Dear Parents and Friends of SGS,

As part of our commitment to ongoing development we are running a

goals-based Professional Development programme, titled Scone

Grammar School’s Professional Learning Framework (PLF). This

programme gives a direction and structure for our staff to develop

their strengths and improve in areas that need extra support. It is also

a programme where staff share their expertise with each other. These

collaborative opportunities are valuable for the development of

learning in our school. Education is about growth and development

and as a school we need to look to improve what we do, and all parts

of the school need to be doing this. We ask students to strive for

improvement and their best, every day. What a journey we are on

together!

Please continue to keep Year 12 in your prayers as they conclude their Trials and enter the final

weeks of school.

Please encourage those families you know who are considering Kindergarten enrolment for 2016

to make contact with the office as we are well into the process of enrolment and orientation.

Places are still available in classes.

Staff members continue to raise their concern that many students are not eating breakfast before

coming to school. Please consider ways to support your children in eating something healthy prior

to school as it helps them to concentrate and do their best. The free fruit that has been made

available for the students has been a positive way forward and used often by students. This is a

good support for them but can’t replace a good breakfast.

Thank you for being a significant part of the learning journey for your child. Please continue to

share your concerns, joys or issues with us.

Primary News from Mr Feeney

Congratulations to our Primary Athletes on their outstanding efforts last week at the HRIS Div 1 Primary

Athletics Carnival. I was delighted to hear of their success in gaining 3rd Place overall, as well as hearing reports

of the high standard of their dress and sportsmanship. This is a wonderful balance that I’m sure makes us all very

proud. My thanks to Mr Holden, Mr Saunders and Mrs Patterson for their support and supervision of the team on

the day.

I cannot speak highly enough of the initiative and commitment given by Primary staff and students to last week’s

Walkathon. What an amazing result (as detailed in the Walkathon Report). Students will benefit enormously

from the reading resources, which will now be purchased as a result of this fund-raising effort. My special thanks

to Mrs Walsh and Year 3 for their involvement and leadership.

It was a privilege to assist in the presentation of Semester Two SRC Badges last week in Primary Chapel, and I do

wish these students well as they take on this important responsibility during the remainder of the year.

As you read the Newsletter this week, Years 2, 3 and 4 will be in the middle of their annual camps. Students in

Years 3 and 4 headed off on Wednesday morning for their respective three-day camps. Year 3 students are

staying at ‘Lake Mac’ and Year 4 students are at ‘Galston Gorge’ - both camp sites are run by Crusaders. These

camps incorporate Christian Discovery sessions as well as a range of outdoor adventure activities. ‘Lake Mac’ has a

particular focus on sailing, while ‘Galston Gorge’ includes a BMX activity in their programme. Year 2 students

headed off today, Thursday, for their two day trip to Sydney.

Please continue to pray for the students, teachers and camp leaders, as they conclude their camps and travel

home on Friday. These camps are such valuable experiences and provide so many different confidence building

opportunities. Thank you parents for your support for the students in preparation beforehand, and especially to

those parents who have attended and assisted as supervisors. We value your involvement greatly.

Primary Assembly will be on again this Friday, 14 August, hosted by Kindergarten. The Assembly will be in the

Primary Quad, commencing at 1:00pm. (Unfortunately, St Luke’s Hall is unavailable this week.)

Next week, Edward Arnott will be representing NSWCIS as part of the 2015 NSWCIS Primary Rugby team,

competing in the PSSA Primary Rugby Championships at Narrabeen. This is a wonderful achievement for Edward,

and I’m sure, a very special opportunity to enjoy. We wish him every success and look forward with great interest

to news of the team’s results.

Last week, Primary Staff spent time on Wednesday afternoon, undertaking a further professional development

session together, to strengthen our understanding of the new BOSTES History Syllabus, which is part of the new

Australian Curriculum. Kelly Borg, a Senior AIS Consultant in Primary Curriculum, led this session. The new

History Syllabus, which is structured around an inquiry learning model, will be implemented in 2016. For parents

Congratulations and best wishes to Caitlin Porter (Year 6 Gold), Clare Price (Year 6 Gold), Isabelle Burke

(Kindergarten Gold), and Annabelle Goodchild (Year 2 Gold), who are all celebrating their birthdays this week. I

trust that each of these students will enjoy the day and the opportunity to share this special occasion with their

family and friends.

I was reminded of this last week of the value and power of prayer. I was reminded of how my Grandparents

prayed for me every day. We need to pray daily for our children!

"For this reason also...we have not ceased to pray for you..." (Colossians 1:9a)

Here are some prayer suggestions:

Pray that they will increase in the knowledge of God. Most parents’ greatest hope for their children is

that they will be happy, but a fulfilled life comes from knowing Jesus. Without Him, there is a nagging

emptiness. Lots of people know about God, but knowing Jesus personally is different. Pray that they live a worthy life. Pray that their lives have an impact for good, and that they will be

people of trustworthy character. Pray that they may come to know God’s will and purpose for their life.

Pray that they are strengthened in God’s power. The world and evil influences will seek to pull our

children down. They need God’s power to be strong, resist temptation, and do the right thing.

Thank God for them. They are unique creations of God.

The Yellow Cottage Tales

We are half way through the term but we are not slowing down here at The

Yellow Cottage. On Friday we enjoyed watching the Scone Grammar School

children doing their walkathon right past the front of The Yellow Cottage. There

was lots of cheering and high fives.

Below are some important dates for your diaries.

Week 7 – 24 – 28 August. Book Week. We plan to take the children on

excursions to the Scone Library and to the Grammar School Book parade.

Week 9- 7- 11 September. Photo Week. Hot Shotz Photography will be here

everyday this week to take our preschool photos. On Wednesday, 9 September we are going to attend the

Scone Public School concert, “A Night at the Theatre.”

On Wednesday of this week, The Yellow Cottage is having “The Happy Tooth” visit us to speak about dental

health. This visit will help the children learn how to brush their teeth correctly and talk to them about visiting

the dentist. We encourage the children to wash their mouths at preschool with a big drink of water after they

eat to help with dental hygiene. We thank “The Happy Tooth” for coming to share these important lessons with

us at preschool.

In the next couple of weeks, a letter will be coming out to families with their allocation of days for next year at

The Yellow Cottage. Thank you for returning your enrolment information so efficiently.

Thank you for making such healthy choices for your children’s lunch boxes. We have included a Yellow Cottage

set of lunchbox traffic lights in the newsletter as a reminder of our recommendations for healthy eating at

preschool.

Curriculum Corner

Year 4 PD/H/PE

Over this term the students in Year 4 have shown a real interest in learning to jump rope so the teachers have

designed a Physical Education programme to teach students some basic skills. The skills that the students have

been learning are big rope, running in and movement in the rope and single rope skills such as cross over and

jumping with a friend. Each lesson the students are checking off the skills they have learnt. Please encourage your

child to show you what they have learnt.

To coincide with our skipping programme we have been discussing healthy living. We have thought about what

makes a healthy person and looked into the importance of healthy eating. Included in our programme we will be

looking in our lunch boxes to see what are the healthy options for everyday and what we should save for a treat.

Year 1 Gold

This Term, 1 Gold have been learning about and writing procedures. Today we wrote a procedure for making

Floating Flowers. After they were made we then watched them unfold on the water before our eyes.

Last week we did the same writing task for making and flying Paper Helicopters. We also had a flying competition.

2015 Australian History Competition On May 27, students in Years 8 and 10 sat the Australian History Competition. This competition attracted over

23,000 participants and there were many praiseworthy results amongst the students of Scone Grammar School.

The competition aims to foster students’ interest and understanding of History and, in 2015, it was based upon

the National Curriculum.

EnEx in the Primary School Each week, over 30 students participate in our enrichment and extension programme here at the Scone Grammar

School. Students who demonstrate an exceptional level of competence in various areas of study are nominated by their teachers to join the EnEx group.

Those who attend each week are involved in a series of critical and creative thinking activities that stretch their

minds to think outside the square. They are required to solve problems through planning and implementing

ideas. This term, EnEx was opened up to students in Years 3, 4 and 6 and already I have been impressed by the academic talent we have at our School.

Later in the year, 2 teams of students will be heading up to Armidale to compete in the Northern NSW daVinci

Decathlon. This will involve them competing against other NSW schools in various disciplines including

mathematics, engineering, code breaking, acting plus more. We wish our teams every success and look forward to hearing of their achievements and results.

Children’s Book Week 22 August – 28 August 2015

Children’s Book Week is rapidly approaching. The theme of Children’s Book Week is Books

Light Up Our World. We are holding a Book Character Parade on Friday, 28 August,

commencing at 11.30am in the Primary Quadrangle. We invite Primary and Infants

students to dress up as their favourite book character.

What character has illuminated your world? Re-read a description of your character, go through the dress up box, visit an

Op. Shop and create a costume that will dazzle us. Prizes will be awarded.

Scholastic Book Fair 20 – 28 August 2015

The Library will be holding a Scholastic Book Fair during Book Week where students

are given the opportunity of purchasing books and other items. Not only is a

Scholastic Book Fair a great way to support and encourage your child’s reading, it has

the added bonus of helping the Library to acquire much-needed resources. So please

come and visit us during Book Week. We will have a range of different titles for you to

purchase on display in the Library.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge closes for students on 21 August at 11.59pm. Please ensure you have entered

the books you have read by that date. If you are having difficulties or are unsure what to do please do not

hesitate to ask me for assistance.

Second Hand Uniforms If you own or are looking to buy any second hand items, being either uniform or textbooks, look no further!

There's a fantastic website, The Sustainable School Shop - www.sustainableschoolshop.com.au. It's incredibly

easy to use. Currently there are quite a few uniform items for sale on the website. You can talk or email the

owners directly. If you would like a tutorial, Pip Baker at the Clothing Cottage would be pleased to give you a

quick lesson!

Upper Hunter Primary Chess Gala Day

On Thursday, 6 August, ten Primary students travelled to Denman to compete in an Upper Hunter Chess Gala

Day. Many of the students were competing at their first tournament, learning new skills and improving in

their confidence throughout the day. All students tried hard and represented their School beautifully. Well

done to: Ryan Dowell, Nick Gallagher, Angus Davidson, Jarryd Miskle, Matthew Edwards, Georgina Pratley,

William Nugent, Eva Holden, Lizzie Young and Hannah King.

Equestrian News

Very successful results were achieved at the Merriwa Horse Sports Day on Monday 10 August and once again

we were awarded the Highest Point Score for Primary Schools. Full results and photos will be in the newsletter next week.

Important information re Willow Tree Horse Sports - all participants entered for the postponed March event have been contacted. Please let me know if you are unable to attend – full refunds will be made. Entry forms

will also have to be completed again for Insurance purposes.

Walkathon Total

A very BIG thank you to all people who sponsored students to walk in the Walkathon. The students have

raised an amazing $8500. This money will go towards new reading resources in the primary school. A

fantastic effort by all.

Sports Reports Netball Regional Finals Earlier this term our 7/8 Netball team won their local Netball Gala Competition. As a result, the girls went on to

compete at the regional finals. These were held last Wednesday 5 August in Maitland.

There was some tough competition throughout the day, with many of the rival teams consisting of Newcastle

representative players. Not only did this make it difficult but the girls were playing in dreadful weather conditions,

with strong winds and cold temperatures. The girls played 5 games and only went down in two, both with narrow

score margins. The Team’s final place ranked them 5th in our region for Netball. Congratulations on a wonderful

achievement and thank you for being such a beautiful team to coach. Thank you also to Abby McDonald who

helped at training and on the day!

HRIS Primary Athletics Carnival

On Wednesday 5 August 69 primary students went to Glendale to compete at the Division 1 Primary HRIS Athletics

Carnival.

It was a cold, windy day, which made some events difficult. All students tried really hard and showed great

support for their teammates.

There were some outstanding results over the course of the day which helped the Team come third overall. A

sensational effort.

Two Scone Grammar School students were awarded Age Champion for their efforts over the day; Lachlan Hails (8

years boys) and Edward Arnott (12 years boys). The 8 years boys also claimed the victory in their age group, with

the three boys; Lachlan Hails, Harry Warner and Nate Hughes dominating their events. There were many other

exceptional performances on the day and all members should be congratulated and feel proud of their efforts.

SCONE GRAMMAR SCHOOL

HISTORY TOUR 2017

Scone Grammar, with the support of Academy Travel, is proposing to run a History

Tour in 2017.

SGS has run tours in 2011 and 2013, based around the Stage 6 History studies of our students.

The nature of the tour will depend upon the History courses being studied here at SGS over the

next two years. The 2011 tour was to Greece (Athens and the Peloponnese), and Italy (Rome

and the Bay of Naples). In 2013, the school toured Paris and the Western Front and Rome and

the Bay of Naples.

These tours are designed to support Stage 6 historical studies and provide enrichment for

students and families alike. Further information will be available as the classes for 2016/2017

are confirmed.
