Events & Activities... When Karl Benz used his skills as a bicycle mechanic to install a rear engine of his own design in a three-wheeled buggy more than 125 years ago, the age of the automobile was born. German patent number 37435 was issued for the Benz Patent Motorwagen, the world’s first car.

Karl Benz also patented the first motorcycle in 1886/7. It was made of wood with a gasoline engine. It didn’t work very well and Benz went on to pursue four wheel automation rather than two.

Unknown to Benz, at the same time, in a village not too far away from the Benz shop, Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler with chief mechanic William Maybach, was also putting his automobile invention on a German roadway. It was much more of a conventional automobile with four wheels and a four-stroke motor.

The world’s first and second automobiles, along with the first motorcycle, are among the ground transportation displays in the Deutsches Museum, a half-hour walk from downtown Munich.

Located just beyond the famous Oktoberfest grounds and next to a wonderful beer garden, three massive display buildings with a fourth under construction house this unique collection tracing the history of

motorized land transportation. A massive 1905 Mercedes Benz

touring car represents one of the earliest cars manufactured by the famous German car builder.

Following along with the history of the automobile is the 1908 Protos that came first in the original New York to Paris Race which saw six cars depart New York City on Feb. 12, 1908 to travel through the U.S, Germany, Italy and France.

and this German-built Protos was the first across the finish line. However, because it was penalized for being put on a rail car for part of the journey, the victory went to a Thomas Flyer.

The museum features a 1922 Mercedes racing car – the first to use a “compressor” or supercharger to boost the horsepower in the four-cylinder engine from 40 to 65. Driver Paul Daimler was able to reach speeds up to 130 kph.

an Alpha Romeo Gran Sport driven by famous Italian driver Tazio Nuvolari between 1929 and 1931.

The 1955 Mercedes Benz 300SLR displayed at the Deutsches Museum won numerous famous races, including the second running of the Mille Miglia. It could travel on race courses at speeds

of up to 196 kph. Tragically, an accident involving a

similar 300SLR several years later at LeMans killed 80 spectators and ended racing participation for Mercedes Benz.

At the opposite end of the racing spectrum as presented in 1955 is a Messerschmitt cabin scooter “micro

car” that set 25 world records during a 24-hour track test with a top speed of 138 kph.

The 1930s was a time of luxury and sportiness for German-built cars. A 1932 Mercedes Benz Super Sport was the world’s fastest luxury sedan at the time. Its 200 horsepower engine could push the massive open touring car at speeds of up to 175 kph.

The peak of luxury sport is on

display in the form of a 1939 Horch 853A sport cabriolet. This eight-cylinder leather-lined road car was top of the line.

Another example on display is a 1939 Ford special V8 convertible. This car looks very much like its American-built cousin from 1937 but the rest of the car is very unique.

One of the most unusual vehicles is a massive 1938 Adler luxury sedan that

had been converted during the war to use wood gas as fuel. Wood was put in a firebox which produced wood gas with charcoal. The wood gas was piped directly into the carburetor to run the engine at a time when gasoline was not available.

Munich is the home of BMW and a 1955 BMW 507 is on display. One of only 252 built in a two-year production run, this stunning V8-powered sports car could travel 220 kph.

Providing a stark contrast is a 1949 Volkswagen export edition. Sixty per cent of post war production of the “people’s car” was for export. This early model with its split back window and very utilitarian interior was among the early style of the car affectionately called the Beetle that was sold all over the world. When production finally ended in Mexico in 2003, a total of 22 million Beetles had been built.

Displays in the cavernous museum buildings include historic trains, trams, buses and even an alpine cable car with passenger compartments with different elevations reflecting the steep angle of travel.

And the age of group tours in Germany is reflected with the display of a remarkable 1959 Setra tour bus featuring comfortable seating and panoramic windows for sightseeing trips.

If you would like to explore the history of the automobile from 1885 to the present, the Deutsches Museum in Munich is a must see. Or visit www.deutsches-museum.de and click on the British flag for the English version of the web tour.

Two local car dealerships were winners in the 20th annual Commercial Building Awards competition.

Hosted by the Commercial Division of the Victoria Real Estate Board, the awards, held at the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort, recognized excellence in commercial construction and design within the Capital Regional District.

Campus Infiniti, at 3371 Oak St., took home an Excellence Award in the category of Commercial/Retail while Campus Acura at 3347 Oak St., earned

a Merit Award for the same category. For Campus Infiniti, the

“renovation and addition to a building devastated by fire in 2007 creates a modern building complementing the other two car dealerships in the area. The new curtain wall and composite aluminum panel showroom with aluminum rooftop louvers creates a new look for a tired building,” noted information form the awards.

In addition, the existing concrete block structure was transformed into service bays for Campus Acura and Campus Infiniti.

Competition judges, selected from Victoria’s business community, reviewed the overall exterior of each building or development project and how it fits into the surrounding

area, looking for projects that were sensitive to the environment, aesthetically pleasing and answered specific development needs in the community. Judging this year’s entries were Gregory Damant, of D’Ambrosio architecture + urbanism, Ken Kelly, General Manager of the Downtown Victoria Business Association, Michael Martyn, Vice-President and partner of D.R. Coell & Associates, and commercial realtors Grant Evans, from Colliers International, Griffin Lewis, from DTZ Barnicke Victoria Ltd., and Peter Tanner, from Firm Management Corporation.

To be eligible, all projects had to have been completed between June 1, 2010 and May 31, 2011.

Driver of the Week:

The opportunity to fulfill a dream is priceless, and for Rod Jiang, of the local Little Thai Place restaurants, that dream was his 2009 Porsche Carrera.

“This is one of my dream cars,” Jiang says, pointing to the classic look and fun feel of the familiar Carrera design.

“Classy, well-designed and fun to drive,” it’s no surprise that Jiang’s favourite feature is quite simply the “driving experience and cool look of the car itself.”

And down the road? Jiang wouldn’t mind adding a different Porsche or perhaps other performance cars to his garage!

Ferrari world premiere for the Bologna Motor ShowMEtRolanD MEDia

CaRguiDE MagazinE

The 36th edition of the Bologna Motor Show provided the venue for the unveiling of an evolution of the extreme, non-homologated sports berlinetta, the Ferrari 599XX.

Ferrari has introduced a package of performance-enhancing technical features available to clients participating in the track-based research and development program for the 2012-2013 seasons.

Already the fruit of the very finest Ferrari road car and Formula 1-derived technology, the 599XX now features improved chassis dynamics thanks to an active aerodynamic package integrated with the vehicles’ electronic control systems, and the adoption of new Pirelli tires.

The car is also more powerful than

before and weighs 35 kg less. The key to the aero package is

the active rear wing design which represents a new aerodynamic concept called “opening gap.”

The wing features two flaps, with profiles similar to those used in Formula 1, which rotate electronically to adjust the downforce between the front and rear axles in relation to vehicle speed and the manoeuvre being effected.

The result of this concept is better performance in cornering.

The 599XX active rear wing is actuated automatically according to specific parameters which are integrated with the car’s other control functions (ESP, ABS, SCM and F1-Trac).

As a result of this integration, all the electronic controls have been suitably recalibrated. The racetrack oriented Ferrari 599XX now features an active rear wing.

Winterizing your vehicle can save cold cashMEtRolanD MEDia

CaRguiDE MagazinE

The last thing any driver needs is a vehicle that breaks down in cold, harsh winter weather.

Winterizing your vehicle should be a top priority, saving you from the inconvenience of being out in the cold and with the unexpected expense of emergency repairs, according to Be Car Care Aware.

Be Car Care Aware recommends the following steps for winterizing your vehicle:

• Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. As a general rule of thumb, this should be done every two years.

• Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly. Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months.

• Have the battery and charging system checked for optimum performance. Cold weather is hard on batteries.

• Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider

special tires designed to grip slick roads. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly.

• Be diligent about changing the oil and filter at recommended intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble

in winter. Consider changing to a “winter weight” oil if you live in a cold climate. Have your technician check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.

• If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done before winter sets in. Winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling.

• Have the brakes checked. The braking system is the vehicle’s most important safety item.

• Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed.

• Check to see that exterior and interior lights work and that headlights are properly aimed.

• Check the tire pressure of the spare in the trunk and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snowbrush, jumper cables, flashlight, flares, blanket, extra clothes, candles/matches, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication.

Be prepared for winter driving by checking tires, battery, fluids and other essentials.

Subaru unveiled the production version of its highly anticipated BRZ sports coupe at the recent Tokyo Motor Show.

With 200 hp and 151 lb/ft maximum torque in a car weighing just 1,220kg, the BRZ has been designed for maximum – and accessible – driving enjoyment.

The result of a Subaru-led joint-engineering venture with Toyota, the BRZ delivers a sensational and engaging driving experience, thanks in large part to an engineering and development program that focused on achieving the lowest possible centre of gravity.

The low-slung, naturally aspirated

engine allows for a low and wide stance: 1,300mm tall and 1,775mm wide. However, the 2+2 sports car still offers ample luggage space, ensuring it is adept as a weekend touring companion and as an enthralling daily driver.

The transmission was engineered for exceptional gearshift feel and response. The six-speed manual features a short-stroke gear lever, which is optimized in rigidity, shift accuracy and weight. The six-speed automatic transmission has a “Sports” mode for immediate shift response.

Its “Manual” mode allows the driver to use the steering wheel-mounted paddles and features a downshift “throttle blipping” system to ensure the BRZ delivers maximum driver satisfaction.

Cadillac continues development of all-new ATSHand-picked engineers tasked to create agile sport sedan

MEtRolanD MEDiaCaRguiDE MagazinE

Engineers working on the all-new Cadillac ATS, which begins production in 2012, were handpicked based on their roles in developing other top Cadillacs – and how well they can drive and evaluate cars on grueling test tracks.

Their shared goal: Create a new compact sport sedan challenging the best cars in that category.

Most of the engineers on the team also developed Cadillac’s CTS and V-Series high-performance models, and have the highest level of training as test drivers. Some are certified drivers on Germany’s famed Nurburgring test track.

The ATS will be unveiled in 2012 and will be built at the Lansing Grand River plant in Lansing, Mich., alongside the CTS Coupe, Sedan and Sport Wagon family.

A series of videos featuring highlights of the car’s development are available on the Cadillac YouTube page and on the Cadillac website.

Driving simulators: The only way to teach proper techniques to new driversOver the past 40 years, most driver

training programs have not changed. They consist of lecture-style theory and driving lessons in the car.

Except for DriveWise! Here in Victoria, DriveWise is the

largest driving school teaching students more than how to pass their road test; DriveWise teaches life-saving skills – in class, on driving simulators and then in the DriveWise car with a qualified driving instructor.

“We have found our students to be better prepared for the reality of driving by using our driving

simulators,” says Kate Wells, Manager of DriveWise. “Students are engaged, focused and learning skills they can properly put into use on the roads in Victoria because they learn so much on the simulators.”

Basic skills are introduced on the simulators, such as how to do proper left and right hand turns at intersections, lane changes and shoulder checks, all the way up to advanced maneuvers such as emergency braking, brake-and-avoid driving techniques, and how to avoid a head-on crash. All are taught within the DriveWise course as a part of the

classroom program. “We used to offer the Premium

Branded Driving Program for over 34 years in Victoria, but switched to the DriveWise program in 2008 because we felt we needed to utilize driving simulators to properly teach our students,” Wells says. “Families that had taken our courses previously noticed a significant difference in our new program and are thrilled!”

DriveWise is busy preparing for Christmas classes, coming up Dec. 20 and 28 in Victoria and the Westshore. Students will be able to learn “hands-

on” about the consequences of impaired driving or driving while texting, with the DriveWise Driving Simulators as part of the ICBC-approved curriculum.

“We are very proud of our course and exceptional road test pass rate because of the help from the driving simulators. New drivers need to learn the proper, safe driving techniques and the simulators are a huge asset to our program for them,” Wells says.

For more information about DriveWise programs or to register a new driver for a coming course, visit www.drivewisebc.com

Green Initiative

By JEnnifER BlythBlaCK PREss

Capital Region drivers in the market for a new vehicle can now save a little extra money in their efforts to go green.

Nine local new car dealerships are participating in the $7.5 million Clean Energy Vehicle Point of Sale Incentive Program, an initiative of the BC Ministry of Environment, LiveSmart BC in partnership with the New Car Dealers Association of BC.

Under the program, which launched Dec. 1, consumers across B.C. will receive up to $5,000 off the pre-tax price of purchasing or leasing a qualifying new battery electric, fuel cell, plug-in hybrid electric or compressed natural gas vehicle. The program aims to encourage and accelerate the sale of clean energy vehicles and technology innovation within B.C.

Locally, participating dealers include:

• Campus Honda • Campus Nissan • Glenoak Ford Sales (Douglas

Street & Island Highway locations) • Jenner Chevrolet Buick GMC • Metro Lexus Toyota • Suburban Motors • Three Point Motors • Victoria Mitsubishi • Wheaton Chevrolet Buick Cadillac

GMC

To learn more about the eligible vehicles and the incentive program, consumers can visit a new website, www.CEVforBC.ca, hosted by the New Car Dealers Association.

“This is a very exciting time for new car dealers in B.C.,” association president and CEO Blair Qualey said. “Manufacturers have been investing in an array of new technologies over the

past number of years, including Clean Energy Vehicle Technology. We’re proud to be making this new technology available to B.C. consumers, while at the same time making a significant contribution to the greening of the provincial economy and encouraging manufacturers to choose B.C. when developing and deploying new clean energy technology.”

Vehicles currently qualifying under the CEV Incentive Program include the Chevrolet Volt, Mitsubishi iMiev, Nissan Leaf, Smart Fortwo, Ford Focus Electric, and Toyota Plug In Prius. Also included are fuel cell technology models such as the Mercedes-Benz B-class F-cell and Compressed Natural Gas models such as the Honda GX, recently awarded the 2012 Green Car of the Year title by Green Car Journal.

Vehicles qualifying for the rebate are anticipated to cost as little as $300 per

year in hydro compared to upwards of $1,500 per year to fuel a gas-powered car.

For more information visit www.newcardealers.ca or www.cevforbc.ca

Vehicle-Specific Repair Manuals – Ignoring preventive maintenance and/or failing to make minor car repairs today could mean thousands of dollars in auto repair bills tomorrow. Haynes and Chilton Repair Manuals are vehicle specific, available for most makes and models, and are the choice of AutoMD.com mechanics. At a little less than $30 each, the manuals provide an in-depth look at specific areas of auto repair and include step-by-step procedures, enhanced photos, troubleshooting guides, electrical diagrams and valuable short cuts.

Air Compressor – Tire maintenance is critical to a smooth and safe vehicle ride and proper maintenance starts with keeping all four tires properly inflated. Properly inflated tires should last longer, and are less likely to sustain significant damage from potholes and other road hazards. A portable air compressor makes it easy to inflate tires at home or on the road. As a bonus, some of these portable air compressors include a 12-volt battery pack for jumpstarting the car in the case of a dead battery. Portable air compressors retail from $50 to $100.

Waterless Wash and Wax Kits – As a vehicle ages, the paint/finish becomes more vulnerable to oxidation, scratches, chipping and eventually rust. Regular washing and waxing helps stave off this aging process. Waterless wash and wax kits are a convenient option that comes with everything car owners need to keep their cars clean without turning on a water hose,

including cleaning solution, special towels and wax. These waterless wash and wax kits can cost from $20 to more than $100, depending on the size and contents of the kit. And, don’t neglect the car’s interior. Products to help clean and protect the dashboard, steering wheel, windows, even leather upholstery, make excellent stocking stuffers.

Tire Gauge – Keeping tires and wheels aligned, balanced and properly inflated improves vehicle performance and increases tire life. Tire pressure should be checked monthly with a quality digital or pencil-type pressure gauge.

Digital gauges, which can range from $10 to $30, are usually more accurate, but a quality pencil-type

gauge, which retails for $5 to $10, can work just as well.

A New Set of Floor Mats – Easy to clean and available in a wide range of colours and styles, floor mats can spruce up the look of a car’s interior while also protecting its carpeting. A set of floor mats can range from $30 to $70 depending on the vehicle, and how many floor mats are included. Customized floor mats are also available and allow car owners to specify colour, design, and can even include specialized embroidery. Customized floor mats can cost hundreds of dollars, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. To protect your new floor mats, inexpensive liners are also available, typically made of rubber and depending on the size and number in each set, costing from $20 to $50.

Porsche Canada has announced the 2012 schedule for the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada series, North America’s fastest growing single-make racing series.

The GT3 Cup Challenge Canada has grown from six to nine races and added two new venues.

The five-event, nine-race Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada season kicks off at the annual Victoria Day SpeedFest at Mosport International Raceway in May.

Drivers in the series’ Platinum and Gold Cup are then invited to join their American counterparts at the prestigious Formula One Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal Circuit

Gilles Villeneuve, followed by a new venue for the series – the Summer Festival at historic Circuit Mont-Tremblant.

The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada will once again compete alongside the U.S. GT3 series at Mosport International Raceway at the Mobil 1 Presents the Grand Prix of Mosport, part of the American Le Mans Series powered by Tequila Patrón season.

The series will finish at the first venue the series visited in their inaugural season, Calabogie Motorsports Park.

Additional information, including competitor regulations and entry forms, will be available shortly at www.imsaracing.net.
