Dear Parents and Carers, Each year members of our teaching community are recognised at the 2018 Principal’s Network Awards ceremony. We were very pleased to see people from Carlton Public School presented with awards for significant contributions to education in NSW. Miss Karen Flowers and Ms Jillian Murchie were presented with awards for exceptional teaching and leadership while Mr Vrachas was presented an award for his fantastic leadership across the network. We are very proud of the amazing teachers and leaders we have at our school and pleased to have the chance to celebrate their success. Well done everyone! Volunteer Parents and Carers- New guidelines As part of our responsibility to keep students safe at school, we have now been asked to ensure that all volunteers in our school obtain a volunteer Working With Children Check number. Volunteers apply for working children check through Service NSW. Visit this website for more details: https://www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/child-safe- organisations/working-with-children-check This approval is free for volunteers but can take up to 30 days so please apply as early as you can. If you have any questions please come to the school administration office or phone 9587 3717. Gold and Silver Award Procedures- Recently there has been some confusion with Gold and Silver award procedures. We know that it is very important to families that they can attend the assembly when their child receives these awards which is why it is published in the newsletter each week. Parents have been attending assemblies without checking that their child was included in the list of recipients and then they are disappointed. Teachers have been reminded of the process and will ask parents to refer to the newsletter for details about when the award will be presented. You will notice that the list of award winners included today is quite long. This is due to a shortage of medals and now that they have been received everyone who is owed a medal will receive one. If you feel you child has been overlooked for a Gold or Silver Award please email the school at [email protected] and we will investigate what has happened. The last date for Gold Awards to be presented is Monday 10 December, 2018 so please encourage your children to achieve this result! 4C’s training Continues with a Twilight meeting! Next week our teachers and support staff will be attending more 4C training at Mortdale Public School. We are excited to be part of a community of schools with Hurstvillle, Mortdale and Hurstville South where we benefit from so many learning opportunities together. We are looking at ways to implement the wheel with authentic activities that involve the attributes of good learners. Many of these experiences occur outside the classroom such as on the sporting field, learning a new skill such as dancing or playing an instrument. At home interpersonal skills such as showing empathy, building new ideas and expressing meaning can be demonstrated in so many ways. Consider using the language of the Disposition Wheel when your children don’t consider the feelings of others or during homework discussions. We can make fantastic gains if we work together to prepare our students for challenges they’ll face in the future.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Each year members of our teaching community are recognised at the 2018 Principal’s Network Awards ceremony.

Volunteer Parents and Carers- New guidelines

As part of our responsibility to keep students safe at school, we have now been

asked to ensure that all volunteers in our school obtain a volunteer Working

With Children Check number. Volunteers apply for working children check

through Service NSW. Visit this website for more details:

organisations/working-with-children-check

This approval is free for volunteers but can take up to 30 days so please apply as early as you can. If you have any questions please come to the school administration office or phone 9587 3717.

Gold and Silver Award Procedures-

Recently there has been some confusion with Gold and Silver award procedures.

We are excited to be part of a community of schools with Hurstvillle, Mortdale and Hurstville

South where we benefit from so many learning opportunities together. We are looking at ways to implement the wheel with authentic activities that involve the attributes of

good learners.

The Mini Fete, Band Blow In, Dragon Tag, The White Ribbon Walk … the list goes on!

Next week is a big week with Our Stage Three Teachers and students preparing for the Mini Fete on Thursday, 22 November. Everyone is welcome with wrist bands and extra Sausage sandwiches available to buy on the day.

Parents and friends are welcome to participate in this walk with us. Please meet at the school for departure at 9.30am with the walk with an approximate return time of 11am. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Stage 2 & 3 Children are participating in Dragon Tag at Evatt Park on Tuesday 20 November which is a friendly gala day amongst our local schools. It’s always a wonderful day so hopefully the weather will be good too!

Finally, Our Band members are involved in Band Blow In or an evening concert on the Thursday 21 November. Contact Bandemonium for details about these events.

We have such diverse talents in our school and it’s great to see so many experiences being offered. These activities do not happen without lots of organisation from our amazing teachers and office staff so many thanks go to all of them!

From the Arabic Language Classroom: During the first week of Term four, the Arabic teachers Mrs Awad and Mrs Sabra went to Mirath in Mind Gala Day to watch a group of Arabic students presenting Carlton P. School by performing "A National Festival". The dancers and the singer were absolutely beautiful. Many other schools were competing there . All performers were fantastic. Year 5 Arabic students participated in the Art competition with Mirath in Mind. All of them got High marks. Especially Ali S who got the third place. Congratulations to Ali and to all our students who performed. In week three, there was a" Lebanese Carnival" in Darling Harbour. Where many Lebanese families were enjoying the concert and the Lebanese dabkeh.

At Carlton P. School, we are teaching our students about Celebrations. Through the Arabic lessons I am using 4Cs: Collaboration, Communication, Critical and Creative Thinking. Our students are learning through activities, games, stories, songs, and videos. They discuss ideas, do research, use their knowledge to write sentences, summaries and books. Teaching and learning take place inside and outside the classroom. Students use their skills to do research, to find information about Arabic Artists and celebrations and to write summaries. They use Critical and Creative Thinking to form a collage and to do a tableau. They use Focus in the Bus-Stop Activity. Where each child says or read a word or a sentence in Arabic. Outside, students go outside to find hidden words related to their topic and read them to the teacher. For each correct word they get a point. Also they do a tableau to represent a family in different rooms in the house preparing for the Eid. Through all these activities we are preparing our students for the future. Mrs Awad

My Mirath in Mind experience by Serene

On Friday 19 October the Arabic dancers around New South Wales attended the Mirath in Mind competition for dancing and visual arts. There were many schools and ours was one of them. When we arrived at Mirath in Mind we got our tickets and waited to be seated. As we got our seats we were just in time for the speeches. After that they announced every schools name and told us to scream as loud as we can to see how enthusiastic we are. When the performances started we all started to get very nervous because we were up first. As we entered the stage we all had butterflies in our stomachs. When we started the dance the audience started clapping. It all made us ambitious. When we finished everyone congratulated us and told that our performance was amazing. We all rushed to our seats to watch the next acts. Once they started we were all very amazed because their dancers were so good Finally I would like say that I had an amazing time at Mirath in Mind Gala Day. Thank you to Mirath in Mind for inviting us to be part of your competition, it was a successful day.

Congratulations to Miss Elmowy and

5 Orange who have created artworks

for the Koori Art Expressions
