A big thank you for making Project Heartland Share &
Care an astounding success! We raised a total of
$13,303.32 after the dollar-to-dollar matching by Kaplan
Singapore. The funds raised were used to purchase
goodies for the 250 beneficiaries who were living in one-
bedroom rental flats in Bukit Merah and Bendemeer
public housing estates.
These beneficiaries are needy elderly residents registered with the Lions Befriender
Service Association, our partner for this meaningful charity project. Organised by
Student Affairs and Graduate Services office and supported by Kaplan Student
Committee and Kaplan Singapore, this repeat event
saw more than 200 students, staff and lecturers
pitching in to raise funds and lend a hand to pack and
eventually distribute the goodies over the month-long
campaign.
15 November 2014 was the distribution day and a
volunteer strength of 100 Kaplan students and staff
took time off from their busy schedules to deliver goodies door-to-door, bringing
smiles to the elderly residents. Volunteers were split into 2 groups to serve each
estate, with Bukit Merah having the largest group of volunteers to distribute 150
sets of food and basic necessities while Bendemeer volunteers served 100
beneficiaries. Volunteers also spent time to interact and chat with the elderly residents. Seeing their appreciative
smiles was enough to warm our hearts and make the effort all worth it! To be continued on page 5…

For the second year in recent history, Kaplan Singapore Diploma students have finished first in Singapore and ahead of banking and finance industry professionals in external examinations awarded by the leading UK-Based Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment (CISI), a partner of Kaplan Singapore and the only partnership of its kind CISI shares with a Private Education Institute (PEI) in Singapore.
Indonesian student, Ms. Ivy Dian Pratiwi, tied for first place with two financial professionals
for the International Introduction to Securities and Investment paper, while her Malaysian classmate, Mr. Tang Wei Meng, finished outright first for the Combating Financial Crime paper.
The winners are shown here receiving their awards from Mr Leon Choong, Executive Vice-President, Kaplan Singapore and Mr Kevin Moore, Managing Director, CISI, who flew in for the awards ceremony held at Kaplan City Campus at Pomo on Selegie Road.
The two winners join a former graduate and local part-time student, Mr Chang Yixiong, who finished first in the International Investment Management exam 2012, and now has his own business in the financial industry.
Notably, the two students and their classmates sat for the prestigious examinations as part of their Diploma in Banking, Securities and Investment Management with the School of Diploma Studies in the Kaplan Higher Education Academy and Mr Tang Wei Meng.
Both students have since graduated the Diploma and articulated with advanced standing into a Bachelor of Science In Finance with University College Dublin.
Kaplan Singapore is proud of our students, our lecturers and our relationship with CISI and other leading industry associations. For more information on the programmes mentioned herein or any

Alumni Focus
Be inspired by the story of our Murdoch University graduate Tan Wei Choon Ashton, who is the
founder of Mindful Production and who actively makes time for community work.
Ever since he was young, Ashton has an acute interest in storytelling and creating images to
inspire people. This passion was what fuelled him to take up the Bachelor Degree in
Communication in Communication and Media Studies with Murdoch University in 2012. Ashton
said, “It serves to better equip myself to understand the cultural change, how media works in the
society, and the business aspects to marketing our brand.” After his graduation, Ashton, who had
been working in the media production industry for some years, mustered his courage and
resources to venture into opening his own film and photo production start-up. “Definitely,
knowledge gained from my degree has assisted me in understanding the society more. I am able to make better decisions towards
managing marketing and communication aspects.” Ashton even admitted that his textbook was a handy source of reference!
Ashton is also actively involved with The Morning Greeters which he co-founded with fellow
runner friends. The founders observed that running is a solitary sport and runners do not connect
with people around them when they are on their runs. Thus, they started greeting fellow runners
& park-users during their runs around parks and running trails. The Morning Greeters (TMG)
seeks to bring back the kampong-spirited culture into society through organized morning runs in
parks around Singapore. TMG has been continuously carrying out its weekly runs after the Island
Wide Run 2013. Since its inception, TMG has been featured on TV and radio channels multiple
times over the past two years for the great work they do.
Ashton said, “Though the impact might not be tremendous, TMG
believes that the little efforts we have put in are akin to a seed planted and we look forward to it
blossoming into a beautiful flower. The Morning Greeters gladly welcomes anyone who would like to
be a part of the Greet While You Jog movement and bring smiles to our community, our home”. Meet
the Morning Greeters at Potong Pasir MRT Station 7.30am on 4 Jan 2015 (Sunday) for their 2nd
Anniversary Run. For more details click here.
Greeters gather every Sunday for their Greet While You Jog movement. Do check out their Facebook
updates on the details of the weekly run. https://www.facebook.com/tm.greeters Here are some of the

Developing a Strategic Vision for Your Career Plan (part 1) How many times will you change careers in your lifetime? If you're like most people, you'll change careers at least several times over the course of your life. How successful you'll be in making transitions among careers can at least be partially attributed to the amount of career planning and preparation you've done.
Every job-seeker needs to take the time to step way from the day-to-day grind of work and spend quality time reflecting on your career and developing some plans for your future. Whether you love your current job and employer or feel frustrated and confined by your job, career planning can help. Think of career planning as building bridges from your current job/career to your next job/career; without the bridge, you may easily stumble or lose your way, but with the bridge there is safety and direction.
Short-Term Career Planning A short-term career plan focuses on a timeframe ranging from the coming year to the next few years, depending on the job-seeker. The key characteristic of short-term career planning is developing realistic goals and objectives that you can accomplish in the near future.
As you begin your career planning, take the time to free yourself from all career barriers. What are career barriers? There are personal barriers (such as lack of motivation, apathy, laziness, or procrastination), family pressure (such as expectations to work in the family business, follow a certain career path, or avoidance of careers that are below your status/stature), and peer pressure. And while career planning and career decision-making is an important aspect of your life, do not put so much pressure on yourself that it paralyzes you from making any real choices, decisions, or plans. Finally, career planning is an ever-changing and evolving process -- or journey -- so take it slowly and easily.
To help you with your career planning, consider using the following exercises to their fullest potential:
1. Analyze your current/future lifestyle. Are you happy with your current life-style? Do you want to maintain it or change it? Be sure to identify the key characteristics of your ideal lifestyle. Does your current career path allow you the lifestyle you seek?
2. Analyze your likes/dislikes. What kinds of activities -- both at work and at play -- do you enjoy? What kind of activities do you avoid? Make a list of both types of activities. Now take a close look at your current job and career path in terms of your list of likes and dislikes. Does your current job have more likes or dislikes?
3. Analyze your passions. Reflect on the times and situations in which you feel most passionate, most energetic, most engaged - and see if you can develop a common profile of these situations. Develop a list of your passions. How many of these times occur while you are at work?
4. Analyze your strengths and weaknesses. Step back and look at yourself from an employer's perspective. What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? Think in terms of work experience, education/training, skill development, talents and abilities, technical knowledge, and personal characteristics.
5. Analyze your definition of success. Spend some time thinking about how you define success. What is success to you: wealth, power, control, contentment...
6. Analyze your personality. Are you an extravert or an introvert? Do you like thinking or doing? Do you like routines or change? Do you like sitting behind the desk or being on the move? Take the time to analyze yourself first, then take one or more of these self-assessment tests.
7. Analyze your dream job. Remember those papers you had to write as a kid about what you wanted to be when you grew up? Take the time to revert back to those idyllic times and brainstorm about your current dream job; be sure not to let any negative thoughts cloud your thinking. Look for ideas internally, but also make the effort to explore/research other careers/occupations that interest you.
8. Analyze your current situation. Before you can even do any planning, clearly and realistically identify your starting point.

5. Develop a plan to get qualified. Make a list of the types of qualifications you need to enhance your standing for your next ca-
reer move, such as receiving additional training, certification, or experience. Develop a timeline and action plans for achieving
each type, being sure to set specific goals and priorities.
4. Compare your current profile with the qualifications developed in step 3. How far apart are the
two profiles? If fairly well-matched, it may be time to switch to a job-search. If fairly far apart,
can you realistically achieve the qualifications in the short-term? If yes, move to the next step; if
no, consider returning to the first step.
3. Pinpoint the qualifications
you need to move to the
next step in your career or
to make the move to a new
career path. If you're not
sure, search job postings and
job ads, conduct
informational interviews,
research job descriptions.
2. Conduct detailed career research and gather
information on the careers that most interest
you. Use the many resources we list in
our Career Research Checklist.
1. Identify your next career move. If you have
been examining multiple career paths, now is
the time to narrow down the choices and focus
on one or two careers.
Next month, we bring you part two of this series on developing career goals for the long-term planning and share with
you the handy resources to help you along!

Continued from page 5...
Once you've completed these exercises, the next step is to develop a picture of yourself and your career over the next few years. Once you've developed the mental picture, the final step is developing a plan for achieving your goal.

The Brand Called YOU 12 Nov 2014
Instead of getting confused over what information to put into their resumes after surfing
the net, 27 graduating students from various programs braved the wet weather and
attended our ever popular Writing Your Way To A Job Interview on 26 Nov 2014. This
quarterly workshop is part of the Career Development Series framework organized by
the Student Affairs and Graduate Services Office.
The smallest details such as text placement, font use and a cover letter insert will leave
a deep impression on hiring managers. Participants also learnt how they could showcase themselves a lot better
through a well-worked resume. The follow up workshop Managing Job Interviews is coming your way on 29 Jan
2014 (Thu) and will work on improving interview skills and showcase a mock interview segment. The next
resume-writing workshop is scheduled to run on 10 Feb 2015. For more details refer to page 9.
Mr Eugene Lee
Do you know what your personal brand is?
Many of today’s young graduates and
students do not realise that the
employment market has already tagged
them as Gen X and even more
importantly, there is pre-conceived
perceptions of Gen X employees. What do
potential employers think of Gen X candidates? Trainer Steven
Yeong walked through these points with the participants during the
workshop The Brand Called YOU on 12 Nov 2014. The graduating
students and alumni also learnt about the do’s and don’ts on the
first 100 days at work as part of their branding exercise.
This workshop is another career development workshop organized
by the Student Affairs and Graduate Services Office.

The Kaplan Knights were sorely tested in the BBAXN league season 18
when their 5-games winning streak was broken after the exciting draw

against a competitive MDIS team and beat their old rivals by a single
point in a hugely entertaining matchup of the PEIs on 9 Dec. Our Kaplan
