Death Water
Pollution has indeed caused different effects on human, animals and plants.
What is pollution? Based on Oxford Advanced Leaner’s Dictionary, pollution is the state
of being dirty. There are many types of pollutions. Some of the pollutions are water
pollution, soil pollution, air pollution, noise pollution and oil pollution. One of the
pollution’s types, water pollution, gives dangerous effects to the surrounding. In 2006,
the Department of Environment (DOE) reported that 18 956 water pollution sources
mainly came from sewage treatment plants, manufacturing industries, animal farms and
agro-based industries. Can we imagine the effects of this kind of pollutants on our
surroundings?
Water pollution may cause waterborne diseases such as giardiasis and
ascariasis. What is giardiasis and ascariasis? Based on free Wikipedia, giardiasis is a
diarrheal infection of the small intestine by an organism known as Giardia Lamblia. It is
estimated that 20-30% worldwide people in developing country infected with this
disease. In the US, it is reported annually that, 20 000 people infected with the same
disease. Ascariasis is infections which happen in the small intestine cause by the
parasitic roundworm known as Ascavis Lumbricoides. The infection of this disease
reported about 1 billion cases in the US. These infections usually happen after we
consume food or drink contaminated with roundworm eggs.
Beside that, leachate may also happen resulting from this pollution. Based on
Impak Journal, leachate is a poisonous dark-liquid produces by the soil pollution which
then causing the water pollution to happen. It gives a strong impact on the environment
and geology. It also causes eutrophication, an artificial nutrient enrichment which later
leads to algal bloom. This phenomenon will cause the depletion of oxygen in the river.
At the level of oxygen in the water decrease, death may happen in aquatic life from lack
of oxygen. Some bacteria produced can release dangerous toxins which affect birds
and mammals including human by causing paralysis known as botulism.
Lastly, based on the study by Brunel University, the University of Exeter and
Reading and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, a group of testosterone-blocking
2
chemical found in UK rivers affect the wildlife and potentially human. These happen
when the chemicals such as pesticides used in agriculture gets into the water. These
testosterone-blocking inhibit the function of the male hormone, testosterone, thus
reducing the male fertility. Industrial chemical may also reduce fish breed capability
which then leads to the changing of sex for the male fish. Dr Susan Jobling from Brunel
University’s Institute for the Environment stated that, there a re possibility of the human
male to be affects by this hormonal problem as the same chemicals contain can affect
the human male fertility by causing testicular dysgenesis syndrome.
In a nutshell, water pollution gives dangerous effects to the surrounding. It may
cause waterborne diseases such as giardiasis and ascariasis. It also may cause the
dangerous phenomenon such as leachate which then lead to other dangerous
phenomenon and may also decline the male fertility. These dangerous effects may
affect our own family and the whole of humanity. So, what we need to do? Try asking
ourselves for the sake of humanity.
