Review Day

Review Day is always a very important day in the school calendar, and it was wonderful to see so many of you

put your all into it. I hope you enjoyed presenting your MyLearning, as well as the dialogue with your tutor.

You should all now have your SMART targets – don’t let your tutor or yourself down – aim high and reach for

your goals!

Friday 6th December is a Training Day – school is closed this Friday. We welcome you back on Monday 9th

December.

It’s easy to get distracted at this time of year with only 2 weeks to go until the Christmas break – please come

back on Monday refreshed: it needs to be heads down and make the most of the final part of the term, until

we break up for Christmas on the 20th December.

Enjoy the Long Weekend!

Well done to 9 of our students who recorded with Stray FM’s James Stanley

show on Wednesday 4th December. Saffron Cockcroft, Beth Dicken-Jones,

Stuart Macgregor, Harry Watson, Emily Field, Eleanor Dear, Jonathan Kelly,

Imogen Parton and Lucy Hunter-Rowe all sounded wonderful.

They recorded segments for the show (to be broadcast on Friday 6th

December – it’s a training day so no excuse not to listen!) on Student Council,

Year 8’s three legged walk, Year 7 and Children in Need and even had the

chance to read the showbiz news and the weather!

Christmas Jumper Day - Jump to it!

We don’t usually hold two non-uniform days in a half term, but following the Philippines Typhoon Haigan we

want you to dig deep and give £1 minimum to this appeal via Save the Children – and wear a Christmas Jumper

on Friday 13th December. If you can’t get your hands on a jumper, then wear a Santa hat, some reindeer

antlers, a bauble badge, tinsel…you must wear something Christmassy or we’ll expect you to donate more!

Friday 13th is also Christmas Dinner day, so it’s a really good opportunity to eat and be merry for a very good

purpose.

You have a week to get sorted – and an extra shopping day tomorrow! Let’s show what we’re made of and

give generously to those who face a very traumatic Christmas time.

Well done and thank you to all of you who bought a poppy this year from your Key Stage Hub – all

together you raised nearly £200.

A 2 week trail has started for year 10 to take their bags with them into the Courtyard Café at lunchtime.-form.

Success Noticeboard!

Well done to our intermediate girls’ cross country team who competed in the ESAA National Finals on

Saturday in Southend. The flat course of Southend provided a different challenge to our girls who are more

used to the hilly terrain of Ilkley Moor, but without exception, all the girls 'ran their socks off' and really did us

proud! A creditable 11th position overall out of 24 schools…that's 11th in the country. Well done Sarah

Pickering (10ACD), Lucy Haines (10VEB), Jemima Elgood (10VEB), Lucy Jacques (10AJH), Zoe Judkowski

(10VEB) and Abbie White (10BB).

Well done to our U13 hockey team who travelled to Silcoates on Tuesday for the National Mini Hockey

Tournament. Being the only state school entered they beat Ackworth 3-0, drew with Rishworth 0-0, beat

Gateways 5-0 and finished the group fixtures with a thrilling last game against The Grammar School at Leeds,

drawing 0-0.

Having not conceded a goal in their group games they went through to the play offs to face the winners of

Group 2, Wakefield Girls’ High School. They narrowly lost 2-1 to miss out on a place in the final!

In the 3rd/4th place play off they beat Silcoates 3-0 to finish 3rd overall in the whole tournament behind

Wakefield Girls’ High School and The Grammar School at Leeds.

Well done girls, a fantastic achievement!

Spanish Exchange

The Spanish exchange students now have their partners and are getting to know one another prior to their

visit in February. Some very lucky students already know that they will be going to see Real Madrid play in the

Bernabeu Stadium while they are in Madrid. How lucky are they?!

The Hour of Code is coming!

Our world is surrounded by technology. Information, commerce, communication and entertainment all rely on computers. But only a tiny fraction of us learn computer science, the basics of how computers

work, or how to create software, apps, or websites. This year, to celebrate Computer Science Education

Week (Dec 9-15), we’re joining a massive campaign to prepare our population for the 21st century: the

Hour of Code. It’s a campaign that has an ambitious goal: to help 10 million students try one hour of

computer science. See http://hourofcode.org/ for details. Are you ready to face the challenge IGS?

Coming to your ICT and Computer Science lessons soon…

The 2013 theme for Human Rights Day is ‘20 Years Working for Your Rights’. The UN General Assembly

proclaimed December 10th as Human Rights Day in 1950, to bring attention to the Universal Declaration of

Human Rights as the common standard of achievement for all nations. The Universal Declaration of Human

Rights is proclaimed as a "common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations", towards which

individuals and societies should "strive by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their

universal and effective recognition and observance". Although the Declaration with its broad range of political,

civil, social, cultural and economic rights is not a binding document, it inspired more than 60 human rights

instruments which together constitute an international standard of human rights. Today the general consent of

all United Nations Member States on the basic Human Rights laid down in the Declaration makes it even

stronger and emphasizes the relevance of Human Rights in our daily lives.
