Selecting the right gift for a senior can be a challenge. Perhaps they say they have “everything they need,” or lack space for many extras.

So, what to get?“Our residents always

enjoy nice chocolates and with the increasing price of chocolate this is even more valuable,” says Lynn Larsen, general manager or the local seniors’ residence, Amica at Douglas House. Through

ested in the social aspect of our new programming, such as the knitting group, bead-ing group, movie nights, board game events, Bingo nights...grief counselling, etc. Donations to our pro-grams are always appreci-ated, but also the gift of time to help with Bingo calling, or helping people read or write letters home, etc.”

In addition to warm clothing, slippers and boots, grocery and meal cards, special holiday food and treats are often welcome, says Alan Rycroft, Com-munity Relations, Victoria Cool Aid Society. Transpor-tation is also a key issue for seniors, so the gift of a bus pass or taxi card can support independence and mobility.

Cool Aid accepts dona-tions for people in need, but those wanting to purchase a personalized gift are encouraged visit Homeless Partners at www.homeless-partners.com

Gifts that consider seniors’ special needs are also most appreciated.

Micky Fleming, from Cher-ish Living in the West Shore, suggests electric foot warm-ers, sweater vests, large print books and magnifying glasses can be much ap-preciated, along with home-made cookies and crafts hand-made by grandkids.

For a splurge, a gift like an iPad – along with the gift or your time to help them get up and running with it – can al-low seniors to exercise their mind and stay connected. Be sure to show them how to Skype!

While children are un-derstandably the focus of many social programs at the holidays, remembering older adults – especially those on a limited income – is also important. “We are de nitely seeing more seniors coming in to Our Place,” says Grant McKenzie, the organization’s

director of communica-tions. “One of the draws, of course, is our free meals program, but we are also seeing those who are inter-

If you plan to enjoy a little “holiday cheer” this season, the message from local police is clear: Plan ahead to get home safely.

Victoria and Saanich police departments, along with the Capital Regional District Road Safety Unit, are out in force to ‘Light up the Island’ – this year’s impaired driving enforcement campaign, aimed at targeting impaired and distracted drivers across Vancouver Island.

The campaign, from the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police Traf c Safety Committee, includes all police agencies on Vancou-ver Island with check stops throughout.

Light up the Island coincides with the start of the holiday season ICBC CounterAttack, the seasonal campaign running through-out the holiday.

“Impaired and distracted driving are the leading causes of preventable injury

and deadly collisions on BC’s roadways,” said Sgt. Ron Cronk, Sergeant in charge of VicPD’s Traf c Section.

“Our of cers are committed to enforcing the laws against impaired and distracted driving, but we need you to do your part as well. Put down that phone, plan your safe ride home and save a life.”

While attitudes toward drinking and driving have changed considerably over the years, an average of 86 lives are still lost every year in B.C., the province noted in launching this year’s CounterAttack campaign, a joint effort between the

province, ICBC and local police.“Police of cers across B.C. will be working hard to keep

impaired drivers off our roads this December,” said Chief Neil Dubord, Chair of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Po-lice Traf c Safety Committee.

“The hardest part of a police of cer’s job is telling a fam-ily they’ve lost a loved one – a loss that could have been avoided. We can all help prevent these crashes by always planning a safe ride home.”
