ü Michel studied composition, arrangement and improvisation at BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC Boston/Mass. USA with teachers like Herb Pomeroy, Gary Burton…sponsorded by a full grant from the Minister of French Foreign Affairs and a scolarship from Berklee..

ü His Sextet won the jazz band contest of the Sorgues Festival 87…

ü …and the First Price of the Minister of Culture at the national contest of Paris-La Défense Festival 88. On this occasion Michel also won the composer price from the SACEM.

ü State diploma jazz educator.

Michel was born in Marseille and began with the guitar before making his early professional début on bass guitar alongside his father, himself a highly esteemed guitarist. During his studies at the Marseille Conservatoire Jazz Class, Michel switched to the double bass and, although self-taught, developed his unique technique inspired by the practice of yoga. After studying jazz composition and arranging at Berklee College of Music, Boston, USA, he settled in Paris where he soon became a first-rate musician working extensively with some of the most prestigious names in jazz: Barney Wilen, Christian Vander, Manuel Rocheman, François Jeanneau, Simon Goubert, among others. He has also toured Europe, the USA, South America, Central Asia and Africa. In 2008, Michel was invited to perform a solo concert at the BASS 2008 PARIS International Double Bass Meeting. “An excellent player, inventive with abundant technique, a fine tone and quick ears…,” Ray Comeskey, The Irish Times. “Generous sensitive virtuoso…,” J.L Caradec, La Terrasse. Listed as, “musical encounter of the year,” (Le Monde), Mario Canonge-Michel Zenino duo “has become an established classic in Paris, Rue des Lombards…..a powerful idea of happiness.” (Michel Contat, Télérama). Their “burning one-on-one” (20 Minutes Paris) has been resident at the Baiser Salé for more than 5 years. A record! As a composer and arranger, Michel won two national band contests in Sorgues 87 and Paris-La Défense 88: “Zenino sextet has confirmed its place as one of the best groups in France…” Jean-Paul Ricard. “A unanimous vote for first prize in the national competition organized by the Ministry of Culture…..”, Paris –La Défense. “A great lesson in music,” Frank Bergerot, Jazz Magazine. Since then, he has been involved in many projects as a co-leader or leader: Dérive Gauche (featuring Alain Jean-Marie), Ogham (with Tommy Halferty), Massaliazz (with Olivier Temime), each one earning praise from the critics. The national radio, France Musique, opened its live broadcast concert season 2009 giving ‘carte blanche’ to the composer-bassist band leader. As director of studies at the Musical Institute of Professional Training in Salon de Provence since 1990, Michel Zenino is a renowned jazz educator and has run workshops and given masterclasses all over the world, from the National Superior Music Conservatoire in Paris to Almati’s National Conservatoire of Kazakhstan via the prestigious Trinity College, Dublin. Michel has also recently been chosen as coordinator and consultant for the new superior jazz diploma at the National Conservatoire in Rennes. Michel’s recent news include the release of the DVD, “Live In Porquerolles”, with Martiniquais pianist, Mario Canonge, the CD “Massaliazz” containing his trademark arrangements of songs from his hometown. Also upcoming are the recordings of a live album with US pianist, Michael Wolff, Danish sax Simon Spang-Hansen quintet, French drummer Simon Goubert’s new quintet as well as Michel’s own new compositions and arrangements for his new band.
