Overview of programmesDespite its relatively short history Dulwich College Shanghai has already established a reputation for excellence in music education. We are fortunate enough to have some of Shanghai’s finest practitioners on staff. Our teachers are performers in their own right and know what is required to achieve excellence in music. We offer individual instrumental tuition on an extensive variety of instruments from standard orchestral instruments through to traditional Chinese instruments.

Our goal is to develop a high quality music curriculum and instrumental tuition programme that utilises cutting edge teaching practices and resources and provides students with a multitude of performance and formal qualification opportunities. We recognises the importance of nurturing well-rounded students. Music can play a vital role in the development of time management and organisation skills, increasing reasoning capacity and bringing about an improvement in memorisation skills.

This year, Instrumental Tuition Programme students will have the option of having lessons on a rotating basis from Monday to Friday 8:00 – 5:30 or at weekends as part of the Dulwich Weekend Music School. The weekend school is not exclusive to our students. The duration of the standard lesson is 30 minutes although we advise more advanced students to take a weekly 1-hour lesson. Our students participating in the mid week programme will be scheduled into a rotating roster to avoid missing too much of any one subject. It is strongly advised that students missing classes should buddy up with another music student to help with catching up on any work missed.

Curriculum, Assessment and ReportingTo guide their instrumental lesson, students will work from either the ABRSM syllabus or the DCS syllabus. Each term the Music Department will provide parents with a detailed written report outlining their child’s progress throughout the term and provide suggestions for improvements and to make the most out of their musical experiences at the College.

Ensembles and Performance OpportunitiesIt takes a lot of hard work and discipline to learn an instrument. Many hours are spent practising new repertoire preparing for an upcoming examination or performance. We offer an extensive variety of ensembles and students will be made fully aware by their instrumental teachers of the benefits of joining one or more of them. One of the greatest pleasures that music offers is the experience of making music with other people and forming long lasting relationships with like-minded people and learning to work as part of a team. Performing with an ensemble is an opportunity to put all of that hard work into practice and display your new talents and confidence.

This year we will offer the following ensembles:

• Dulwich College Shanghai Orchestra (DCSO)

• Allegro Strings (Advanced string ensemble)

• Zheng He Orchestra (Intermediate Orchestra)

• Boehm Ensemble (Intermediate Wind Band)

• DCS Jazz (Advanced Jazz Ensemble)

• Chamber Choir (Advanced audition choir)

• Senior Choir

• Mei Lan Fang Choir

• Lao Zi Choir

• Mu Lan Choir

• Rock Bands

• Chinese Ensemble

These ensembles are only available to DCS students. There will be a major concert each term to showcase the wonderful work the students have been doing. Performance opportunities are also available for Instrumental Tuition Programme (ITP) students at various soirées. Students sitting ABRSM examinations will perform at an ABRSM Concert prior to sitting their examination. All of our students will have the opportunity to participate in the annual Founder’s Day Gala Concert in May.

The Dulwich Festival of Music, hosted by Dulwich College Beijing, will take place in October. This will be a showcase of student talent from the Dulwich Colleges throughout the region. Students from Years 7 to 13 will participate in intensive workshops guided by experienced practitioners to prepare for a Gala concert. In February 2013, Dulwich College Shanghai participated in the International Schools Choral Music Society performance at the Busan Cultural Centrel. Our students revelled in the opportunity of being part of this extraordinary show involving some 400 Choristers and orchestral musicians. We will again be part of the ISCMS Festival, this year in Beijing. For more information, visit http://www.iscms.net

During June and July a group of Dulwich students jetted off to Europe for the annual Vienna Tour. This year’s tour was again a huge success. Our students participated in workshops at the Vienna Boys Choir under the direction of Gerald Wirth, Musical Director of the Vienna Boys Choir. The tour was highlighted by performances with the Vienna Boys Choir at Palais Augarten and St Stephan’s Cathedral. Students who participate in any choir during the year will have the opportunity to take part in 2014. More information will follow in October.

ABRSM ExaminationsDulwich College Shanghai is an examination centre for ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) examinations. Each student’s instrumental teacher is best placed to advise on suitability for taking an examination. Ms. Rodica Hategan, Head of DUCKS MusicEarly Years Music TeacherYear 1 and 2 Music TeacherDriven by the desire to teach young people to learn to see the beauty in themselves and in the world around them, Rodica Hategan pursued a career in education. Teaching is a way for her to share her talents and creativity while introducing her students to music. Rodica comes from Romania where she was working as both a music teacher and as a professional musician.

She started studying cello and piano at a young age, but over the years has developed guitar and percussions skills.

Before graduation she played as a cellist in the Music Academy Orchestra, was a part of the Antifonia Choir, performed many concerts in Austria, Germany and France and recorded four CDs as a choir member. In 2000 she graduated from “Gh. Dima” Music Academy, Cluj Napoca, Romania, receiving a Bachelor of Musical Pedagogy and Cello.

After graduation she moved from Cluj Napoca to Bucharest, where she began teaching elementary and middle school music in 2001. Having joined Dulwich College Shanghai in 2011, “Ms. Rodi” continues to engage her students with interesting and challenging lessons on a daily basis. She strives to create a safe comfortable environment in which students respect and value one another, while learning through hands on experience.

“Teaching music to young people and witnessing the growth in my students is fulfilling for me. I have learned that watching a student achieve success in something that they were sure they would never be able to do is very inspiring. I have learned that if students know their teacher really believes that they can do something, they can do it. I have learned that no matter how young or small someone seems or feels they really do have something big to contribute and an important and valuable role to play.”
