NOVEMBER 2015 DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL

Dear Parents, Students, and Friends of De La Salle,

As you know, this is the year for our school’s reaccreditation visit. We work for accreditation with both the Western Catholic Education Association and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Nine educators make up our accreditation visiting committee and we are happy to welcome them to our campus from November 1-4. Accreditation is a formal process by which a school seeks validation from outside, independent analysts regarding the school’s performance in planning for and carrying out its mission. In our case, our role of service as a Lasallian Catholic high school is evaluated in terms of achievements and goals for the future in five areas: Catholic Identity, School Organization, Teaching and Learning, Student Support, and Material Stewardship.

The report we have submitted is evidence-based and forward-looking. It is a report that gives us reason to be proud of our achievements and hopeful as to our capacity to meet the challenges of the future. The report embraces a key theme: the focus of all our planning and decision-making is on what we conclude will be in the best interest of our students for their growth as men of faith, integrity, and scholarship. The results of surveys of students, parents, educators, and staff have informed our work. Meetings of the Parent Association have devoted some time to becoming familiar with the report. If you have not been able to participate in the preparatory work leading up to our accreditation visit, you will still have an opportunity to learn more about our work over the next few months as the school works to implement various initiatives that are the fruits of our planning, analysis, and decision-making. The precise plan for implementation will be done in light of the recommendations developed by the accreditation visiting committee. Please know that your input will be sought in an ongoing way as we continue to request your participation annually in surveys as was done to prepare for the reaccreditation project.

I want to thank all who have had a role in creating our accreditation report. Parents, students, alumni, trustees, faculty, staff, and administration have contributed in various ways to our work. In particular, I would like to recognize Dr. Elizabeth Berkes, Vice Principal for Faculty Development, who served as the accreditation coordinator and her data manager, Mrs. Lillian Dickson, Mathematics Teacher, who kept us all on target with smiles, commitment, and attention to detail.

May these days when we celebrate All Saints Day and All Souls Day remind us of the communion of faith we share in prayer with the living and the dead. May our great national feast of Thanksgiving give us many reasons to express gratitude to God for the blessings of our lives.

God Bless!

Dear Parents,

Each year we have the responsibility to provide you with our annual asbestos statement. This notice is being sent to all parents and guardians of students, as required by the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). In compliance with this EPA regulation, a complete asbestos survey of our facility was conducted in 1988-89 and an Asbestos Management Plan was produced.

Included in this document is a listing of all identified materials as well as detailed procedures for use when disturbing these materials. The Asbestos Management Plan also contains records of all previous response actions (activities which may or are intended to disturb asbestos-containing materials). All response activities are carried out following EPA, Cal/OSHA, and local Air Quality Control Board requirements. This document is on file at the school office and is available for review.

As required by the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), we are notifying you that a semi-annual surveillance of our facility was conducted on June 6, 2015 to determine if the condition of any asbestos-containing materials has changed. In addition, the facility is fully inspected every three years. Our last three-year inspection was conducted on February 14, 2013. The semi-annual surveillance revealed no newly identified suspect materials, and all other asbestos-containing materials remain unchanged.

Please feel free to contact the school office if you have any questions regarding this notification.

In the Spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle,

NOVEMBER 2015 DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL

The first quarter officially ended on October 9th. This is a reminder that while this is a midterm grade, students should work hard to either maintain or improve grades in every class so that – by the end of the semester (in December) – the grades are a solid reflection of hard work and academic success. If you have any questions about your son’s grades to date, please contact your son’s teacher(s) as needed, as well as his Counselor. If any student has a grade below “C” at this time, or is experiencing any difficulty in a class, I would urge both the student and his parents to seek additional support and help, by attending regular tutoring sessions with teachers as needed through our tutorial program. Please note that any semester “D” in a core academic area must be remediated in order to be eligible for a 4-year college.

Please note that this tutorial program continues in every subject area during 7th period, and most departments also offer assistance before school and at lunch, which is especially helpful for freshmen. The list of classrooms and teachers for the tutorials is posted in every classroom and is posted on our webpage. We have several teachers available to specifically assist with study skills, and our Special Needs Coordinator, Mr. Sean Bristol, works closely with students who have learning challenges. We have two study hall classes at 7th period, as well. Your son should be carefully following his assignments through his Schoology site on a daily basis. All assignments and expectations for the day are included in that site. It is our desire, through PowerSchool, to keep you informed as much as possible regarding your son’s continuing academic advancement. The Library is also open every day from 7:15am-5:00 pm for study time and computer usage on campus.

BrightBytes Parent Tech Survey- We need your

input! For the last year, we have been surveying various

stakeholders in our community regarding technology

and its use at De La Salle by partnering with

BrightBytes, an educational research organization, in

order to learn more about our students' schools and

home technology use for learning. For that reason, we

are reaching out to ask you to take part in the CASE

questionnaire. The CASE framework looks at success

indicators for technology use in four domains:

Classroom; Access; Skills; and Environment. Your

participation is essential in helping us form a more

complete picture of technology use for learning in your

TESTING AND RETREAT DAY UPDATE: On October 14, De La Salle held its annual Testing and Retreat Day.

• Freshmen attended an on-campus retreat while sophomores, juniors and seniors participated in various college-related activities sponsored by the Guidance Services Department.

• Sophomores were given a practice PLAN test, through Princeton Review, a preliminary version of the American College Test (ACT). The results will be shared with sophomores in January and will yield information regarding their academic strengths and weaknesses, as well as how their interests relate to various career options.

• Juniors were given the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT), a shorter version of the SAT used to help determine college eligibility. Results will be distributed in December, (if available, otherwise in January), after which juniors will be seen by the college counselor and begin the process of post high school planning.

• Both the practice PLAN and the PSAT were paid for by tuition. Every DLS junior and sophomore is automatically registered to take these tests. Sophomores and juniors were given an orientation and instructions regarding this date on September 23

COLLEGE NEWS FOR SENIORS

COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID NIGHT

When: Monday, December 14, at 7:00 p.m.

Where: Carondelet’s Garaventa Center

Who: Important for ALL senior parents, regardless of whether or not you think you qualify for financial aid.

What: Guest Speaker, Financial Aid Director from the University of San Francisco, will explain the financial aid process and the FAFSA, which is the basic financial aid form required by all colleges.

Why: The completed FAFSA should be submitted between January and March 1, 2016. The earlier the better! Online submission after January 1st at www.fafsa.gov is strongly recommended. The CSS Profile, a separate online form required by some private schools for financial aid in addition to the FAFSA, is available for completing now and should be filled out ASAP. This form can be found at www.cssprofile.org.

NOVEMBER 2015 DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION REQUESTS: Nov. 20th is the last day students may make initial re-quests for both teacher and counselor letters of recommendation. Students should refer to the “Applying’” section in their College Advisory Binder for specific guidelines (also available in Schoology).

UC AND CSU APPLICATIONS: Both UC and CSU applications are due Nov. 30.

For CSU: www.csumentor.edu For UC: www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply

If a student has difficulty with internet access, see one of the college counselors for help.

The UC system requires essays as part of the application; CSU’s do not. Letters of Recommendation are NOT required (or accepted) by CSU or UC (unless specifically requested via email from the UC).

OTHER APPLICATIONS: Deadlines vary and students should check each college’s website. Many early action/decision deadlines are Nov. 1 or Nov. 15. Check out www.commonapp.org for expediting applications to multiple member colleges. Consider applying early to colleges with “rolling admissions” policies.

EMAIL COMMUNICATION: Colleges use email as an official means of communicating with students. It is important that students provide accurate, up-to-date email addresses to colleges, that they check email regularly, and that they check their “spam” or “junk mail” folders in case messages end up there. If a student chang-es his email address, he must notify the colleges. In addition, many colleges provide an ID Number to the student when the application is received. The student is expected to use this number to access his application status on the college’s website and to respond to requests for additional information found there.

TEST SCORE REMINDER: Students must order official SAT and/or ACT scores to be sent directly from the College Board or ACT to all of the colleges to which they are applying, in addition to reporting the scores on the application itself. This can be done online. See the “Applying” section in the College Advisor Binder (also available in Schoology), for detailed instructions.

HOUSING: For many CSUs and some out-of-state public colleges with impacted housing, it is important to ap-ply for housing as soon as possible—even this fall, before a student knows whether he will attend or not. Some applications are free; some require a deposit, which may be refundable. Check the policies of individual colleges and make plans now to assure on-campus housing, which is strongly recommended for freshman year, at the least. Information is available on the college websites by following the links for housing. For private colleges and UCs, housing usually does not need to be reserved until admissions are finalized.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION: Check the Financial Aid section of each college’s website to learn about scholarship offerings. Students also need to check the scholarship list on a regular basis, which is updated monthly and included on Naviance and on the College Counseling page on the DLS website. Students may also access many scholarships via the internet on www.fastweb.com, www.scholarships.com and other sites.

COLLEGE VISITS AT DLS FOR JUNIORS & SENIORS: College representatives will continue to visit the De La Salle and Carondelet campuses through November and into December. Interested Juniors and Seniors may sign up electronically on Naviance to attend these sessions. For regional visits made by various colleges from across the country, check announcements on the bulletin board outside the College Center and the College Visit list on Naviance.

Workplace Giving Program. What a wonderful way to facilitate your giving to De La Salle! Check with your human resource or community relations office to see if your company has a Workplace Giving Program. In addition to helping facilitate your gift to De La Salle, many companies will also match your gift – which could potentially double or even triple your gift to De La Salle and benefit the students. Again, check with your human resource or community relations office to see if your company will match your gifts to De La Salle. Did you make your gift a couple months ago and forget to apply for a company match? Many companies give you until the end of the calendar year to apply for a company match. Check with your human resources or community rela-tions office. Questions about the Annual Fund and matching gifts? Please contact our Director of Development, Karla Wiese.

Help us STREAM to the Finish Line!

With the STREAM Innovation Center now available to the

students, this stunning educational environment now provides

us with the right kinds of spaces to fully support our science

Though the students are using the classrooms, the project is

not done. We have achieved 78% of the $20.5 million fund-

date, make an appointment prior to the start of the season so you will be ready to compete during your season of play. Appointments should not be made during class time. You will not need to fill out forms A-D as you did in previous years. The forms are now included in the online registration process. Freshman athletes have a physical on file in the Registrar’s Office and do not need to have another to play a sport unless that physical expires at any time during participation, inclusive of tryouts and post season play. If a student does not have their physical completed by the first tryout date, they will not be allowed to participate (until the physical and all other paperwork is completed). Forms are available at www.dlshs.org. Completed forms should be taken to the training room. Please contact Mr. Bauman or Mr. Brown if you have any questions. BASKETBALL SEASON PASS: Each season the De La Salle Athletic Department offers season passes for regular season home games. Regular single game admission is as follows: $8 Adults and $5 seniors/children. These passes are good for one adult/child/senior admission to each home game at a discounted rate. Adult passes are $80 each ($13 savings). Senior/Children passes are $40 ($18 savings). They are available for purchase at the DLS Bookstore beginning in November and at the main gate during home games.

CAMPUS MINISTRY

Mrs. Mary Hassett

Associate Director of Campus Ministry

[email protected]

(925) 288-8110

It is with the spirit of gratitude and hope the approaching holiday season brings that we in Campus Ministry greet you! On November 24 we will be celebrating our Thanksgiving Advent Liturgy. Dress attire is required. The Junior Class Mass of Unity and Ring Ceremony will be held on Sunday, November 8 at 2:00pm at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Walnut Creek. All students and families are encouraged to attend whether they ordered a ring or not. Every student will receive a special gift as a sign of class unity. Students are to check in upon arrival, receive a name tag, and sit with their families. We are currently taking registrations for the Junior Retreat on January 21 - 22 at San Damiano Retreat Center. The Junior Retreat held in October was well received. The students gained clarity and confidence in their faith, values, and relationships with classmates – don’t miss out on this great opportunity! Registration is available online. Unfortunately, Kairos #97 Nov. 10 - 13 has been canceled due to an insignificant number of participants. It is very important that all those who were registered for Kairos #97 re-register for another date. Please note that the Kairos retreat is an amazing experience that Seniors should not miss. We urge all parents to encourage your sons to attend. Kairos gives Seniors the opportunity to put their high school experience in the perspective of how they have grown over the past four years in their relationship with God, others, and themselves. They connect with their fellow Spartan brothers in a way that is not possible in the classroom. It is one of the most defining moments for the majority of DLS graduates. We want all Seniors to seriously consider attending. There are still spaces available Kairos #100 (March 1-4) and Kairos #101 (April 12-15).

The Father-Son Retreat on Nov. 14 -15 at San Damiano Retreat Center is full. There are still openings for the Parent-Son retreat February 6-7, which is for either mom or dad and your son. It is also a first-come, first-served event. These retreats are open to students in all grade levels and their parents. Registration for all retreats is online at Campus Ministry webpage under the RETREATS tab: http://www.dlshs.org/campusministry/retreats/index.aspx. Once there, select the retreat link on the right panel for the retreat you want to attend. On November 4 Mr. Castello’s 4th period Religious Studies II class will participate in the Sophomore Immersion Program (SIP) serving the homeless in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco. Mr. Grantham’s 3rd period Religious Studies II will attend SIP on November 18.

ADVENT TOY DRIVE November 24 through December 17 Our annual Advent Toy Drive to help needy families and their children have a truly Merry Christmas will kick off at our Thanksgiving Advent Liturgy on Nov. 24. We ask all members of the DLS community to purchase at least one new toy for a child. DLS students are broken into age groups:

Freshmen 0 - 4 years Sophomores 5 - 7 years Juniors 8 - 10 years Seniors 11 - 13 years

The agencies who’ll receive these gifts ask that toys not promote any kind of violent behavior and be left un-wrapped. Mr. Eidson’s Freshman Religious Studies class and Lasallian Youth organize this wonderful event each Christmas season. The recipients of the toys in-clude: Bay Area Crisis Nursery, Monument Crisis Cen-ter, Holiday Helpers Warehouse in Martinez, and Saint Vincent de Paul Christmas Angels in Pittsburg.

* * * * *

This year’s Homecoming Theme was “Romecoming.” During Romecoming week, we launched the celebration with a lunchtime All-Star quad hockey game and refreshed with juice and grapes (very Roman-like). Thursday was the CHS Junior/Senior Power Puff Game where the Juniors pulled out a close, 2-point victory. Friday was our lunchtime rally in the gym, and Friday night was our domination of Del Oro with a “pink out” loud student section! The Romecoming Dance was Saturday night and a huge success. Many thanks to the Parent Association coat check volunteers! You were AWESOME!

School Holiday—Monday, November 9

Prayer Service for Students—Wednesday, November 11

(optional; 8:45am - Inner Court)

to donate. A reminder that students who are 16 years old can donate only with a signed parental consent form filled out and in hand, when they come in. More details

coming soon.
