Pastor’s 2 Cents From: Fr. Jim DeBruycker
May today there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant
to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts
that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be confident,
knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones and allow your soul the
freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.
This is the prayer our SJA Liturgy Committee chose as a meditation for Advent. It is attributed
to St. Teresa of Avila, a sixteenth century Spanish saint known for her religious zeal and con-
templations on prayer. She said, “Contemplative prayer in my opinion is nothing else than a
close sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with him who we
know loves us.” The following prayer which we know as a song at SJA is also attributed to her:
Christ has no body but yours; no hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes with
which he looks with compassion on this world, yours are the feet with which he walks to do
good, yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are
the feet, yours are the eyes; you are his body. Christ has no body now but yours, No hands, no
feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes with which he looks with compassion on this world.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.
We thought this prayer appropriate because we need it. Watching the craziness of the world
around us, we can lose hope. Teresa, who spent much of her life in trouble with the Church as
she was trying to do the right thing, centered herself on the knowledge that if with humility she
trusted that in God’s constant presence, good would prevail. She had incredible faith, humility
and patience.
She was not a pushover and realized no situation or person could stop her from doing good
wherever she was. In other words, she was always in the right place when she was doing
God’s will - Christ has no body now but yours. The most famous representation of her is the
Bernini sculpture, Teresa in Ecstasy, in which that oneness with God is so famously presented.
Advent begins with an apocalyptic message of the end which we can resonate with. Wars,
global warming, insane politics...but it always ends with a baby in a manger. I often write about
Sebastian Moore’s reflection that the crucified Christ is no stranger. Meditating on the cross
we see ourselves as both crucified and crucifier. We should also meditate on the newborn
baby and see ourselves as newly born of fragility and hope.
Christ has no body but yours; no hands, no feet on earth but yours.
Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world.
Have a blessed Advent.

In This Season of Gratitude: Recently, our SJA ISAIAH core
team celebrated outreach to tens of thousands of fellow Minneso-
tans before the midterm elections through calls, texts and door
knocking - urging people to vote not from fear, but from faith in
human dignity and the common good. ISAIAH is an interfaith
collective of more than 100 metro area congregations working
for racial and economic justice and SJAers were prominent in
the effort to engage people in civic participation. SJAer Charlie
Anhut said, "I was not looking forward to phonebanking, but
before each call, I would line up photos of my four grandchildren
and say 'I'm doing this for you." Then, through eight phonebanking
shifts, Charlie would make the next call for his grandchildren's
future and for our shared future. Thank you Charlie, and thanks to
all who continue to do this sacred work, knowing that we may not
see all our efforts come to fruition in our lifetime, but that every call
and conversation matters. And we are grateful to walk together on
this journey!
Food Shelf Donations Are Needed: You are encouraged to bring
non-perishable food items with you when you come to Mass on
Sunday and place them in our food shelf bins, located in the
entrances to our Church and Parish Center. Your food offerings
are donated to the Foodshelf at Sabathani Community Center
each week. Thank you for your willingness to help those in need.

you can join us in letting families and children in immigration
