Dear Staff and Faculty, As I indicated in the All Staff and All Faculty meetings earlier this week, your health and wellness is important to me! I will be working on a program in the spring semester to provide additional wellness options to you at work. You can always partake in at-work activities such as stretching, standing regularly and taking walks – as well as other Work Well programs that will be offered on campus. …. It is important that we ultimately take care of our own health and our families to be at our best to provide our best selves to our students. I hope that you have a wonderful holiday season and look forward to a bright and healthy New Year!

From the Dean:

“…As health and human service professionals committed to service for others, the faculty and staff benefit from reminders to take good care of our own health. ….An additional advantage of the CNPD Dean’s Walk program is the mindset and routine it helps creates in the college. The program has generated discussions of exercise and further progress for individuals in their weight management programs and fitness goals.” – Dean Gayle Roux

Quotes requested by Year 3

“Four years ago, I could barely walk around the

block. It was a factor of age, arthritis and

inactivity. I started slowly. I am still aging, but

became active, and the effects of arthritis have

almost completely diminished. I shared my story

at the Deans for Wellness picnic and encourage

all Aerospace employees to take care of their

heath whether it be walking through the

skyways, eating a healthier meal or using their

wellness benefits.” – Dean Smith

Feedback – Year 1

Positive: • Year 1 Yielded: 48% faculty vs. 45% staff

• Positive overall feedback from all

• Help from Ambassadors and Office Support

Questions to Ponder

1. What has worked well in terms of leadership in your institution?

2. Who might be a champion?

3. What could you do to make it easy on Deans?

4. What will be your key goals and metrics for success?

5. What resources do you have at your organization that might foster support for this type of initiative?

Feedback

Constructive:

• Capacity by departments

• Gatekeeping needed

• Change in Deans

• Better reward/thank you

ideas

33

What we did next… • Updates of each

event

• Re-connected on best practices

• Re-ignited the “Initiative”

• Connected with Public Affairs

Things We Tried Years 2-4

Recommend: • Re-connect with Deans and Office Administrative Leads 4x

a year – peer influence and reminders for busy people • Have a little money mostly for prizes has been helpful to

Deans • Marketing is key including logo, website and photography.

Video is great if possible. • Have baseline measurements • Quotes from deans • Used internal and external reports. See Sample of internal

report in handouts • A rotating option for Year 4 that went well - Zen in 10

Page 34: Deans for Wellness: An Innovative Approach to Campus-wide ......6/3/2016 1 Deans for Wellness: An Innovative Approach to Campus-wide Wellness Prepared for the American College Health

6/3/2016

34

Things We Tried Years 2-4

Don’t Recommend

• Too much Information is not good – concise and easy

• Decided against awards for most attendance as numbers were not as positive as last year.

Rotation of Zen in 10

Provided Zen in 10 (Relax and Renew® Yoga Instructor program at buildings close to employees in each College/School during Year 4.

8. What will be your next step when you return?

2016 Feedback Survey from Deans

I think it's been great, just need more events more often to get people into the habit of participating

Healthier college! I have seen many of the staff and faculty more aware of what they are eating and becoming active.

Made wellness a more visible goal

I do believe it at least gets the employees to think about wellness - whether they participate or not.

We do several health and wellness activities and I don't think it's clear to people what is a dean's wellness initiative and what isn't.

41

Advice from Deans for Other Institutions Baby steps... don't try to have too many activities at once.

Give permission from the very top--President, deans, chairs, etc.--for staff to leave their desks to participate

Use a variety of ideas

It's a lot of work!

Our Next Steps

• Our Strategic Plan in Work Well based on the HERO conference is to reach middle-management – department chairs, supervisors, directors

• Taking an idea from Oklahoma State University – Certified Healthy Department Program

• Currently piloting UND Healthy Department Program

Page 42: Deans for Wellness: An Innovative Approach to Campus-wide ......6/3/2016 1 Deans for Wellness: An Innovative Approach to Campus-wide Wellness Prepared for the American College Health

6/3/2016

42

What can YOU do?

• Personal modeling

• Personal messaging

• Start with one Dean, or one leader on campus

• Share our story

• Infuse wellness:

Add “Stretch/Stand” into faculty/staff meeting agenda as an item

Create a “Practice” to have a fruit or vegetable at all meetings

Do 5 minutes of wellness at current events/regular meetings

Tips from the Deans for Wellness

• If at all possible, get your President on board

• Identify Senior Leadership Champions in Student Affairs and Academic Affairs

• Create goals and metrics for success

• Develop template of activities – make as simple as possible

• Involve public relations – telling the story is key

• Identify Ambassadors who will carry wellness initiatives forward

• Have a clear plan to share and 1:1 meetings with Deans

• Provide short updates during the year with deans and their administrative professional

Remember Positive Peer Influence!
