THE SYMBOL OF LIGHT
When we usher in Shabbat every week, we begin by kindling candles. In traditional homes, this moment is the last time light is actively brought in until the glow from the Havdalah candle on Saturday Night. The ancient Temple included an Eternal Light. Most modern synagogues (including ours) burn an eternal light as it sits perched over the Ark and above the congregation. And on Chanukah, the only true miracle described is connected to light, too.
December and January are plagued by being the darkest months of the calendar. Chanukah is in the winter month of Kislev, and the special lights of Chanukah give a glow each of the eight nights in a way that brightens the gloom of those short winter days.
It is my belief that we find Chanukah in our calendar because of the need for light. This is a very practical application for the holiday—and most of our celebrations have a pragmatic purpose. But holidays also have a spiritual element.
Light is a symbol of God’s presence. We light Shabbat Candles and bring God into the moment so hallowed by our tradition. We hang our nehr tamid Eternal Light) in our sanctuary as a way of symbolizing God’s omnipresence. It is not that God is in the light—but that we are reminded of God’s role as creator. The candles in the Chanukiyah (the menorah used for Chanukah) can serve such a purpose, too.
Chanukah is the celebration of the victory by the Maccabees over those who defiled the ancient Temple in Jerusalem. The story is devoid of a role for God. And while the mighty Judah and his warriors were inspired by their faith and serving God, Adonai does not command them to their task, nor is God quoted in the story. It is the celebration of a war triumph. It is possible that the Festival of Sukkot was celebrated during the eight-day rededication of the Temple (since the Temple was unavailable to them earlier in the fall when Sukkot was intended to be commemorated). Some scholars think that the story of the oil lasting for eight-days was a way to bring God back into the story—thus providing a miracle—an act of God—in a story that otherwise has God silent. (Sorry, Virginia!)
The actual origin of that story is irrelevant—since the symbol of light is so profound in our tradition. Perhaps this year, as each candle is kindled, a family member can identify a place where God’s light is shining. Whether that is a literal statement, and the Shabbat candles or an Eternal Light is mentioned, or the light of kindness and compas-
sion found in the souls of the rescue workers during Hurricane Sandy, seeing the light is very meaningful if we are looking for God in its brightness.
May God’s light shine upon you and all who love you and give you peace!
Have a great Chanukah.
Sandford R. Kopnick, Rabbi
CANTOR YVON SHORE RETURNS FOR TWO SHABBAT SERVICES Cantor Yvon Shore, Director of Liturgical Arts at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion will present a program about Chanukah at Services on Friday, December 7, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. Can-tor Shore will join Rabbi Kopnick and Rabbinic
Intern Carolan Glatstein during the worship service, and then present a sermon in song about the Festival.
Cantor Shore will also be pres-ent on January 25 for Shabbat Shira. This Shabbat is named Shira in con-nection with the Torah portion from
Exodus also known as Miriam’s Song, or Song at the Sea. This Torah portion has its own cantillation and is written in a poetic style. This nickname has given us an opportunity to celebrate the music of our tradition.
Cantor Shore will present a sermon in song surrounding this theme. Both services begin at 7:30 p.m. and are made possible by the Robert Lanzit Adult Learning Fund.
MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS OFF TO DETROIT FOR WINTER RETREAT
Our Mitzvah Corps (7th and 8th Grade program) will travel to West Bloomfield, Michigan during Martin Luther King Jr., Day weekend. While in Detroit, the students will visit the Holocaust Museum on Orchard Lake Rd., one of the first Holocaust Museums in the country, and widely considered one of the finest regional museums of its kind. Students will spend time learning about the Holocaust, Jewish identity, and more. There will be visits to Temple Israel of West Bloomfield, among the largest Reform Congregations in the country, and an NBA game between the Detroit Pistons and the Boston Celtics. Students will be accompanied by Rabbi Kopnick, Rabbinic Intern Carolan Glatstein, and college students.

Tzedakah Update:
Don’t forget to send a bit of change or even a dol-lar to RS each week with your child. We collect tzedakah money throughout the year and our teachers talk about the importance of this basic Jewish value. Consider allowing your children to earn a bit of money and then bring some for tzedakah.
In response to the recent super storm on the east coast, we are donating tzedakah money collected in December to the Union of Reform Judaism’s relief fund to aid West End Temple in Neponsit, NY. West End Temple is a Reform congregation in the Rockaways section of Queens with a connection to Cincinnati. West End’s rabbi, Rabbi Marjorie Slome, is a native of Cincinnati and also a UC graduate. Emily Walsh (daughter of our administrator Wendy Walsh and Assistant Director of Education at B’nai Jeshurun on the Upper West Side of Manhattan) has been leading relief efforts where members of her congregation are helping Rabbi Slome and the West End Temple.
Here is a link to an article about West End Temple after the storm: http://tinyurl.com/b6o7xm7
Here is a map to show you where West End Temple is located.
Our wonderful teachers and madrichim have been creating meaningful learning experiences with your children. Here is a sampling of what is happening in all the classes:
PreK— weekly additions to the mitzvah tree, 7 days of Creation art, Shabbat mobiles and take home Havdalah bags Kindergarten- Jewish Show and Tell during which students bring something Jewish and meaningful from home to share with their classmates, arks to hold Consecration torahs, alef-bet yoga 1st grade—K’tonton (Jewish Tom Thumb) stories and dolls, kid-friendly 10 Commandments, and mitzvot 2nd grade- discussing and acting out the weekly torah portion, Jewish symbols and holidays 3rd grade—discovering and discussing what is most important about our Jewish holidays, learning the letters and sounds of the Hebrew alef-bet 4th grade—who were the Prophets and how do they relate to our own lives?, Hebrew reading and vo-cabulary 5th grade—studying Israel, planning and brainstorming a book detailing Jewish life cycle events, Hebrew reading and prayers from the Shabbat morning service 6th grade—American Jewish History, practicing reading fluency and vocabulary in Hebrew with prayers from the Shabbat morning service Valley Temple Mitzvah Corps (7th and 8th grades)—understanding our responsibility to those within our temple community and to others in the larger community

SAVE THE DATES...
The holidays are fast approaching! A great gift idea is a gift card - and you can get them through our Sisterhood! There are many vendors to choose from, and both the Temple and Sisterhood benefit by receiving a percentage of what is sold! (A reminder that IRS regulations require us to tell you this is not tax-deductible.) Thank you to Cindy Cronin for coordinating this!
And speaking of Chanukah, thank you Jessica Wagner for coordinating a successful Chai Life Chanukah card making event! On November 11, several Chai Life members made beautiful and creative Chanukah cards for the elderly, and I think all the kids had a blast!
We are looking for volunteers for gift wrapping December 24 at Barnes & Noble in Kenwood, Fields Ertel and Newport on the Levee locations. This is a fun fundraiser that also gives an opportunity to get to know fellow Temple members you may not have yet met! Anyone interested, please contact Jan Goldstein.
Women of Reform Judaism had their annual meeting this year in Detroit, MI. Our own Jan Goldstein & Jenny Broh attended, and found the experience uplifting & fulfilling. One topic that was discussed is the Fried Leadership Conference, which is January 25-27 at the Westin in Cincinnati. This is open to any women and includes workshops and training to improve leadership skills. Please contact Jan Goldstein for more information.
If you would like to give to a family that is being helped by Jewish Family Services this year, please contact Elizabeth Woosley. She will get you the information you need to give to someone less fortunate this holiday season.
Anyone interested in joining Sisterhood is welcome to attend any of our meetings - many friendships have developed as a result of Sisterhood, and it’s a great way to meet new people and have some “girl time”!
Upcoming Sisterhood dates are: December 9, January 13, February 3, March 10, April 21 & May 12. We will also meet on February 10 to bake Hamantaschen - YUM!
Looking forward to seeing you at some meetings!

MEN’S CLUB
The Men’s Club is back! The first meeting of the Men’s club was held on Tuesday October 23rd at Valley Temple. Pizza and soda were served. There was a great turnout from Temple members, 14 in all. Special thanks go out to President Sam Lobar, who organized the meeting, as well as who coordinated the pizza. Ivan Tamarkin was very helpful in providing previous Men’s club experience, of which we hope to build on, and Jeff Schlaeger did a great job of taking the notes.
During the meeting it was decided that the following people would play a leadership role for the 2012-2013 year. President - Sam Lobar Vice President - Scott Steinberg Secretary - Len Elgowsky Treasurer - Elliot Spieler
The Men’s Club reviewed the previous events of bowling, August picnic, and the High Holy Days participation. Membership dues for joining the Men’s Club will be $36. A membership application is now available. The Men’s Club is in the planning stages for the next social event for some time in January. More details will follow next month!
Regards, Len Elgowsky, Secretary

FAMILY BOWL-A-THON TO HELP RAISE MONEY FOR SANDY VICTIMS
Join Rabbi Sandford and Alex Kopnick as they challenge you to a bowl-a-thon to help raise money for Victims of Hurricane Sandy. We have lanes reserved at Brentwood Bowl, 9176 Winton Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45231 (513) 671-7222 and will be arriving there after Religious School on Sunday, December
9, 2012 at 12:30 p.m.
Here’s how it will work. Participants are in teams of two—a parent (or grandparent) and child (under age 18). A $40 registration fee per team is expected. This will include shoes, two games of bowling, and a light pizza lunch. Teams are asked to get sponsors so we can provide additional funds for our donation. It is suggested that teams ask non-participating family members and friends to sponsor them between $.01 and .15/pin—so that if the combined score of the team is 300 for both games, the sponsor will pay between $3.00 and $45.00 depending on the amount.
Teams can also be mixed doubles—meaning a male and female per team—if you wish to participate without having a school-aged child on your team. Ac-complished bowlers are encouraged to participate with heavy sponsorship from unsuspecting friends!
If you would like to participate, please send your registration fee to the Temple as soon as possible. You can download a sponsor form from the Temple website at www.valleytemple.com The team with highest scores will help Rabbi Kopnick decide where to send the proceeds—and get bragging rights until next year. Our Goal is to make a minimum donation of $500, which means we need at least 20 teams!!
Help us with the mitzvah of helping those in need—and let’s knock down some pins!
