NEWSLETTER BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL CASABLANCA N° 4 - NOVEMBER 10 th , 2017 Dear Parents, We are delighted to announce the start of our week- end swimming Club with Mr Firas. This will start this weekend for those who have signed up and takes place between 9am and 10am for regular swim- mers and 10am and 11am for elite swimmers. We look forward to seeing the clear improvements. Equally the early signs from the extra English ses- sions (in place of Extras for some pupils) is starting to show signs of progress. The Language School will be in touch regarding other session times in due course. You should have received an invitation to an event which has always been a lovely event in my previous schools: The Grandparent’s Tea Party on November 24th. Please can I ask that you let Reception know if you intend coming so we can cater for the right number of guests. Furthermore just another reminder that the Prophet’s Birthday holiday has now been clarified as being on Friday 1st December only. The school will be closed on this day only. Finally to reassure everyone, in light of a couple of genuine accidents on the playground, we have stepped up supervision, retrained staff, and made modifi- cations to our practices to minimise the chances of such accidents happening again. Given the nature of play and learning from play, we can never 100% guar- antee this but we are doing all we reasonably can. Have a lovely weekend Mr Northcott Executive Principal

NEWSLETTERBRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL CASABLANCA

N° 4 - NOVEMBER 10th, 2017

Dear Parents ,We are delighted to announce the start of our week-

end swimming Club with Mr Firas. This will start this weekend for those who have signed up and takes place between 9am and 10am for regular swim-mers and 10am and 11am for elite swimmers. We look forward to seeing the clear improvements.

Equally the early signs from the extra English ses-sions (in place of Extras for some pupils) is starting to

show signs of progress.

Finally to reassure everyone, in light of a couple of genuine accidents on the playground, we have stepped up supervision, retrained staff, and made modifi-cations to our practices to minimise the chances of such accidents happening again. Given the nature of play and learning from play, we can never 100% guar-antee this but we are doing all we reasonably can.

Have a lovely weekend

Nursery

Thank you to all the parents who attended our parents evening to discuss your child’s work. Please continue to share and support your child’s learning

journey by talking about what they are learning and reading to them daily. If you have any questions regarding your child’s progress or report, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher.

Our topic this term is transport and we’ve made a fabulous start. Your

child will be learning about vehicles that move on land, sea and air. The children will be learning key vocabulary associated with modes of transport such as cars and bikes, building their own models, learning about road safety and signs to look out for. You can help your children at home by pointing out things they see as you’re out driving around; number signs, different modes of transport, counting different coloured cars.

This week the children loved learning the song ‘Wheels on the Bus’ and we

even got the chance to sit in the school minibus. The children were able to apply their newly learnt vocabulary and we even gave the bus a good scrub! What fun!

We have also begun learning our letters and sound through the phonics program ‘Jolly Phonics’. This hands-on learning program teaches the sounds of the alphabet through actions, games and songs. Last week we learnt ‘s’ and this week we have introduced ‘a’. Sounds are the foundations for reading and writing, giving the children a base to begin recognizing letters within their environment. Can you find any ‘s’ or ‘a’?

ReceptionReception Travel into Space!

Reception have been going into very exciting adventures into space that started when we found some mysterious space rocks in our class. After some close inves-

tigation, we decided they must have come from the moon. We visited the moon as astronauts using our space shuttle and also with our friend Baby Bear from the story Whatever Next. We have learnt about the sun, Earth, the moon and stars and we can’t wait to explore more of the solar system!

Reception would also like to say well done to all the children who performed in the Green March. We had a great time watching and dancing!

Creating clear ideas about states of matter, Grade 3 have learned about the proper-ties of solids, liquid and gases. Working in teams, the students have learned how

to identify and categorise different states of matter.

Our students are revisiting simple mathematical problems to hone their number re-lations and facts. At present, Grade 3 are working on simple subtraction.

In English, the students are working on creating shape poems that rhyme and are nautically themed. Soon, the students will be learning how to create reports on a topic, providing a balanced an unbiased informational text.

After our return from the mid-term break, BISC has increased the output of extra English lessons and activities to raise the standard of English and literacy abili-

ties among our students, with evident success. And whilst students will continue to enjoy small, teacher led tuition to improve speaking, reading, writing and listening skills during English lessons, they also avail of additional English grammar, vocabu-lary, sentence construction and interpersonal communicative skills, as exciting and fun activities, after the formal lessons have finished.

On behalf of all the teaching staff, I would like to announce how extremely pleased with the superb progress made by all students, and to congratulate them on there perseverance and hard-working attitude.

Maths. This week we revised numbers to 100, 3-digit addition and 2D shapes

& 3D shapes via interactive whiteboard games and classroom activities.

This week and last, Grade 1 have been working on new sounds in English - we are now studying double letters and doing very well! 2D and 3D shapes have been adorning

our classroom in maths and our children are able to recognise the scientific differences between types of animals, such as mammals, amphibians and invertebrates. The chil-dren are very excited in class and are now practicing various songs in Music and Drama in preparation for our end of term concert!

Grade 4

Grade 5

In Grade 4 we have had a very interesting time getting to know our new teacher Mr. Jones, he is British and he has travelled and taught in many different countries. In

Maths we have been looking at place value up to and beyond tens of thousands, some of us even went as far as millions! In English we have been talking and writing about ourselves and our holidays, we have tried to extend our sentences and make them more interesting. We have also found out about the major rivers in Africa and the coun-tries they run through, see the map below. All in all it’s been a busy time since returning to school and Mr. Jones promises us that it will continue like this.

In grade five we have been working on our global citizenship, how we think about the world as a global market for business and our responsibilities for sustainable living.

We have begun our journey into public speaking and how to conduct ourselves when delivering an educated argument for debate.

All classes have hit the ground running with painting in their art classes. Similar to last half term, we will focus on a particular artist; this term

it is Wassily Kandinsky. His use of colour and shape is great for all ages to study. In our first week, we have been experimenting with colour mixing which is particularly important for early years development. See if your children can remember which primary colours can be mixed to make a new colour! In the coming weeks, we will be experimenting further with paint, colour and tools.
