us with Christmas Carols. Her hubby joined her this

Happy Birthday, KIWANIS. Kiwanis is 105
years old. The Detroit #1 Club, the first club
formed (in the world), has the privilege of
hosting the annual birthday party. (See schedule
on flyer below). They’ve changed it up:
The Founders Day Celebration will be held
on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00.
International President Daniel Vigneron will be
participating and joining us for lunch.
Meet Kyla Heaton. She is a junior
at EFHS and has been playing the
flute and piccolo for 7 years.
She was our guest on Dec. 10, as
she is the benefactor of our Youth
Symphony scholarship. She was
very grateful as she advised private
lessons are expensive.
Kyla played Mozart, Bizzet and 2
numbers from the Nutcracker.
Beautiful job! She is in both the
symphonic and marching band at
school. She was lovely!

A 2nd
Kiwanis-Rotary Outing! HENRY FORD COLLEGE BIG BAND,
BOP & POP Concert to be held at the Ford Performing Arts Center on Saturday,
January 25, 2020. David Anderson from the Dearborn Rotary has invited DOD for
a dinner (at Park Place) followed by Bop & Pop concert. Is there Kiwanis interest?
Sounds fun, right? Who doesn’t enjoy a night out with dinner and a concert?
$25 for the show, Park Place buffet dinner beforehand; not sure of Amount!
If this interests you, let Peggie know. 313.460.4171
THE BUILDER will soon be a fleeting
memory. Apparently, statistics were
collected and maybe 5% of Kiwanians
even open it up.
So rumor has it,
it’s being discontinued.
The Specials Dances are put
on by the City once a month;
every dance has a theme. Of
course December, Santa
arrives. For those of you not
on FB, here’s what you
missed. Our very own
President Roger volunteered
to wear the Suit. And he wore
it well! He was a great Santa,
truly enjoyed the experience.
Here are a few pics from
Dec. 10. Thank you Roger,
I’m sure we’ll see you in the
Dome in 2020; right!
CHRISTMAS BINGO – Dec. 17, 2019
Of course, this is one of the Somers favorite BINGOs. They
shop for prizes for weeks and spend several days baking 14
doz. cookies plus wrapping prizes. This year, the day before
Bingo, they were on a Jet to Thailand because Jennie’s dad
died. He sounded like an amazing selfless man; you can read
their treasured story about Jennie’s dad at the end of the
newsletter. (I grabbed Mark’s post off FB).
But BINGO must go on, and as you can see, another
great job on the cookies, People!

Judge Mark Somers and Jennie are currently in Thailand due to the death of Jennie’s Dad. For those of you who do not have FACEBOOK, this article is taken off Mark’s FB page.
By Mark & Jennie Somers: Good morning western hemisphere and good evening to the east. Whether
your New Year's day is dawning or slipping into night may it give you a moment to spend in whatever way you
choose to quiet the noise that surrounds you and think about whatever is truly important to you.
The photograph posted is of Jennie's dad, Rabil Nanakul, who passed away on December 14, 2019, at the age of
94 after a brief hospital stay near his home in Chiang Rai, Thailand. He lived a full life and was filled with life.
As a teenager he joined the Thai Free Army to resist the Japanese in WWII. He graduated from the Royal Thai
Police Academy, earned a graduate degree in California, served as a District Officer (much like a county
executive) in southern Thailand and was later elected as a member of the Thai Parliament. It was Rabin's anti-
corruption stance that got him transferred out of the district by a corrupt governor, only to launch him into
Parliament by the grateful citizens of the Chawang District he served and who described him as "the best friend
we ever had." The Chawang district is located within the three southern Muslim-majority provinces of Thailand.
Beyond his anti-corruption actions, Rabin was an advocate for providing his constituents with bi-lingual
(Thai/Arabic) education and for peaceful resolution of a separatist movement. His courage was tested but never
failed, even in coming face to face with a would-be assassin. When it came to service for others, doing the right
thing was the only thing to do. Rabin received official recognition and honors from representatives on behalf of
the Thai Royal family at his funeral.
He received the loving attention of his six children.
This New Years we are grateful for the life of Rabin, "dad", grateful to have
had the chance to be with family in Thailand these past two weeks, and grateful,
always grateful, for every moment we spend quieting the noise that surrounds us
in order to think about what is truly important.
Wishing all of you, all the best in 2020!
Mark & Jennie
