A Case Study:The Lucite Model
Introduction
• Brief overview of the Lucite package and its process of development
• Screen shots of existing product• Costing
The E Learning Advantage: the View from Lucite • Lucite International (LI) is a global leader in the design, development and manufacture of
acrylic-based products.• Its recent investment in a Competence Project to enhance the skills of it’s Production
Technicians has contributed to the following results:• An increase in production of over 14%• An 82% decrease in High Potential Incidents• An objective way to demonstrate competence• Consistent, high quality work practices across the site• Established pathways for new Production Technicians to achieve competence• An individually tailored Learning Plan for every Production Technician• Production Technicians with externally recognized qualifications (NVQ3)• Internal Assessors with A1 Qualifications
The E Learning Advantage: the View from Lucite • The implementation of the Competence Project created in partnership with
Dynamic Distance Learning Ltd, has proved a steep learning curve and thrown up some interesting challenges at times. It has taken a number of years of energy and attention in order to evolve and embed it successfully. It consists of:
• 1. Computer Based Training (CBT) – bespoke learning packages• 2. Initial Assessment – each Production Technician was challenged to take an
indicative assessment as a form of ‘gap analysis’. This consisted of both theoretical and practical based assessments which were authored and assessed by internal LI experts
• 3. Workbook – authored by a LI internal expert and designed to be completed using information readily available from regular information sources
• 4. Final Assessment – a comprehensive (4 hour) assessment authored and carried out by relevant LI experts each of whom were appropriately trained as an Assessor.
The E Learning Advantage: the View from Lucite • 5. External Qualifications – every Production Technician has been afforded the
opportunity to gain their NVQ3 and every Assessor provided with the opportunity to gain their A1 Award
• Jessica McCole, Lucite’s learning & development manager, said: “The constant review and evaluation of the programme as it has progressed, has ensured that the quality of provision has improved incrementally to the point where 100 per cent of participants (evaluated) could see the benefits involved.”
• Philip Bailey, Site Director, said: “The Competence Project has made a significant and permanent contribution to the organization...
• “Employees on Cassel are more confident in their abilities and that’s starting to manifest itself in the generation of more ideas across the site which promises that the efficiencies we’ve seen so far will not be the last
Overview:
• Lucite commissioned us to build a bespoke e training toolkit that took into account the following:– It needed to be editable by Lucite Trainers– It needed to be an intranet rather than a internet solution– It had to be flexible and able to extended as new plant was built
• We project managed the whole programme in close partnership with Lucite trainers
• The project has lasted 3 years and won a National Training Award
The home page of the programme directs learners to the appropriate plant site
The package is divided up into 6 units:1. Introduction2. Instructions3. Trips and Alarms4. Controls5. Cause and Effect6. Self Assessments
All intros lead interactive 3D models of the plant
The diagrams provide links to actual elements of the plant and to relevant technical data
Diagrammatic links take the learner to a series of photographs and 360˚ panoramas of real-time activities

Each trainee is provided with a range of self assessment questions
