Th e Morgan Jayne Project will have a special volunteer at this year’s Red Eye Memorial slow pitch tournament. Valerie Nelson, the woman who operates Familias Salu-dables in Roatan and adminis-ters the Morgan Jayne Project on the ground will be at the tournament. “I am very excited and we want to make sure she meets as many people as she can,” said Fred Makowecki, founder of the Morgan Jayne Project. “You have to understand we (in Drumheller) have done so much to help the people of Roatan, she wants to be able to talk and thank as many people as she can.” Th e Morgan Jayne Project turned fi ve this summer. In that time, it has contributed to allowing children to live in the poverty-stricken country, by minimizing the spread of AIDS from mother to child through breast milk. “Last year there was zero mother-child transmission, that was us. Th ere were other

people involved but 90 per cent of it was this community saving those kids…we should

be proud of it.” Nelson will be at the tourna-ment on Saturday and possibly Sunday. Makowecki said they are also planning a presenta-tion from Nelson on Monday evening at 7 p.m. at the new

Elim Pentecostal Church in the former Central School. She is also planning presen-tations for the Rotary Club and students at St. Anthony’s School. Despite the eff orts of the community however, Ma-kowecki says the global eco-nomic situation is making it tough on the program. “Last month her family went without power so there was formula in the shelter for the babies,” said Makowecki. “You pat yourself on the shoulders and dust yourself off and think you are all done, but it never ends.” He said the BACtoBAC program has helped the pro-gram with a steady stream of income, and Drumheller resi-dents remain committed. Th is year’s Red Eye Memori-al Tournament is on the week-end of September 9-11. Th is tournament splits the funds raised between the Morgan Jayne Project and the Chris Bolin Memorial Fund. Makowecki said they are still looking for volunteers for the event to staff the conces-sion at the tournament. He says to stop by Image Crafters to volunteer. He also has post-ed a schedule on his Facebook page.

Already 580 are registered, and more are expected for the second annual Dinosaur Half this Sunday. In its second year, the event is proving to be wildly suc-cessful locally, throughout Al-berta, B.C., Saskatchewan and even Nova Scotia. Organizers were busy this week marking the course and making last minute prepara-tions. And while it might be last minute, there is still time to register for the races. Orga-nizer Colin Kloot says regis-tration will be taken Friday and Saturday at the Running Room in Calgary, and on Sun-day morning at Midland Hall for the 5K, 10K or half mara-thon. Racers who are already reg-istered can pick up their bibs and packages at the Sports Room Source for Sports on Friday and Saturday, or at Midland Hall on Sunday morning. Gear check for the half mar-athon takes place at 7 a.m., and 8 a.m. for the shorter distances. Th e half marathon starts at 9 a.m. at the Little Church. However, for those walking, or who anticipate

taking longer than 3.5 hours to fi nish the course, there is an 8 a.m. start. Th e 5K and 10K runs start at 9:30 a.m. at the Royal Tyrrell Museum. All races conclude at the museum where there will be race day festivities and exhib-its. Because of the overwhelm-ing response to the event, organizers have made some logistical arrangements to make the day run smoothly. With the possibility of nearly 600 competitors, there is sim-ply not enough parking to accommodate all at the Tyr-rell Museum. Organizers ask racers to car pool if possible. Th ere will also be parking at the Midland Community Hall, and three shuttle buses have been arranged to transport runners to the race. Th e 10K race will also come through the community of Midland. Th ere is a turn-around point on the west side of Midland Hall. Because the community of Midland will be a busy place race day, Kloot would like to thank residents in advance for their patience during the event and understands that parking may be heavy and could in-convenience residents.

Drumheller’s new community facility is moving along, still aim-ing for a November 15 opening. Th e multi-use complex is al-most totally closed in and the glass has been installed. Inside, the welding on the run-ning track continues, as well as hvac ductwork and spray on in-sulation work. Brickwork and installation of washrooms and showers in the change rooms for the fi eldhouse is also underway. As well, the public can now have a look at what the exterior covering of the building will look like as workers are installing the exterior covering.

Th e cladding is a fi re resistant material and can be seen in vari-ous shades of gray from the east-ern side of the building where workers have begun the work. Th e colour selection was cho-sen over a tan color in a vote held by facility committees, as well as a website survey held earlier this year. Lorne Peters, site superinten-dent for general contractor Daw-son Wallace Construction of Cal-gary, told inSide Drumheller that over 80 sub-trades, both large and small, are involved in the project. “We (Dawson Wallace) have had excellent co-operation from local suppliers who are work-ing with us as a team”, Mr. Peters said.

Th is was borne out by Rod Knelsen from LPR Concrete of Drumheller. Mr. Knelsen told inSide Drumheller earlier that working with Dawson Wallace was a good experience and they are a good company to work with on the project. Occupancy by mid-November is still the target, but not all areas of the complex will be fully func-tional at that time. Two key staff members in-volved in the operation of the complex are working to ensure programs and functions are in place by opening. Guy Latour has been hired as the business manager, and Heather Little will be heading up the marketing and events for the facility.

The Badlands Community Facility is aiming at a November 15 completion date and work is continuing at a brisk pace.

Stepping in the door at the Drumheller Outreach School, located on Centre Street, you’ll fi nd books and students. Th e school, operated by Golden Hills School Divi-sion, off ers alternative edu-cation for adults and stu-dents to upgrade or obtain credits to further their edu-cation. Th e Outreach School pro-vides a place, not only for education, but for support and individual guidance to help students achieve their goals. Th e school off ers in-teraction with other stu-dents with similar life expe-riences. When a student fi rst ar-rives to the centre, the fi rst

process is an individual as-sessment with a teacher to fi nd out what the needs and goals of the student are in order to achieve success through the centre. “Fostering a life plan, it's not just about high school education, but life skills as well,” said Jen Paulger, a teacher for the Outreach School. Th e benefi t for students enrolled in the program is the personal academic edu-cation that allows the stu-dent to work at their own pace with fl exible hours. Paulger told inSide Drum-heller, “Some students will come to school in the morn-ing at 8 a.m. till lunch then work in the afternoon.” In some cases work expe-rience maybe be considered

for credit towards educa-tion. Th e Alberta Goverment off ers grants for adult stu-dents over the age of 21 that will help them further their academic education. For mothers, there is a baby area at the centre so it makes it easier for them to further their education. Th ere were 12 students enrolled on the fi rst day, and there is no limit of space to accommodate fu-ture students. Th e calendar year for the Outreach School is the same as other Golden Hills School Division Schools but hours of operation are mornings from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. On September 16 the Outreach School will be holding an open house from 9 a.m. to noon and everyone is welcome to at-tend.

been charged with possession of marijuana, pos-session of marijuana for the purpose of traffi cking and possession of proceeds of crime, and Amber Larocke, 19, of Calgary, has been charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of traf-fi cking, and possession of marijuana. Depending on the outcome in the courts, the Jaguar will either be returned or forfeited to the Crown for disposal.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water.

About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossil-ized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area.

The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district.

It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Today, the Town of Drumheller relies on agriculture, gov-ernment services, oil and gas, and tourism for its economic prosperity.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water.

About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossil-ized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area.

The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district.

It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Today, the Town of Drumheller relies on agriculture, gov-ernment services, oil and gas, and tourism for its economic prosperity.

Performers shine at expo

Hundreds came out to this fall’s Sports, Recreation and Arts Expo last Wednesday evening. Community groups with all sort of activities, geared for all sorts of ages, were at the fair to provide families with information on the pro-grams they offer. Attendees were also treated to some great performances, including a patriotic tap dancing per-formance to “Canadian, Please.”

Th ey say every journey begins with a single step. For Karen Andrew, each step became faster and faster, and this weekend she will be running in the 10K race at the Dinosaur Half. In fact, it has become a family aff air. Her daughter Chelsea An-drew Latvala will be running with her and, if her husband Mark is not harvesting he’ll be running alongside too. “It kind of gets in your blood,” said Karen. Karen’s journey began in about 2003 when she took up running. Earlier, she had been diagnosed with severe rheumatoid arthritis to the point she couldn’t get out of bed. Her daughter completed the Dublin Marathon for Joints in Motion, in support of her mother and an uncle with arthritis. “My husband and I went as part of the cheer team… it was an

amazing thing to see,” said Karen. Mark began running right away. When Karen began to ef-fectively manage her arthritis with medication, she too began to run. With running you start slowly, and that is what Karen did. She kept at it. Along the way, she shed 90 pounds. Her running and life-style change has also helped with her arthritis. “When I see the rheumatolo-gist, he says just keep on moving, which is easy to do when you are feeling well. It is not so easy when you can’t put your own clothes on,” she said. She began to compete in runs upwards of 10K, and then last year she completed her longest race yet, the Dinosaur Half. “Th at was my very proudest moment, I have to say that,” said Karen. She was cheered along by fami-ly, who didn’t just watch her pass, but drove out in the fi elds and by

the airport to support her on her journey. Her husband Mark did not run in the half last year be-cause of an injury that required a pin being placed in his leg. He has since worked his way back into running shape. She truly feels running has changed her family’s life. “I feel like a whole diff erent person, and if we hadn’t had gone to Dublin with our daughter and had that whole beautiful experi-ence, neither one of us would be running,” she said. “I thought when we went there all of these people would be really fi t, but there were fat people, old people, skinny people, poor people, rich people, and you don’t expect to see that. I think then you realize that you can do it.” Her journey continues this Sunday at the Dinosaur Half. “I really think running has changed our lives because you get it in your blood and you just can’t let it go.”
