LECTURES NOTES ON DEATH

Man is a being-towards-death, and in death man comes to grip with this wholeness and brings to completion the commitment of his whole self to the whole of reality

Death is the completion and wholeness of a mans reality

WHAT IF AN ARMED ASSASSIN POINTS A GUN AT YOU, AND ITS FINGERS ARE ON THE TRIGGER

HOW WOULD YOU FEEL?...Death is on its way to you. Now. Death never misses. No one gets out alive. Your death, is something you must face alone.. It waits for you: the ultimate unknown..

MAN AS DASEIN Dasein translates to there-being/being there in its philosophicalsense.

Man is RATIONAL, HISTORICAL, EMBODIED, SOCIAL and a MYSTERY. Man is thrown into the world ( HISTORICAL) Discovers himself there (RATIONAL) Absorbed in things (EMBODIED) In people (SOCIAL) Constantly realizing his potentialities for being (MYSTERY)

MARTIN HEIDEGGER'S PHENOMENOLOGY OF DEATH BY MANUEL B. DY JR.The being of man is a being in the world. There-being with others, solicitude. The being of man is Dasein, There-being is the There of Being among beings-it lets beings be (manifest), thereby rendering all encounter with them possible CARE, the fundamental structure of Dasein.

Primary item in care is ahead-of-itself of Dasein. As long as man exists in the world, his potentiality for being is never exhausted. Man as long as he IS, has never reached his wholeness. Man always has an unfinished character as long as man exists in the world. Man reaches his wholeness in death In DEATH: Man loses his potentiality or being He loses his being there; everything is finished, settled for him. He is no longer being there.

MAN wont be a dasein forever. Man should not be seen merely as a dasein but also as a BEING-TOWARDSDEATH(patungo sa kamatayan)

WHAT IS DEATH? It is the transition of man from Dasein to no longer Dasein. It is IMPOSSIBLE FOR MAN TO EXPERIENCE THIS SITUATION. A dead man can no longer experience, and no one has ever come out of death alive.

CHARACTERISTICS OF DEATH:Death is always MINE (Death is Personal)Our first and only experience of death is the death of others. Heidegger believes that death is not representable. No one can take the others dying away from him. Death is always mine where the totality of man is involved.

Death is UNIVERSAL (without exception) Death is IMPENDING and INEVITABLE (paparating na hindi maiiwasan)

DEATH AND MAN S FULFILMENT As long as man exists, he lacks a totality, a wholeness and this lack is brought to its end in death. Not yet of man vs. not yet of an unripen fruit so little is it the case that Dasein comes to its ripeness only with death, that Dasein, may will have passed its ripeness before the end. For most part, Dasein ends in unfulfillment.. -Martin Heidegger

INAUTHENTIC ATTITUDE TOWARDS DEATHPeople die..one of these days, one will die too, in the end; but right now it has nothing to do with us. An attitude of DENIAL and EVASION. A constant fleeing in the face of death. For the inauthentic, to talk about death and be anxious about it is a sign of weakness.

REASONS WHY PEOPLE FEAR DEATH1. It is a mystery. -Not knowing what will happen after death.. 2. Fear of SEPARATION. In death, man is separated physically from his body, from his loved ones, and from his possessions. -

ANTICIPATION AND ANXIETY: KEYS TO AUTHENTICITY Authentic response of man is ANTICIPATION and ANXIETY. Facing the POSSIBILITY of death as a possibility of no longer being there. By anticipation, man comes close to death. -St. Paul

KARL RAHNER S NOTION OF DEATH Death is an act of man, an act of self-affirmation in regards to his acceptance or refusal to be his authentic self, a self that is open to transcendence. Death constitutes the highest act of freedom of man, the freedom to say yes or no to his openness to God because death involves the whole man. There is no longer any concupiscence, means the evil that lessens the power of man to choose between good and evil; it is the power that prevents man from making a total commitment either to the good or the evil.

Death brings a kind of finality, a definite to the life-long decision of man with regards to his destiny. Death should be taken as the culminating point of life, the point where he finally reaches a fulfilment, a totality. It is understood and it becomes significant only if it is considered against the background of the totality of mans life, because the very issue is no other than mans total being, his total commitment. Every free act of man should carry an awareness of his fulfilment to a commitment, a realization that his one free act helps to build a total decision of his whole being to the good (or to the bad).

Death should therefore be present in every free act of man. Every free act of man should carry an awareness of his fulfilment to a commitment, a realization that his one free act helps build a total decision of his whole being to the good (or to the bad). The very presence of death is in the very presence of man..

DEATH, THE TEST OF LOVE & THE CONDITION OF LIBERTY BY ROGER TROISFONTAINES, S.J.Death: a final misfortune, without issue or remedy. A loss of life. Inescapable Part of Life We cannot explain it because it is inexperienceable We fear death and we use all our strength to forget it.

Different attitudes towards death: Denial denies reality of death Anger displeasure when talking about death Depression extreme sadness Fear fear of separation Acceptance act of taking the truth Thrill/ Something to enjoy

Fear Separation Always connotes suffering, pain, misfortune, and sorrow. Death - Rupture of a certain mode of union with the world, with beloved person, with his own body.

DEATH: THE TEST OF LOVE

Rises up as a criterion of our affections. Our reaction to it differs according to whether our attachment is made heavy with the FLESH or lifted to the spirit.

DEATH : THE TEST OF LOVEViewpoint in Life & Death (by Saints) As a saint like me, we view life as a service to other mankind, it is loving them unconditionally, we are devoted by helping them, its makes us happy, we feel pleasure in giving our own hands.. St. Theresa of the Child Jesus I shall pass my heaven in doing good on earth (I am Theresa, I would rather stay longer here on land so I can help everyone because I know they much need my help and God would understand me.)

St. Teresa of Avila I die because I cannot die (I am Teresa from Avila, I offered my life with God in a way that I keep on helping others, I serve them and love them without any hesitations and thats how I finally lived with God.)

St. John Come, Lord Jesus, do not tarry do not tarry means don't let me wait for long.. (I am John, I accept my death with a trembling joy and I feel so excited to live with God.)

St. Paul I wish to be dissolved that I maybe with Christ (I am Paul, and I just cant wait to be with Christ.)

For us saints, Death is a way to be with GOD. Love is greater than death. With authentic saints, the love of Christ can be so intense that, without doing anything to hasten the moment of their death, they await trembling joy.

Through the example of Christ we know that DEATH is a PATH, not an ENDING. The lowest depth of Hell will be that in which the being centered on himself in isolation, will wholly exclude the others and wish himself without them. The highest degree of Heaven will be that in which the being wills itself wholly with the others, in a communion of love with all reality. We enter REALITY nevertheless depends on our liberty.

HOW DEEPLY IS YOUR LOVE FOR GOD, FOR YOUR FAMILY, NEIGHBOUR, CLASSMATE, OR SOMEONE? Are you willing to sacrifice your own life just to test your love with them? HOW ABOUT IF YOUR DEATH WOULD GIVE THEM HAPPINESS, ARE YOU WILLING TO GIVE IT? Can you love unconditionally? And for God, How big can you give for Him? Can you do what he have done for us? Have you ever come to realized it? Think for awhile. And this is how death test your love.

VIEWPOINT IN LIFE & DEATH (BY R. TROISFONTAINES)He views life as a long journey Man is very limited in his freedom. He has not even chosen to exist He gradually takes up all the element that characterize him. (race, nationality, religious, family, language, etc.) But he choses the attitude which will define him. Disproportion between his body and his imagination.

During maturity, we often focus ourselves in our personal value, work, actions and family The son of his work After the soul separate from its body, thats the only time where everything starts Real Life -Death is not an ending, instead it is a path. (Path to live with God.) -Eternity becomes reality in us. -Happiness is measured by union, suffering by rupture. a. Highest degree of heaven b. Lowest depth of hell -Mastering the attitudes in proportion as we attain to spiritual autonomy

It depends on us whether God is real or inexistent. I am becoming free, I am not get free in the full sense of the world.

PURGATORY under a temporal mode. Two phenomena: 1.Conversion from mediocrity (playing safe) With--Without 2.Contrary an exacerbation of want on egoism Egoism Charity A choice between these two attitudes is at the heart of all our actions, and the attitude gives the action its character Death call forth liberty and reveals the depth of light.

DEATH: THE CONDITION OF LIBERTYLIBERTY: a privilege especially to go freely within specified limits PLATONIC Formula: Life, the Apprenticeship for death The act of liberty essentially answers an invitation. We create ourselves as a free person. Only in meeting another, only in corresponding with the grace of god.

Death calls forth liberty, and reveals the depths of hearts. It is once the test of love and the condition of liberty, because liberty has no other deep significance than that is permits love. Death will merely change the form of their love; it will not destroy anything.
