As we embark on 2012 it is natural to look for change. As we all know in business (and life) nothing ever stays the same,
but isn’t that what makes our stories so interesting? Let’s make this year, this chapter of our lives, an opportunity for growth in our businesses and within ourselves.
Over the past few years, the story of our economy has served up some challenges and tried to change our happy endings. There have been hurdles to jump, detours to avoid and road blocks that made us stop and think. However, through it all, we have learned to count on each other and to use the resources around us, and
as a result, we are able to continue on and grow stronger.
The Lee’s Summit Chamber is a great resource and has played a big role in my story, and I invite you to let it do the same for your business. Our Chamber continues to adapt and implement new programs to better serve our members. There are countless opportunities for you to market your business and build relationships with all types of community-minded individuals like yourself. The Chamber even works on your behalf if you are unable to attend events through marketing, governmental relations and much more.
It is my honor and privilege to serve as the 2012 Chair of the Board. Myself, along with the Board of Directors, chamber staff, committee chairs and countless volunteers, are all committed to help create opportunities to help your business to grow.

Rosalie Newkirk with HSMC Companies Named Woman to WatchCongratulations to Rosalie Newkirk, CPA, CFP®, with HSMC Companies who received the Missouri Society of CPAs Women to Watch Award- Experienced Leaders category presented at the Missouri Society of CPAs fall meeting in early November.

Carolyn Wheeler Named Director of Sales of the Year for Staybridge Suites Brand WorldwideCarolyn Wheeler of Staybridge Suites Kansas City - Independence was selected as “Best of the Best” from among 199 Sales Managers to receive the
Director of Sales of the Year Award
for Staybridge Suites. The award was presented by the Staybridge Suites Brand Team at the 2011 IHG Americas Investors & Leadership Conference held at The Venetian/The Palazzo InterContinental Alliance Resorts in Las Vegas in October.
“Carolyn Wheeler is a very dedicated sales professional, an enormous part of our team’s success,” said Lindsay
Chapman, General Manager. “Since opening our hotel in 2009, Carolyn has been dedicated to bringing new business to our hotel and the City of Independence. She has developed strong relationships with our clients and the members of our business community. I am very proud to have her as part of our award-winning team.”
Congratulations to Lee's Summit Medical Center, winner of the 2011 Lee's Summit Ethics in Business award. This award was presented during the November Chamber Luncheon.
Lee’s Summit Medical Center demonstrated corporate social responsibility through its recent involvement in a Drug Take Day and the Heart of the Summit Walk/Run. LSMC received high points from the three-part application which included management responses, employee evaluations and client referrals.

Missouri is one of 20 states which has an outstanding loan due to the Federal Government dating back to at least 2009. Because of this, Missouri businesses will be subject to a .3 percent tax impound per employee by the end of this year. Paycor Payroll Services will be handling the payment for its clients, however, if you’re using an off-the-shelf software to handle your payroll, this is a matter that will require your attention. Businesses who fail to comply will be subject to penalties on top of the tax owed.
Additionally, earlier this year, there was a reduction in FUTA reimbursement for all businesses. This too needs to be addressed and adjusted accordingly. Unless you have done something to address this, chances, are the program you’re using may not have made the adjustment.
