Dear Members and SupportersAs mere mortals on this earth and without the aid of technology and Galileo we would not know the moon existed, that is of course if the sun didn’t reflect light upon it for us to see it and make it’s shape change as the lunar cycle progresses. And so it was at Moseley last Saturday, in an eclipse, with pouring rain, sleet and mist the players emerged from the gloom and disappeared again as the cycle of the game progressed. Even Galileo would have had trouble charting this lot. You had to feel desperately sorry for the wingers who hardly made contact with the ball, poor old Kwaku probably just 3 seconds for the entire match. If the ref had called the game off at half time due to frost bite it would have been a reasonable decision but play resumed and an early try by Moseley condemned the blood & sand to another defeat in December.
Talking of reflective light we are happy to announce that the floodlights on the training pitch should be back in action in early January. Our resident “Mr Fix-it” Gordon Newbound has been in negotiation for a second hand set
of light arrays which should keep us going for another 5 plus years. Unfortunately not low energy lights (Mega Bucks) but they are all the overdraft would allow and vital to keep the 5 teams going that now train under them.
A quick note about the May Ball which is advertised further on in the programme. Since it was restarted a few years ago it has become one the best events in the “ball” calendar. Please do sign up as it’s great fun and all your friends and family are most welcome.
Finally we welcome Loughborough Students to Volac Park. It’s been their toughest year since entering National 1 and at the half way stage have much work to do. Likewise we would have preferred to have been in the top half of the table at this stage and need to get our mojo working. A must win for both teams. Hold on to your hats folks.

match reportvs jersey athletic
Cambridge 2’s remain top despite loss at Jersey Athletic
Jersey Athletic 19 Cambridge 2’s 15
Despite going down 19-15, Cambridge 2’s maintain top spot in Zoo Shield Division 1.
Atrocious conditions meant this game was likely to be a ‘slugging match’ and never a festival of running rugby.
Wind, rain and mud, as expected, led to handling errors for both sides.
The Jersey pack showed from their power from the start, which would prove to be the main difference between the two sides.
Cambridge however, made the initial breakthrough, with Matt Waring going under the posts. Robbie Povey converted to make it 0-7 to Cambridge.
Jersey were the next to score. Following powerful drives by Jersey forwards on the Cambridge try line, the Jersey 9 letting the ball out for their winger to score in the left corner. Conversion missed; 5-7 to Cambridge.
Soon after, Jersey’s 12 made a break through the centre. Looking certain to beat the Cambridge cover, Elliot Rayment’s intelligent and perfectly timed ‘tap’ tackle brought the ball carrier to ground.
Minutes later, Cambridge were awarded a penalty just inside the Jersey half. Having earlier decided to kick for corners, Cambridge this time elected to kick to posts. In very difficult conditions, Rob Povey kicked the 3 points, showing why he’s a quality ‘high percentage’ kicker.
Score at half time; 5-10 to Cambridge. The second half had Cambridge playing into
the wind and rain. Always likely to be an up hill battle.
From a line out, Jersey controlled the ball before releasing the right winger on the blind side to score their 2nd try. A successful conversion; score now 12-10 to Jersey.
From their dominant forward play, Jersey released another attack. This time however, with Oli Petrides intercepting the pass, he had the strength and speed to get round the Jersey cover to score in the right corner. Robbie Povey just missing the conversion
into a strong, gusting wind. Score; 12-15 to Cambridge.
Jersey came back strong as ever. With Cambridge defending courageously, time after time, a spill forward after turning the ball over led to a set of scrums to Jersey under the Cambridge posts.
The sheer power and control of the Jersey scrum, resulted in a penalty try and 7 points to Jersey. Score now 19-15 to Jersey.
From the kick off, Cambridge tried to fashion what could be the winning score. Strong dogged defence by Jersey and a couple of ‘knock ons’ by Cambridge, led to the ball being turned over. Jersey again electing to use their scrum platform.
After a couple of scrum resets, the referee blew for time.
Final score; Jersey 19, Cambridge 15.
Game Review: A dogged display by Cambridge 2’s, depleted
in numbers, due to late 1st team injuries.Jersey’s forwards display in particular, set
the platform to a deserved win for the home side.
The losing bonus point for Cambridge at least keeps us in top spot this week.
General View:After a great Christmas roast dinner (thanks
Jersey caterer’s!) and a few drinks, players headed out into St Helier. A good time had by all; “what goes on tour, stays on tour”!
A big thank you, Mark, Sean, Kate and all the players at Jersey Athletic. Good luck and see you later in the season.
Lastly, a very special big thanks to Banksy & Janet, Mike & Jackie Wilson, Steve Rayment, Sid Ibrahim and Ivan Bennett, for all your support over the weekend. It means a huge amount to us all. Thank you.
John Traynor
Ho ho home...
Home is where the heart is. And there’s been plenty of that so far this season but, as we hit the fixture turn around, coldly, there haven’t been enough points. It’s more observation than criticism - you’ve only got to look at last week’s results in National One to see that anybody really can beat anybody else. The quality has evened out to the extent that there is still no obvious champion and no obvious bottom three come the end of term. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the point.
With the Premiership all but ring-fenced, and the Championship almost as closed a shop, National One has become the battle ground where clubs fight to maintain the highest level of semi-pro status they can.
A big budget can get you out of this league - but it’s not a guarantee of further success. A big budget can be a burden, too, if expectations exceed achievement. All clubs can hope for without deep pockets is to try their best to hold their own.
That’s where most of us are in National One - and it’s both exciting and nerve-wracking. Someone is going to win this season by accident - similarly, two or even three clubs are going to be relegated with record points totals.
Our away form has been top three - our home results considerably less
so. I speak with Richie a lot and have a great deal of empathy for the job that’s being done here. If I had one rugby-related Christmas wish it would be that our patience and defence also provided a sackful of tries - and I’m pretty sure it’s not too far away. We’ve been better this season - results thus far haven’t necessarily shown that. But those who follow home and away know how good this side can be...
If you didn’t catch Tuesday Night Sport this week you should - rising GB Hockey star Tess Howard was in the studio and she’s a former Blood & Sand mini. Competitive, smart and better for the most part than most of the boys she changed sports at 12 years old. She was part of the same group as Fraser Dingwall - now starting and starring at Saints - and was always, always going to achieve highly. We strive to aspire to be the best we can be - and these two in particular endorse the continuing Blood & Sand ethos.
I hope you all enjoy today, keep listening to Tuesday Night Sport, and get exactly what you deserve for Christmas and the New Year. And I hope it’s a happy one for us all!

What does rugby do for their development? It is a question we are asked often as we
compete with other sports for the player’s commitment.
Here are 15 reasons why everyone should try and play rugby at some time in their life.
1. Improve physical healthForgive us for starting with the obvious, but rugby brings physical health benefits to anyone who takes to the field – and children are no different.2. Develop social skillsDeveloping social skills is another huge part of parenting, and one that again needs to be developed at a young age if the benefits are to be reaped in the future.3. They need to loseBecause it is character building, because it’s good practice for life, because kids will get over it and they need to know that.4. They need to winBecause it’s bonding, because it feels good, because they need to know that there are rewards for effort.5. Equal Opportunities Unlike just about any other team sport, rugby is about all players having the same opportunity to run with the ball, pass the ball, and play defence.6. Build self-esteem and confidenceRegularly engaging in sports can help subtly boost your child’s self-esteem. This happens as the child sets small goals on the field, such as perfecting a skill, and achieves them.
mini&youthsectionsponsored by
Why should my kids play rugby?
7. Learn valuable life-lessonsAll sports have lessons that can be taken from the field and applied to real life. But rugby has lessons that can’t be found in any other game – we’re not talking about the standard generics of “teamwork” and “playing hard.” We’re talking about the preparation for life that can only be found on the rugby pitch.8. Positive Role ModelsIt’s quite likely your kids will discover positive role models in coaches and older players9. Make lifelong friendsLast home game I hosted a table with 8 players and 2 coaches from my Colts team of 1988/89. Stories of old were told and a few beers were consumed. It was almost like we had played the week before!10. Breed academic successIt’s hard to believe that what your child does on the court can impact what they do in the classroom, but it does. Children who were involved with at least one sport were more likely to get better grades.11. Safety. No, really—safety!Rugby players don’t wear pads. And it’s a collision sport. But safety is a huge part of the sport and culture of rugby.12. They’ll experience the incredible feeling of being part of a teamCorporations spend thousands on team building exercises. Rugby players flourish in teams outside of sport which adds to their employment opportunities.13. They will respect others, regardless of their decisionsBefore respect for authority completely vanishes in the world, the last place it will be found is on the rugby field. When the referee makes a decision we disagree with, kids still call him “sir” and don’t talk back.14. It helps to reduce stressExercise and other physical activity produce endorphins—chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers—and also improve the ability to sleep, which in turn reduces stress.15. It could even go somewhere…
