Dear family,
I just want to
invite you to participate in this beautiful time of advent , with a
patient and joyful spirit to the coming of Christ on Christmas. Celebrating the feasts of Mary
the Immaculate Conception, which is our patron, and the
Virgin of Guadalupe; it is a great opportunity to acknowledge
and ask for her intercession to celebrate with a new spirit of
Christmas; a spirit of thanksgiv-ing to God for his coming. I in-vite you, also, to participate at
the posadas, to help us celebrate and learn more about Jesus.
I CAN WAIT
Today Saint James urges us to be patient, “because the coming of the Lord is at hand” (James 5:8). “Being patient” means enduring without com-plaint. The farmer must wait for the sun, rain, and good earth to do their work, while the farmer weeds, fertilizes, and keeps away pests. Thus it is in Advent: God is sending us a savior, but we must prepare for his coming. Yet children are born impatient. Every-one has seen toddlers “melt down” when they have to wait. Advent is four weeks—a long time for children. Many families use Advent calendars and Bible stories to focus their children on the unfolding of this season. They go to Advent penance services and choose gifts for people named on the parish giving tree. They light the Advent wreath before meals and pray together. The time a family spends savoring God’s good time helps children see the importance of waiting, watch-ing, and learning.
THE LOOK OF LOVE What does love look like? It has feet to go to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of others. —St. Augustine
JUSTICE AND OBEDIENCE Justice is the insurance we
have on our lives, and obedience is the premium we pay for it.
—William Penn
A SEASON OF HOPE
Today we can bask in the imagery that the Mass readings offer us. In particular, Isaiah’s vision of a parched land that blooms with abundant flow-ers holds a message for each of us. Too often we are just like that parched land. We can allow ourselves to be-come absorbed in the waves of con-sumerism that grip so many. We look for fulfillment in the things that mon-ey can buy. Unfortunately, this leaves us like parched land, thirsting for something that money can’t buy. This holy season has much to offer to quench our thirsts. In a word, this sea-son offers hope. We are told that those who are ransomed by God will know joy and gladness. For them, sorrow and mourning will be no more. Let us place our hope in these promises.

PUEDO ESPERAR

Ven, Señor, a salvarnos, ven a dar libertad.
—Pedro Rubalcava, © 1994, World Library Publica-tions
VIGILANDO Y ESPERANDO
