A Message from the President - Hello again everybody! I hope that all of you have had a wonderful holiday season. Jen and I
were fortunate enough to spend Christmas with my Mom and Dad down in Port St. Lucie,
Florida (about an hour above Palm Beach). Maddie and Big Frank are a few weeks into their
RV adventure throughout the south, and I am sure the south may never be the same again!!!
The 1st Annual Rockfish Tournament has come and gone, and I feel it was quite successful.
The weather was a little snotty a few days, but the fishing as a whole was pretty decent. I
would like to congratulate Jim Giles and Dale Withers on sweeping the top 3 spots. Those
boys fish hard and it is a well deserved win. Also Jim and Dale were very generous in
donating back their winnings to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital (as did several others). We
should all be proud of the efforts our club makes in the community. Thanks to Colin
Campbell for chairing the event, and Ake Marine for hosting the weigh ins (and being very
generous in donations to the winners). I am already excited for the second annual Rockfish
tourney.
Be sure to check out the new apparel display at the entrance to the club. The board put quite a
bit of thought into the display case, and I feel it turned out great!
As I was sitting in a restaurant near the park where Mom and Dad are staying a gentleman
struck up a conversation with Dad. It started out with a comment like, “I see you have a shirt
on from Ocean City…” or something like that. It turns out that the fellow (His name was
Tom, he didn’t give a last name) has spent quite a bit of time fishing with Jimmy Motsko and
still fishes the WMO with Marty Groff. It never ceases to amaze me that no matter where I
am, I run into people from OC (granted South Florida is crawling with northerners in the
winter time). I have been stopped walking to a fuel truck in South Caicos because I had a
Fagers Island T shirt on, only to find out that the old gentleman knew Capt. Dale Brown from
giant tuna fishing in the Bahamas in the 1960s. Another time while having dinner in the
Galapagos a man at the table next to me overheard me talking about OC. He struck up the
conversation asking me if I knew Capt. Buckshot and Slim Flinchum. Of course it hurt a little
to tell this gentleman that I did know both Buck and Slim, and that they had passed on. Thank
goodness he asked me about Big Al Fields next! Have fun in your travels this winter folks,
and make sure to sport your OC gear wherever you go, who know who you could meet.
Now for the fishing report. Conditions were bad for fishing while I was in the Palm Beach
area. On the day I left, however, a front moved through and the wind swung around out of the
north. I am expecting to hear that things have picked up. In following the internet reports it
looks like the action in Costa Rica has been consistently decent, I look forward to getting
Continued on next page.
A Message from the President—(continued) updates from Tucker, Josh and Howard in the coming weeks. I understand that over the next couple of
weeks that Pat Svehla will be doing some fishing in Guatemala (those poor sails do not know what is
in store for them!!!). It was also brought to my attention that Bill Pino was actually home for a brief
stay, but he will be back to peddling Squidnation Squids throughout the Pacific very shortly (if you do
not follow his exploits on Facebook you are really missing out). Congrats to the Squidmaster on his
recent tournament win in the PCCA series in Nicaragua! The final report I have is from Al Rittmeyer.
He and Sharon, along with Mo and Nancy Kalin, recently caught a few Striped Marlin down in Cabo
San Lucas. If you have never caught a stripey, by all means put it on our bucket list. Think White
Marlin on steroids and LSD. Oops, I almost forgot one last incredible catch. I am not sure who caught
who, but I am so thrilled for my friends Missy Van Fossen and Chris Evans. Missy landed her self a
fine engagement ring on Christmas Eve!!! Best of luck, love ya both!!!
In closing this month I would like to congratulate all of the incumbent Board members on being
re-elected. I would also like to thank the membership for their vote of confidence in the Board. We
will do our best to make 2014 an incredible year!
Happy New Year everybody!!!! Think Fish!!!
Till next time,
Franky Pettolina
