Electrolux, the discussion moved to Alpine Space manufactory system. The point of view of an internationally renowned company, which also works in the AS area, was an opportunity to show the backstage of complex digital transformation processes in the production and distribution chain. Once again, the interest of participants focused more on aspects related to human resources than

on technologies in the strict sense and on the different rate of growth of human skills compared to innovation. The former have a slower growth curve not only linked to the ability to understand how to use a new technology, but due to the psychological rigidities in the use of digital technologies.

The project activities, carried out during the pilot actions, involved:

- More than 40 business support organization - More than 20 local public authorities and 20 regional public authorities - N. 4 national public authorities - More than 400 SMEs

It was also presented the main outputs reached: 330 hours for training courses, 282 participants involved, 43 self-assessment (14 Italy, 12 Austria, 12 Germany, 5 France) for a total of 15% of trained intermediaries. Over 100 intermediary organizations’ employees/consultants involved in cross-actions fertilization, by mutual exchanges of ideas and scientific and technical methods. Smart Space Strategy

The Smart Space path has shown until now that there could be many potentialities for the digitization of the Alpine Space through the continuation of the collaboration of the project partners, especially considering an enlargement of their number.

The Alpine space area is inserted in a complex system of regional, national and European initiatives to improve industry digitization. Due to this variety of projects and strategies about digitization and Industry 4.0, it is important 1) to integrate and coordinate the existent efforts, especially the fragmented initiatives in Regions; 2) to solve the difficulties of a transnational approach; and 3) to strengthen a shared and sustainable model at the Alpine Space level.
