Townswomen’s Guild article

The Kindness of Strangers7

Like all clubs and societies, we at SaltdeanTownswomen’s Guild, have not been able to meetnow for several weeks and it seems many more tocome. That does not mean we no longer think of eachother, call and care for any of our members needingsupport, that goes on every day.For some, who have no local family, rely on neighboursand friends to collect food and medication and if itwere not for this, the kindness of strangers, we wouldlive in a poorer world. What we can do, right now is take the calm, down-time, and make use of it. Lucky if you have a garden, asat this time of the year there is plenty to do, if it rainsthen spring cleaning would be in order and as ineveryday life we need to stay as fit as we can. On apersonal note, I am not even going for walks, otherthan ambling around my balcony, but I have two fitnessclasses on via the internet and do some yoga everyday….every little helps, so they say!I mentioned technology, and it’s great when you knowhow…! Some people, like us for instance, have hadseveral internet meetings using Zoom, but if this is likea foreign language to you, I really do understand. Again,it’s at this point that a more technically savvy personcould help, if you have the kit (computer/tablet/smart-phone) it may be only a phone call away and you willget to see as well as talk with loved ones. This is my favourite time of the year; spring is naturegoing full blast to grow, perfume, produce and nourishus in more ways than we can ever realise. The lightgives us energy, as well as showing up the dust, so bestnot to waste this little bit of extra time on our hands. The bluebells will be over by the time I get to walk inthe woods again, so enjoy the picture, it cheers andbrings joy to the heart. I am sure it won’t be long until we are all out andabout again, meeting up with colleagues, friends andfamily, but the world may be a little different. So, let usall remember the peace and tranquillity of this timewith gratitude. Our busy calendar of events and speakers at SaltdeanTG is on hold, but we will be ready to come back assoon as we can…in the meantime, if we cannot be thatkind stranger, at least be grateful that others can be….If you like to know more about the Townswomen’sGuild, please call one of the following telephonenumbers for more information.Written by Diane – on behalf of SaltdeanTownswomens Guild Audrey 01273 303596, Elaine 01273 302375 orDiane 01273 640895

13Local Appeal

Appeal For 3D PrintersTo Make PPELocal IT enthusiast Dick Ruck has had thewonderful idea of printing PPE, what he needsare a few 3D printers to allow him to get goingwith the project. If you have an unused 3D printer would you bewilling to lend it to him? He would be happy tocollect it, maintaining social distancing, install itand produce PPE for local care homes and/or theNHS. Once we are through this isolation period, orshould they want the printer back, he will happilyreturn it to them. Of course, any spare filamentthey have would be gratefully received - colourunimportant. Manuals would be useful, but notessential.

Key points:● Dick is happy to pick up and return any 3D

printer that people are willing to loan.● Will follow all social distancing guidelines.● Ensure the printer is clean before returning it.● Will return it upon demand if anyone needs it

before lock-down ends.● All donations of consumables (filament and

print beds) will be gratefully accepted.

We hope the the project is a success and willinclude an update in the magazine at a later date.

If you are able to help Dick please contact himvia the Deans Magazine [email protected]

Inspiration for this painting came while viewing adocumentary on the Amazon Rain Forest. I wasstruck by the tragic plight of the indigenous ani-mals, during its clearing, and their quest for surviv-al. A degree of ‘artistic licence’ has been applied,by showing both examples of indigenous and nonindigenous species, offering each other ‘support’.

27Ocean Views

Bruce from Ocean PC’s has been a long termadvertiser with The Deans Magazine, this monthwe welcome his Ocean Views for our special digitaledition…

Welcome to this Digital-Only-Collectors-Edition.Normally I can sit and fret all day coming up withan article for my regular fan base (which regularlynudges double figures). It feels very strangecomposing an article that only the proof readermight read. (I hope you enjoy this Sam….)As the Lockdown plods on I have been fascinatedhow so many businesses are still chugging along.Yesterday I spoke to a Doctor’s Surgery, POD,Terra Computers and an electric toilet wholesaler(don’t ask). Every one was working from home ona laptop, with their main switchboard seamlesslyforwarding the calls. A decade ago, the

technology to allow us to carry on working fromhome was rather flaky, now it runs amazinglywell.Working from home has peaked with Jamie Oliverfilming a daily cookery programme using twoGoPro fixed cameras and an iPhone. The rawfootage is emailed on to the production team intheir individual homes to have sound, graphics, music and archive footage added. Next day it istransmitted on Channel 4.On my occasional visits to the outside world I feelslightly uncomfortable about seeing the riskspeople in shops, bus drivers, delivery drivers runwith minimal protection so the rest of us can stayhome. I for one appreciate their contribution toour wellbeing.

THANK YOU.

Is There Anyone There?… Or am I talking to myself again?

29Friends of Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill Nature ReserveWell, what a difference a month makes !!!When we last spoke we were getting ready toleave the hill and delve into the woods tocontinue with the list of jobs on ourmaintenance list and then Lockdown hit.Whilst the volunteers were securely inside theircompounds adhering to the Governmentguidelines regards self-isolating the brave BHCCRangers were permitted to continue their workwith livestock. As per plan the sheep weregrazing on each section for a 14-day period, butwith the Rangers working with a skeleton staffthis plan had to be re-visited. Unlike in previousyears, when the Extension section (ex golf course)was grazed in 2 halves, it was decided to spreadthe sheep across the whole area which gave theRangers a small grace period before having tocome back to move them. We are very gratefulto all the regular walkers who took this in theirstride and refrained from criticising losing thispart of their walk for 4 weeks. Thank you.

I had to walk in the grass alongside the windmillthe other evening to avoid another walker comingtowards me on the path and imagine my surprisewhen I came across a small hedgehog. I’ve beenwalking on Beacon Hill with the dogs twice a dayfor years now and this is the first time I’ve comeacross one. He seemed very quiet and quiteunfazed by 3 dogs sniffing around him. The dogs

were promptly schooed away and Mr Hedgehogleft to his own devices. Apparently he’s a regularin one of the gardens that backs onto the NatureReserve and is partial to a slice of meat pie ! Thisdoes, however, help to emphasise how importantit is to keep to the paths on the Nature Reserve asthere are quite a few critters living in the longgrass.

With Scrub Bash 2020 well and truly over, oncewe are allowed out to resume our usual activities,we’ve got lots of other jobs to do includingplanting tree whips, maintaining the paths andsteps, ivy ringing and many more so please comealong and see what we’re all about. Hopefully theBeacon Hub will be open once the weatherwarms up so there will be coffee and cake to beeaten too.

We always look forward to having new membersso come along and join in the conservationconversation. Please join us in sturdy footwear, gardening gloves and, if you have them, bringsecateurs.

Local history - Article 96

Park RoadDevelopment

Building a residential road for a small development ahundred years ago does not seem very inspiring foreven the most ardent local historian. However, it is fas-cinating to see how everything was arranged locallycompared with today’s national, or even multi-nation-al, corporations. You will note that the bills were sentto the architect/surveyor organising the work MrOverton at 22 Ship Street, a street which had long beenhome to professional businesses such as doctors, lawyers, etc hence the many fine flint or cobbled buildings.

22 Ship Street, Brighton.

The materials were purchased then transport had to bearranged. The three barrows from Peerless in MiddleStreet were transported by Mr. Taylor from Rottingdeanwhom you have heard about previously.

Some purchases were small like the red road lamps fromBrowns in Station Street, Brighton, presumably for theMr Collins the night watchman mentioned on thetimesheets. Other small items like oil and pails camefrom Cruse’s Stores and Richardson’s Stores inRottingdean High Street.

Some purchases were more substantial, such as theironwork from Every’s Phoenix Foundry at Lewes andthe kerbstones from a Wakefield Colliery. Presumablythis was what the aptly named Mr Carter was cartingfrom Kemp Town Railway Station.

Cruse’s Stores receipt for 1 gallon of oil

2 pails bought from H. Richardson

Receipts above show purchases of drain covers, kerb stones and on thefinal bill transport of sand and cement.
