Dear Parents and Friends of SGS, We have experienced a very full week and these continue until we

finish the school year. We need to take time to refresh but also enjoy

the special activities.

Swim & Survive

Swim and Survive has commenced positively for the Primary students

with a cold wet week which we often find. This is a wonderful

programme and we look forward to seeing the growth and

development of each student as they spend this focused time in the

water.

NASC Celebration Day

Our Year 7 students travelled to Newcastle to join in a

combined service with all four Diocesan Schools. The

service was held in the Cathedral and involved the

students participating in the service and sharing together.

Bishop Greg and Bishop Peter where also sharing in the

service with the students. Our Chapel Band led the day

with outstanding music and singing. This is a celebration

of our Church and Christian connections.

Guy Claxton – Building Learning Power

At the weekend I had the pleasure of having dinner

with Guy Claxton, a Professor who is the originator

of the “Building Learning Power Programme”. It was

inspiring to speak with him about the positive impact

this particular programme is having on students in

different schools around the world. The Programme

enables students to continually build upon their

ability to learn, by focusing on learning dispositions.

A central language of learning not only enables

stronger results but develops learners for life. I will

look for opportunities for Professor Claxton to assist us in the implementation of “Building

Learning Power” at SGS.

We continue to thank God for the rain that is falling in the area and also for those who are

challenged by the rain that is impacting harvest.

Primary News from Mr Saunders There is not a night goes by when I’m not summonsed to my children’s bedroom to read a book with them or have

a book read to me before it’s ‘lights out’. For what seems like a pretty simple exercise for me is actually having a

long term impact on my kids. A child’s love of reading begins at home and I feel that I have an obligation, as a

parent, to positively establish this love of books and love of reading. As teachers we do everything in our power to

encourage a love of reading with our students but it will only ever work if it is happening in the home environment

as well. It’s always wonderful for children to see their parents read, whether it be a book, a magazine or, in my

case, the sport’s section of the newspaper!

I stumbled across some lovely quotes that promote the importance of nurturing a positive attitude towards reading.

I hope you enjoy.

A book is a gift you can open again and again. - Garrison Keillor

There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the

right book. - Frank Serafini

Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a

precious gift. - Kate DiCamillo

To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark. - Victor Hugo

Read everything you can get your hands on. Read until words become your friends. Then when you

need to find one, they will jump into your mind, waving their hands for you to pick them. And you can

select whichever you like, just like a captain choosing a stickball team. - Karen Witemeyer

A lot of people ask me if I were shipwrecked and could only have one book, what would it be? I

always say, “How to Build a Boat.” - Stephen Wright

Reading is important, because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and

everything about anything. - Tomie dePaola

I will defend the importance of bedtime stories to my last gasp. - JK Rowling

This is the last week that Charlotte Chopin (5 Blue) will be raising money to help Cure Brain Cancer. She will be

cutting off her lovely, long hair this thursday which will go towards the making of wigs for a cancer patient

undergoing treatment. Charlotte has now raised over $2400. This is simply remarkable!!

I have again copied the link to Charlotte’s fundraising page below if you would like to assist.

From the Chaplain One of life’s most common oversights is not taking time to say thanks. We get in such a rush that we often forget.

I heard again this week the story in Luke 17 about how ten men with the dreaded disease of leprosy met Jesus.

These men were a long distance away, for leprosy was the most feared disease of that day. They were outcasts;

people didn’t want to touch them for fear of getting the disease. These lepers cried out to Jesus to have mercy on

them and He did. He healed them all. What a fantastic day that must have been! Those ten men got so excited

that they all began to run and tell what had happened. But one turned around and took time to worship and thank

Jesus- just one. Jesus asked him, “Weren’t there ten? Where are they?” Even God desires to hear thanks.

This week, don’t miss a great opportunity to take time to say thanks – to God for His blessings – to teachers,

friends and loved ones – and to any who have helped you along the way. Most of all try and find time to thank

God for sending us Jesus who has made a way for us to be friends with God!

Weekly Chapel Bible passages and relevant links can be found at twitter.com/sgschapel

In Prayer this week:

and teachers at The Yellow Cottage Pre School; For your son or daughter’s teacher/s! (specific prayer requests can

The Yellow Cottage Tales

The Yellow Cottage turned PINK on Friday to support Hugh

Bateman as he travelled through Scone on his pink tractor

raising money for the McGrath Foundation. We cannot

thank you all enough for your generosity and support. The

children were so excited to be part of this fund raising

project. It was such a feel good day!! A big, special thank

you to Tobie who suggested we support this project and

coordinated a lot of the details that made it possible to

raise $900.00.

This week we continue to welcome the children who are going to start at The Yellow Cottage

in 2016. It has been lovely to have them come for a play. It is always a pleasure to meet new

families as they prepare to join our Yellow Cottage family.

The children have been taking part in some fantastic learning projects. Georgi’s Group

continues to investigate plants and how they grow; Kirsty’s Group have gone Dinosaur mad;

Emma’s Group are furthering their interest in outer space and Jane’s Group have been singing

pirate songs, reading pirate books and learning lots about pirate life.

All the children have been enjoying learning the songs we are performing at Carol Night and at

our End of Year Celebration; please make sure you have noted those dates. We would love to have all our

families attend these special nights.

Below are some important dates for your diaries, this term will go very fast and we are very busy.

Please note them down.

HRIS Primary Chess Gala Day On Friday, 23 October, 23 primary students travelled to Avondale to compete in the HRIS Primary Chess Gala

Day. There were over 200 students competing in Teams of 4. Many of our students were attending their first

ever Chess Tournament. All players performed well on the day with each player winning at least one of their

seven games. Noah McGrath was the best performing Scone Grammar School student, winning 6 of his 7

games. Every student represented their school well and should proud of their efforts.

Bishop Essay Presentation Evening 2015 On Wednesday evening 28 October, Phoebe Smith and Philipa Steedman

were awarded first and second place in the annual Bishop Essay

Competition. This Competition has been run by the Scone Historical Society

for over 40 years. The girls had produced research essays as assessments

in their Elective History classes. Phoebe’s essay was titled ‘The Life and

Contributions of Betty and Bertie Armitage to the Scone and Upper Hunter

Region’; it traced the story of the Armitages, the building of their lovely

stone house “Rivelin” and the many ways in which both Bertie and Betty

were active within the Scone Community. Philipa’s Essay, ‘One Unforgettable Day’, traced the life and times of

Edward Denny Day, the policeman who held many positions in the Hunter Region and who was responsible for

helping to bring the perpetrators of the Myall Creek Massacre to justice as well as capturing the notorious Jew

Boy Gang who terrorised Upper Hunter communities, including Scone, in the 1840s. The judge of the essays

commended both particularly for their writing style and their ability to keep their readers engaged in the stories

being told. The girls read their essays to members of the Scone Historical Society and families present and

acquitted themselves very well. Congratulations to both on receiving these awards!

CFMEU Essay Competition

Recently the CFMEU (Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union) invited students from across the Hunter

Valley to participate in an essay writing competition. Students were required to write an essay on the role and

value of unions to Australian workers.

Congratulations to Year 10 Commerce students Millie Steedman, Caitlin Dart and Lauryn Crackett, whose essays

were chosen as winning entries. For their efforts, our school has been awarded a grant with which we have

purchased 13 ASUS T100 10.1 detachable 2-in-1 notebooks, which are to be kept for use in Commerce classes

and within the HSIE Department. Each of these students volunteered their time and produced outstanding work

which has benefitted all students. Their efforts are much appreciated!
