Dogfish Head6220 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VAhttp://www.dogfish.com/The Brewpub opened in June of 1995 in the resort beach community of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Dogfish Head was the first brewpub in Delaware and quickly became a household name. The plan was to bring original beer, original food, and original music to the area. With the popularity of the pub growing, it was quickly apparent that the 12–gallon brewery would not keep up with demand. They distribute nearly 20 styles of brews in 25 different states. With brewing, distributing, cooking, entertaining happening all in one building on the Avenue in Rehoboth, they eventually outgrew the brew house and moved the entire production brewery to Milton, Delaware. To keep things interesting and off-centered, they built a distillery in the upstairs of the Rehoboth Brewhouse so they could branch out to making vodka, rum and gin.

Amsterdam Falafel ($)

2425 18th St. NW Washington, DC 20009

www. falafels hop.com/ At the trim Amsterdam Falafel, the Middle Eastern snack of mashed chickpeas, shaped into balls and fried to a neat crunch, gets slipped into warm pita pockets and dressed up with a choice of nearly 20 toppings. Picture shredded beets, turmeric-tinged cabbage, green herb sauce and eggplant puree -- everything arranged in a colorful salad bar and yours for the garnishing.

Bamian ($)5634 Leesburg Pike  Falls Church, VA 22041www. bamian restaurant.com/ The area's largest Afghan restaurant, in Falls Church, is also one of its most attractive. Chandeliers help. So do the coveted alcove seats, set off by wood walls and etched glass yet still affording a view of the vast 200-seat dining room, where a small stage underscores the restaurant's ability to host weddings and other celebrations. The draw for this customer is the food, hearty and comforting, delivered by waiters who practically become friends by meal's end.

Bens Chili Bowl ($)1213 U Street, N.Whttp://www.benschilibowl.comOh the world famous Ben Chili bowl. If you’re from D.C you know of Bens Chili bowl; this small building packs a punch a character and has been recognized on television and by world famous celebrities. August 22, 1958 Bens Chili bowl was born, this was an exciting time for U Street, and was known as “black Broadway”. Its location around various clubs brought in entertainers like Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Martin Luther King Jr and Bill Cosby to name a few. Bens chili bowl has stood the test of time and has become a Washington D.C attraction. Just thinking about that red chili is making my mouth water. The food is great, the atmosphere and history is even better.

Birch and Barley ($$)

1337 14th St NW Washington, DC 20005

http://www.birchandbarley .com/

This Logan Circle restaurant pays as much attention to its beer list as to the food. Chef Kyle Bailey's menu, featuring refined flatbreads, pastas and a signature brat-burger, pairs well with his wife Tiffany MacIsaac's creative desserts and a 555-strong beer list curated by beer director Greg Engert.

Page 22: DC101 Lifestyle Guide

Blue Duck Tavern ($$) 24 & M Streets, Northwest, Washington, D.C.http://www.blueducktavern.com/The kitchen, located in the Park Hyatt Hotel, wows with Modern American riffs like a double-cut pork chop with huckleberry jam, an oven-roasted marrowbone with creamy insides, and rightly titled "champion" collard greens. The dining room is stylish, done up with Shaker furniture and quilts.

Central Michel Richards ($$$)

http://www.centralmichelrichard.com/

French powerhouse chef Michel Richard has set up camp Downtown with this semicasual bistro offering up Franco-American spin-offs like fried chicken, tomato-and-goat cheese torte, and a ginger-flecked Ahi tuna burger. Rows of hams hang in a glass case. Light fixtures are subtly stamped with the word "Central." A jazzy portrait of Richard (think Andy Warhol) stares down from one wall. The mood is playful and low-key; cocktails and champagne flow.

Estadio ($$$)estadio -dc.com/ Not to be missed from the open kitchen in back: tortilla Española, a round cake of potato and egg set off with concentric rings of aioli and kicky red pepper strips; and crisp halibut, centered on romesco sauce that’s strewn with chickpeas and sunflower seeds. Weighty chandeliers, a movable red-leather wall and a treasure-trove of (white and red) Rioja make Estadio the most alluring place to graze on Spanish savories.

Etete ($$)1942 9th Street NW, Washington, D.C.http://www.eteterestaurant.com/The best of the city's Ethiopian restaurants, Etete doesn't hold back on the spices. Savory pastries known as sambusas are filled with fiery lentils, and ginger brightens a stew of vegetables. The sharing of dishes and the mode of eating—rather than using utensils diners tear off pieces of injera, a spongy pancake-like bread to scoop up stews and sautées—make for exotic and adventurous dining at this style-conscious eatery.

Et Voila! ($$$)

5120 MacArthur Blvd NW  Washington, DC 20016

www. etvoiladc .com/

This Palisades restaurant seems to only get better with time. Belgian chef Claudio Pirollo sends out authentic renditions of his country's cuisine from mussels and fries to waffles and a pear tart served with Hoegaarden beer ice cream. The restaurant also recently launched a burger menu with a mussels burger

Fiola ($$)

601 Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington, DC 20004

www. fioladc .com/

Italian chef Fabio Trabocchi has returned to Washington with his latest effort, Fiola, and the restaurant has really hits its groove. Trabocchi brought back some of his old restaurant Maestro's most popular dishes, such as the lobster ravioli and a thin-layered lasagna, and there are plenty of new things to keep diners coming back for more.

Graffiato ($$$)

707 6th St NW, Washington DC 20001

graffiatodc .com/

Mike Isabella's much-anticipated debut displays the influences of the chef's Jersey-Italian upbringing as well as his time spent in the kitchen at Zaytinya. Beyond the handmade pastas and artisanal pizzas, Graffiato has a ham bar, prosecco on tap and, of course, that famous pepperoni sauce from his stint on Top Chef: All Stars.

Georgetown Cupcake ($$)3301 M St NW  Washington, DChttp://www.georgetowncupcake.com/ Sisters Katherine Kallinis Berman and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagnehow co-founded Georgetown Cupcake in 2008. Since then they have had a hit series on TLC, DC Cupcakes. They have also written two books titled The Cupcake Diaries and Sweet Celebrations. Following the death of their grandma, the duo abandoned their careers in fashion and capital venture to follow their passion for cupcakes. Let your sweet tooth take you to one of the two locations in MD—Georgetown or Bethesda.

Hank’s Oyster Bar- ($$) http://www.hanksdc.com/The watchword is simplicity at this popular and chic take on the shellfish shacks of New England. A half-dozen oyster varieties are available daily on the half shell, both from the West Coast and local Virginia waters, alongside another half-dozen daily fish specials. Don't be shy about asking for seconds on the complimentary baking chocolate presented along with your check—the kitchen doesn't serve sweets, but it doesn't need to.

Kushi Izakaya & Sushi ($$$)

465 K St NW Washington, DC 20001

http://www.eatkushi.com/

Restaurateurs Darren and Ari Norris introduced the Japanese izakaya to Washington last year, and it wasn't long before Kushi was the go-to spot in town for pork belly-skewers, stuffed quail and, of course, fresh sushi. Kushi has even garnered some national attention, making a list of semifinalists for the James Beard Foundation awards this year.

Mike’s American Grill ($$)6210 Backlick Rd, Springfield, VA 22150http://www.greatamericanrestaurants.com/mikes

Montmartre ($$)

327 7th St SE Washington, DC 20003

www. montmartre dc.com/

Eastern Market's Montmartre is both a classic French bistro and a quintessential neighborhood restaurant. Owned by the same creators of the also-popular Seventh Hill pizzeria, Montmartre channels Paris with a menu of favorites like snails in garlic butter, country pate, crepes, quiche and more.

Newton's Table ($$$)

4917 Elm St  Bethesda, MD 20814

www. newtonstable .com/

Newton's Table is one Bethesda restaurant that everyone seems to agree upon as a hit. Chef Dennis Friedman offers a really intriguing menu with Asian hints and other twists here and there — such as duck confit nachos, Kobe wontons and a lobster tempura surf and turf dish.

Palena ($$$$)

http://www.palenarestaurant.com/

Chef Frank Ruta and pastry chef Ann Amernick met while working in the White House kitchens. At their contemporary American restaurant the French- and Italian-influenced menu changes seasonally. Among the can't-miss presentations are chestnut ravioli with shiitake mushrooms, raw diver scallops with creme fraiche, and roasted venison with quince. Comforting desserts such as a tangy German apple cake or a chocolate torte are a perfect match for the earthy cooking. Four- or six-course tasting menus are available.

Page 24: DC101 Lifestyle Guide

Sweetgreen- ($)

www. sweetgrass grill.com/

A closet-sized niche that sells freshly made salads and tart frozen yogurt. The guacamole salad, which brilliantly deposits every flavor of the Mexican dip onto mixed greens, remains a classic. But everything else about this franchise is breaking new ground.

Timpano (Italian Chophouse) ($$) 12021 Rockville Pike http://timpanochophouse.net On the website the restaurant is described perfectly “Rare steak. Fresh Made Pasta. Tall Martini’s. Swanky Scenery”. When I get the urge to go to a good restaurant this is the kind of place to go, a true gourmet Italian steakhouse. The lunch and dinner menus look unreal, and if the food taste as good as the descriptions look and sound then the restaurant is priced fairly. It is not the cheapest meal, but also nothing over the top. Some items that struck my attention were the fresh pasta dishes, hearty selection of aged chops and I need the crispy housemade mozzarella in my life. Not only is the menu selection excellent the restaurant offers a swanky bar and lounge that hosts live music.

Rasika ($$$)

633 D St NW Washington, DC 20004

www. rasika restaurant.com/

Rasika is not just one of the most popular Indian restaurants in DC — it's also, quite plainly, one of the most popular restaurants in DC, period. Chef Vikram Sunderam (formerly of London's Bombay Brasserie) mans the kitchen at the Penn Quarter restaurant, where he takes a modern look at traditional Indian fare with favorites like the crispy palak chaat, flavorful curries and more.

Ray's The Steaks ($$)

2300 Wilson Blvd Arlington, VA 22201

http://www. raysthesteaks .com/

Michael Landrum's ever-expanding empire includes the popular (and presidentially endorsed) Ray's Hell Burger. But it all started with Ray's: The Steaks in Arlington, which offered high-quality beef in a no-frills environment and at an affordable price point — which set it apart from all the steakhouses that once characterized Washington's dining scene.

Zaytinya- ($$)

http://www.zaytinya.com/

This sophisticated urban dining room with soaring ceilings is a local favorite for meeting friends or dining with a group. Zaytinya, which means "olive oil" in Turkish, devotes practically its entire menu to Turkish, Greek, and Lebanese small plates, known as meze. To get the full experience, make a meal of three or four of these, such as the popular braised lamb shank with eggplant puree, or the crispy potatoes drizzled in finger-licking yogurt. So many options make this a great choice for vegetarians and meat lovers alike.
