Thursday 12 October 2017 Dear Parents & Friends of Kuyper,

Term 3 was another busy term which concluded with the inaugural Super Duper Dinkum Dinky Derby Day! Dinky tricycles, recumbent trikes and go-karts of all shapes and sizes made an appearance at Mount Kuyperama. Students from Prep all the way through to our senior students eagerly attended to their vehicles, ensuring each machines’ smooth working and accurate steering. It was wonderful to observe the number of students who had painstakingly built their go-kart. Many other committed students had purchased theirs especially for the event. Every driver enthusiastically donned their helmets and took to the mountain. The events held on the basketball court were also exciting to watch; the thrill of racing clearly evident on every smiling face. Thanks to Mr Shaw and Mr Thompson for making the day possible, and all the enthusiastic family and friends who came to share in the day.

Year 7 History students enjoyed Egyptian Day on the last Thursday of Term 3. They had already prepared traditional food, from ancient recipes that featured onions, spinach, mixed beans and some sweet delicacies. Students adventurously tried all the foods. They dressed in costume and presented their research tasks, which were very creative and of an excellent standard. Mummification of eggplants and mummy relays were other enjoyable aspects of the day.

At the Year 12 Farewell Celebrations, we prayed for our Year 12 students on their final school day. Each student has played a key role in our school community and we wish them well as they commence their HSC examinations next week. Paul writes in 1 Timothy 6:17, ‘Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment’. Although the HSC can potentially be an onerous and stressful task, these verses encourage us to remain undaunted and confident in the secure promises of God. The examinations are one piece of a larger picture. The Lord is always faithful and has our future in His hands. Please keep our Year 12s in your prayers over the coming weeks as they sit their examinations. We look forward to celebrating with them soon at their Graduation. Anna Robertson, Secondary Teacher

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. 1 Corinthians 10:31-33 Today, the internet is being sold to us as a need rather than a want and it is becoming an increasingly difficult task to teach our children discernment when it has become somewhat essential to our daily lives. We live in a world where a large portion of our communication is completed via the internet, particularly in the form of social media. Is it really making that much of an impact in our Kuyper community? Yes, I believe it is! I recently surveyed our high school students and more than 80% of our students have accounts on social media with some students having up to 7 different accounts or more! I don’t know about you but I have enough trouble keeping up with people face to face, let alone online! What is concerning is that this form of technology evolves daily and it is often the case that our own children know more about it than we do as parents. We now have Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Viber… As soon as I learn how to navigate one social media site, it has become ‘dated’ and a new one has replaced it. I often hear, “Miss, we don’t use that very often anymore, now there is …..”. From personal experience, social media has impacted my life both positively and negatively. Its usage has offered an opportunity for me to connect with new people I would have never met otherwise and chat with friends I have lost touch with over time. It has helped me to communicate instantaneously with people all over the world; how amazing is that! However, like all tools God has provided us with, we need to use it with wisdom and we need to teach our own children how to use it with discernment and for His Glory. Statistics have shown that many adults struggle with social media usage. If we are struggling, how much more difficult is it for our children to navigate social media? We can liken it to learning how to drive a car (or a billycart). Would you let your children drive without telling them how to? Without outlining the rules? Of course, you wouldn’t! We want to protect our children and keep them safe whether it’s learning how to drive or driving social media. If our children never learn the ‘road rules’ how will they navigate cyber space safely? If we don’t know the rules ourselves how can we support our children to make responsible decisions? Over the coming weeks in the newsletter, I will be including a short article about different types of social media, their strengths, weaknesses and helpful ways to keep our children accountable. This won’t only involve my personal perspective, I will also talk to the students about the positives and negatives of social media and provide information based on extensive research. I encourage you to have the conversation about social media with your children before you hand over the keys. Alexis Clark, Secondary Teacher
