I hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing Thanksgiving break and that each of you took a moment to reflect about what you’re thankful for.

As we conclude 2013, we want to share with you a cover story by Andrew Talevich (Washington State) in which he gives a recap about what’s happening with our Hollywood Lambda Chis. If you haven’t done so yet, be sure to go see Will Forte (California-Los Angeles) in the recently released movie Nebraska. In our opinion he should be nominated for an Oscar.\

We also have articles about our new Educational Foundation staff members, Charlie DeMaio (Indiana State) and Joe Hammer (Ball State). We are very fortunate to have these two, proven fundraisers join the Foundation staff. Remember, the Foundation is aggressively pushing to finish its $20 million Investing in Future Leaders capital campaign, one of the largest campaigns ever undertaken by any sorority or fraternity. To date, they’ve raised more than $18 million!

We also have articles about ELC recruitment, North Carolina State’s chartering banquet, the spring 2014 conclaves schedule, and the 2014 Neville Advisor’s College.

Finally, please remember that we don’t publish a January issue of the Cross & Crescent as we will be taking time off to be with our families and to ring in the New Year.

Akron (Gamma-Alpha)John S.”Jack” Watt (1945) died October 19, 2013. He was stationed in Japan for a year as part of occupational forces at the end of World War II. Upon his return he completed his bachelor’s degree from the University of Akron. He then earned his master’s degree and doctorate at the University of Akron. Watt taught at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, and Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, before returning to the University of Akron as an associate professor in the Department of Education. In the years to follow he would hold many positions including dean of the College of Education and vice president of academic affairs and provost. He served on the Board of Education of Akron Public Schools for 17 years, three of those years as president. He was also a member of the Ohio School Board Association.

Alabama-Birmingham (Sigma-Chi)The chapter held a Pumpkin Smash charity event, raising more than 5,000 pounds of food for Feeding America.

American (Pi-Omicron)On November 2, 2013, the colony received its charter by the Board of Directors.

A chartering banquet was held at Tony & Joe’s Seafood Place in Georgetown. In addition to all the current brothers and associate members, the attendees included; Nick Ludwig (Coe) and Joe Citro (Florida Southern), who were the initiators of the colonization efforts, chapter advisor Michael Blow (Pittsburgh), Fraternity Board Member John Graham (Franklin & Marshall), and former chapter president and a founder of the colony, William Erickson.

On November 14, 2013, alumnus brother Ron Paul (Gettysburg) was invited to speak at American University and several brothers had the opportunity to meet him at a reception after the event.

On November 22, 2013, the chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for six brothers: Austin Bryan, Sean O’Brien, Cody Guyer, Edgar Ortega, Jack Rucker, and Jack Stein.

Arizona State (Zeta-Psi)Daniel White died November 11, 2013.

Arkansas (Gamma-Chi) The chapter added 38 associate members during fall recruitment.

The chapter hosted its annual Watermelon Bust that involved various competitions between 10 sororities. The event also raised more than 140,000 pounds of canned goods for the local food pantry, LifeSource International.

The chapter won the intramural soccer championship.

Paired with Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, the chapter volunteered at a local preschool’s fall carnival.

Auburn - Montgomery (Phi-Kappa)From November 3-6, 2013, the chapter brothers hosted their annual 72-hour teeter-totter event at the quad on campus. The event raised more than 2,141 pounds of non-perishable food items.

On Friday, November 15, 2013, the chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for 18 associate members.

On Saturday, November 16, 2013, the chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for almost 40 associate members of the Huntingdon College Colony.

Boise State (Boise State Colony)The colony held its inaugural bingo bash in order to help raise food for local food banks. The event raised nearly 160 pounds of food.

Boston (Alpha)The chapter hosted its inaugural philanthropy event, Light Em Up. This inlcuded a laser tag event raising money and awareness for local Feeding America food banks. The event attracted more than 200 participants and raised more than $650 in donations. The chapter brothers created the laser tag arena inside of the university’s gym, building barricades out of cardboard boxes and mats. In addition, the Lambda chapter at Massachusetts Institute of Technology provided assistance with setup and made a donation.

Chapter brothers volunteered at Community Servings, an organization that prepares food for those in the greater Boston area who are extremely ill and unable to provide for themselves.

Bradley (Kappa-Upsilon)Gordon D. Selkirk (1953) died October 28, 2013. He was president of his class and his chapter. Selkirk was a warrant officer in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958 and served in the U.S. Army Reserves until September of 1964. Selkirk went to work for Wabco Truck in Peoria, Illinois. In 1968 he moved his family to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where he managed the Research and Development Lab of Oshkosh Truck. Ten years later he moved, once again, to Kalamazoo, Michigan, to work for Eaton Truck as the research lab manager.

Bucknell (Delta)Bruce Bowen (1982) was the 2013 recipient of the Bishop Kortz Award at the Moravian Theological Seminary’s Alumni Reunion Luncheon this past March. The Bishop Edwin W.

Kortz Award in Pastoral Counseling was established in 2004. The award honors a Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling (MAPC) graduate of Moravian Theological Seminary who has achieved excellence in the field of pastoral counseling ministry and who has brought distinction to the work and ministry of the Seminary.

Butler (Alpha-Alpha)Paired with the women of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, the chapter won Homecoming for the second year in a row.

The chapter held its annual Watermelon Bust in September, with proceeds from the event going to Gleaner’s Food Bank, the local partner with Feeding America.

Paired with Alpha Phi sorority, the chapter hosted its annual Haunted House for charity.

The chapter added a fall class of four associate members.

The chapter won the intramural flag football championship.

California - Los Angeles (Epsilon-Sigma)

During fall recruitment the chapter added 26 new members, including Berkeley Price who is a double legacy.

California Polytechnic (Phi-Sigma)

The chapter raised $1,000 for the SLO Foodbank in support of the Feeding America campaign.

Chapter brothers earned their third consecutive IFC Football championship.

California State-Fresno (Iota-Gamma)Jeffrey Zamensky (1982) died November 10, 2013.

California State-Northridge (Beta-Rho)

On November 22, 2013, the chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for 22 members.

The chapter collected more than 1,000 pounds of canned food in support of Feeding America.

Rick Isaac has set up a foundation, The Liberty Crew, in memory of his son, Josh, who died of a heroin overdose on August 29, 2013. Josh was 19 years old.

Steven E. Hartwig died October 9, 2013.

Case Western Reserve (Alpha-Nu)William Wirth (1951) died March 25, 2013. A U.S. Army veteran, he retired after 35 years from Duquesne Light as both an electrical engineer and a health physicist.

Central Missouri (Lambda-Pi)The chapter won the intramural football championship for the third consecutive year. The final score in this year’s championship game was 27 - 6.

On November 8, 2013, the chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for 15 brothers, pushing their chapter numbers to 1,249 total initiates. The chapter now has 42 initiated undergraduate members.

The Central Missouri Chop Christmas party will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at the Flying Saucer, 101 E 13th Street, in Kansas City’s Power & Light district. The chapter thanks Barry Woodson (1983), the alumni social event coordinator, for making these arrangements.

Monthly alumni meetings continue to be held on the third Monday evening of each month at brother Scott Kirkpatrick’s Pizza Shoppe in Lee’s Summit. The November gathering found 15 brothers in attendance. Guests included Charlie DeMaio, vice president for development of the Lambda Chi Alpha Educational Foundation, as well as four of the undergraduates. a legacy of enduring care, faithful service, leadership, and commitment to the College in a manner that defines its valued future and success. Established in 1972, only six individuals have previously been inducted into the Order of the Founders Circle. Charles is the first alumnus brother from Kappa-Mu to receive this award. In 1981, he received an honorary doctorate in Business Administration at Culver-Stockton’s commencement ceremonies. He is president and CEO of Charles Industries, Ltd., a company he founded seven years after his graduation from Culver-Stockton.

Drexel (Epsilon-Kappa)Three brothers were elected to IFC positions; Nick Christman is responsible for IFC new member development, Eddie Hopper is IFC events chairman, while Anand Patel is IFC scholastics chairman.

Chapter brothers hosted a day-long fundraiser that included a basketball tournament and a pasta dinner. The event raised almost $1,000 for cancer research.

William J. Beatty Jr. (1985) died November 17, 2013. He had a long career in the financial services industry, was actively involved in coaching many youth sports teams, and was a former board member of St. Teresa of Avila CYO.

Gerald H. Glick (1974) died May 16, 2013. He served as the chapter advisor from 1977-1981. He attended Drexel University on a basketball scholarship. After college he opened Jerry’s Fruit and Produce in the Gallery in Philadelphia. He would later venture into the restaurant business, opening “Pasta Cheech,” as well as “Blue Eyes, a Steak and Seafood Joint.” Glick spent many years on the fields of Cherry Hill Atlantic Little League where he was president of the league and district volunteer of the year.

Edinboro (Beta-Delta)Bill Henk (1975) has a blog post on the Marquette University website about his reunion trip back to his alma mater.

Cincinnati (Gamma-Gamma)The chapter held their semi-formal, the first in several years, at Dave & Buster’s in Springdale.

Cornell (Omicron)

Nineteen chapter brothers participated in Delta Gamma’s Walk for Sight.

Chapter brothers participated in the Phi Sigma Sigma 5k race.

Twenty chapter brothers joined Philanthropy Chairman Eric Ari Rubin (2015) in the collection of non-perishable foods for the Thanksgiving food drive benefiting Loaves and Fishes, the local food bank in Ithaca, New York. The chapter collected 169.5 pounds of food.

Culver-Stockton (Kappa-Mu)Former Foundation Board Member Joseph T. Charles (1960) was inducted into the Order of the Founders Circle at Culver-Stockton College on October 12, 2013. This honor is given to recognize distinguished individuals who have built

Eureka (Theta-Chi)Bruce Darnall wrote an article, Brewers’ TV Announcer Tells His Faith Story’s Play-by Play, about Milwaukee Brewers’ television announcer Brian Anderson. It was published on-line by Athletes in Action, the sports ministry for Campus Crusade for Christ. It tells about his life and his Christian faith.

Evansville (Iota-Mu)Chapter brothers raised more than 2,500 pounds during their canned food drive to benefit Feeding America.

The chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for Hwa Jong Lee.

Florida Southern (Epsilon-Xi)The chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for 26 brothers.

Florida Tech (Beta-Nu)On November 2, 2013, chapter brothers had a cultural mixer with Alpha Phi sorority, learning how to perform several different cultural dances.

On November 3, 2013, the chapter brothers raised approximately 4,500 pounds of food for Feeding America.

On November 8, 2013, the chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for 11 brothers.

George Washington (Delta-Xi)Geoff Cleveland, chairman of the Washington, DC Area Alumni Association, has formed his own comprehensive financial advising practice at RBC Wealth Management. He will continue to maintain his office in Washington, D.C.

Elmhurst (Pi-Zeta)

The chapter held a food drive and raised 3,000 pounds of food and $350 in donations.

Seventy-five percent of the initiates into Order of Omega and Gamma Sigma Alpha for the fall semester are from the chapter.

Embry–Riddle (Sigma-Phi)

For the past five years, the chapter has assisted the First United Methodist Church in DeLand, Florida, with the pumpkin patch. The proceeds from the pumpkin patch help “at risk” kids in the community. This year the chapter unloaded 2,000 pumpkins.

Georgia Tech (Beta-Kappa)Richard A. “Dick” Volavka (1966) died November 2, 2013. He began his 43-year career with the Babcock & Wilcox Co. as a service engineer. He spent many of his working years as district manager of the Cincinnati District, regional manager of the Northeast District, and regional manager of International Field Service. He moved to Birmingham, Alabama, in 2005 to serve as a senior service engineer liaison with Southern Co.

Gettysburg College (Theta-Pi)Chapter brothers held their traditional Thanksgiving dinner celebration.

Varsity soccer players Andrew Bellis and Devin Geiman were named as Academic All-Americans.

Huntingdon Colony (Huntingdon Colony)

Twenty-five members observed an Initiation Ritual Exemplification, conducted by brothers from the Sigma-Chi chapter at the University of Auburn-Montgomery.

Colony brothers competed in intramurals and the annual IFC dodgeball tournament.

Colony brothers participated in a canned food bag drop-off event.

Illinois (Chi)Two members were elected to the IFC Executive Board while two other members were selected to serve on the IFC Judicial Board.

Indiana (Alpha-Omicron)

In November, the chapter raised $13,730 for the annual Indiana University Dance Marathon.

Indiana State Colony (Iota-Epsilon Colony)

In November, chapter members held their first Food War competition charity event, raising more than $500 in donations and 1,500 pounds of food that they donated to the local Feeding America Food Bank in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Kansas (Zeta-Iota)

The chapter held a homecoming dinner and tailgate in October. There was a large alumni turnout on The Hill where the Parents Club provided an amazing meal for everyone.

On November 18, 2013, alumnus brother David Kious came to the weekly chapter meeting to share his Lambda Chi Alpha experiences, as well as his experiences after college. He is a talented comedian who also works in radio so it was a useful learning and networking opportunity for those who are communications majors.

Billy Meek (1950) died August 11, 2013.

John Fulkerson (1951) died March 2011.

Louisiana-Lafayette (Iota-Omega)The chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for 22 brothers.

Louisiana State (Upsilon)Maj. Gen. A. Harry Conrad, Jr. U.S. Army (Retired) (1946) died October 20, 2013. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1951 after completing Army ROTC, and was promoted to major general in 1982. Conrad commanded the 75th Maneuver Area Command in Houston and the 377th Theater Army Area Command in New Orleans. His military education included the Chemical Corps School, the Infantry School, Nuclear Weapons Employment, the Command and general Staff College, and the Army War College. His highest award is the Distinguished Service Medal. In his civilian career he was employed for 28

years by Monsanto in Texas City, retiring as a manufacturing superintendent in 1985. He was also employed by Sterling Chemical, retiring in 1995. He worked as a quality consultant for several years after retiring from Sterling.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Lambda)

The chapter held a brotherhood event that included a pumpkin carving contest.

Michigan Tech (Phi-Phi)In a single day, chapter brothers raised more than 6,000 pounds of food during the annual food drive for Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly. The university honored the chapter with a Caught In the Act Philanthropy Award for their Food Drive.

Millersville (Delta-Tau) The chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for five brothers.

Chapter members raised almost 9,000 pounds of food for Feeding America.

Ant Ciliberto was elected SGA vice president. Parth Petal assumed the position of Student Senate president.

Minnesota State-Mankato (Lambda-Delta)

On November 2, 2013, chapter brothers collected 2,223 pounds in food from the Mankato area, along with $944 in donations, all of which they donated to the ECHO Food Shelf as a part of the Feeding America campaign.

On November 22, 2013, the chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for 12 members.

Missouri-Columbia (Gamma-Kappa)At the homecoming competition the chapter won first in Greek Week, first in Division 1 Sports, and third in grades.

Missouri Science & Technology (Alpha-Delta)

Undergraduate brothers Michael Eichenseer and David Taylor have started a nutritional supplement company, Mobius

Nutrition. Their line of supplements includes an all natural energy drink mix called Primer. It is meant to replace unhealthy energy drinks, energy shots, and other energy supplements.

Montevallo (Sigma-Epsilon)Peter Strickland participated as a lead character in a recent production of “The Thugs” by the theater department at The University of Montevallo.

Murray State (Lambda-Eta)The chapter raised 13,810 pounds of food items for the Murray Need Line, as part of its work on behalf of Feeding America. Approximately 5,600 pounds were collected from the front porches of participating households. In addition, more than $2,000 in monetary donations will translate through wholesale conversion into another 8,000-plus pounds of food.

North Carolina-Greensboro (Phi-Theta)

The chapter held an Alumni Weekend that began with a Friday night Meet and Greet at Speakeasy Tavern. On Saturday the alumni were a part of the Greek village on the lawn, with great entertainment and plenty of food. The day culminated with food and games at Jake’s Billiards. On Sunday the weekend concluded with a cookout and football game.

North Carolina State (Gamma-Upsilon)

The chapter was paired with Alpha Delta Pi sorority for homecoming.

At the Greek Awards event, the chapter won the Best Council Involvement Award out of over 50 Greek organizations on campus. In addition, former chapter President Jake LaRoe received the Outstanding Chapter President Award.

On November 2, 277 alumni, actives, spouses, and guests gathered for a dinner banquet to celebrate the re-chartering of the chapter at North Carolina State University. This was followed by a video history of Lambda Chi Alpha and the local chapter, several speakers, and a band party. Alumni traveled from as far away as Texas, California, and the state of Washington, and were well represented from the 1960s to the 1990s. During the banquet, permanent annual awards in honor of Jerry L. Lassiter (1973) and John T. Kanipe Jr. (1962) were announced: The Jerry L. Lassiter Brother of the Year Award and The John T. Kanipe Jr. Award of Excellence. Chapter President Joe Furstenberg was presented the first Lassiter Brother of the Year Award. Former chapter President Jake LaRoe was presented with the first John T. Kanipe, Jr. Award of Excellence. LaRoe is also IFC president elect. Photos and video of the event can be accessed via the chapter’s website.

North Carolina - Wilmington (Delta-Sigma)

The chapter added 11 new members during fall recruitment.

North Dakota (Epsilon-Zeta)The chapter collected 7,500 pounds of food for the Feeding America food drive.

On November 22, 2013, the chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for 15 new members.

Shane Shuster was elected IFC social chairperson.

On November 23, 2013, the chapter hosted its annual White Rose Formal.

The chapter has an updated website.

Oklahoma (Gamma-Rho)The chapter held a ribbon cutting for the renovation of the 904 College Avenue chapter house that was built in 1926. The ceremony occurred on October 26, 2013, during homecoming weekend and with more than 300 undergraduate and alumni brothers in attendance. Alumni brothers Don Sherman, Bob Canfield, Raj Patel, Rennie Cook, and Rodger Lalli hosted the ceremony.

Chapter brothers teamed with sororities Pi Beta Phi and Alpha Lambda Gamma to place second in the homecoming competition. Their float took second place as well.

Chapter President Ray Wolber was crowned homecoming king at halftime of the football game.

On November 6, 2013, Jake Pasdach was elected IFC president. He is the third brother from Gamma-Rho to hold this position over the past four years.

Richard Allred (1960) died November 2, 2013. In November 1961 he was drafted and spent two years in the Army Engineer Test Unit at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He worked for 41 years for related companies Sivalls Inc. and Control Equipment Inc. He retired from Control Equipment, Inc. in 2003 as executive vice president.

Northwestern (Alpha-Iota)Frank Montana was elected IFC vice president of recruitment

Benjamin Teridch was appointed as a member of the Wildcat Welcome Board of Directors, the university’s orientation planning organization.

Matthew Connor became the chapter’s first associate member for the winter 2014 class.

The chapter house chimney and fireplace were cleaned. The wood burning fireplace was built in 1931 and is emblazoned with the earlier version of our coat of arms, which pre-dates our merger with Theta Kappa Nu.

Old Dominion (Sigma-Iota)

The chapter raised more than 427 pounds of canned goods and $1,375 for Feeding America.

The chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for 17 brothers, increasing the chapter size to 51 men.

Pittsburg State (Lambda-Chi)Evan Greenwall won The Mr. Cinderfellow Queen of the Ball.

Oregon (Zeta-Omicron)

The chapter held its annual Pumpkin Smash philanthropy, collecting 775 pounds of canned foods and more than $2,000 for the Food for Lane County.

The chapter won Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash and Chi Omega’s Chi Olympics.

The chapter earned a 3.17 cumulative GPA for the spring 2013 semester, third highest among fraternities.

Oregon State (Alpha-Lambda)

In November, the chapter hosted their annual Watermelon Bash philanthropy event, raising a total of $25,000 in 2013 for Community Outreach, the largest non-profit of its kind in Benton County, Oregon.

Chapter members were recognized for generating the most watt-hours of sustainable energy via workout equipment, and took home the championship for the Energy Civil War between Oregon State and the University of Oregon.

Chapter Vice President Owen Jones was elected IFC judicial chairman.

Chapter members won first place in racquetball and made the playoffs in football and bowling.

Rensselaer (Epsilon-Eta)The chapter held their annual food drive and collected 7,158 pounds of food for the Unity House. Approximately 2,658 pounds came from the chapter’s food drive collection while the remainder was collected as monetary contributions during the chapter’s annual Watermelon Bash.


The chapter’s intramural hockey team won the division championship, with a score of 4-2 in the final.

Fayette W. Vincent (1943) died November 8, 2013. He served in the U.S. Navy, participating in Operation Crossroads. He worked as a civil engineer.

Richmond (Alpha-Chi)On November 8, 2013, the chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for four brothers: Oliver Lee, Andy Rothman, Connor Kelly, and Danny Fiddleman.

Rose-Hulman (Theta-Kappa)The chapter hosted its third annual Pumpkin Bash charity event. As in previous years, teams competed in pumpkin-themed field events such as Pumpkin Bowling, Pumpkin Throwing, Pumpkin Relay, etc. The big event was preceded by a week-long bake sale. The events raised $550, which was donated to local Feeding America food banks.

Samford (Theta-Alpha)Michael O. Newton (1963) died November 3, 2013. He served as a member of the U.S. Army National Guard. He was employed for many years in the fluid power industry.

San Diego (Delta-Kappa)On November 9, 2013, the chapter and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority hosted Ballers for Children, a 3-on-3 charity basketball tournament.

Chapter brothers participated in A Walk in Her Shoes, Bayside Community Center Gardening, and Feed My Starving Children.

San Diego Regional Alumni Association

On December 4, 2013, the alumni association will host a North County Meet and Greet for alumni living in San Diego County. The event will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Lumberyard Tavern and Grill in Encinitas, California. The event is hosted by alumni brother James Pedersen. San Diego State (Zeta-Pi)Mike Guyer (1971) died November 6, 2013.

Shepherd (Phi-Iota)

From September 27 to 28, 2013, chapter members participated in 24-hour teeter-totter marathon with the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. The event raised about $5,000 for the Cumberland Valley Breast Cancer Alliance.

The chapter collected and donated canned foods to a local church for Thanksgiving.

During homecoming, chapter President Thomas Landzert was named Homecoming Prince while Mark Gruber and Andrew Dhionis won the corn hole tournament.


South Dakota (Alpha-Gamma)The chapter raised more than 11,000 pounds of food for Feeding America.

The chapter conducted the Initiation Ritual Exemplification for the colony brothers at the South Dakota State University.

Southern Indiana (Phi-Xi)The chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for 15 brothers.

The chapter held their annual Pumpkin Bust, raising more than 3,741 pounds of food for Feeding America.

Three chapter members were elected to IFC officer positions.

Southern Methodist (Gamma Sigma)The chapter finished its annual food drive for the North Texas Food Bank, raising 11,890 pounds of food. Chapter members went door-to-door throughout local neighborhoods, stacked cans in collection boxes, and solicited around campus for food and monetary donations,

Stetson (Stetson Colony)

The colony brothers hosted an alumni event during homecoming.

Texas (Alpha-Mu)At the chapter’s academic banquet, 22 brothers were recognized for earning a 3.75 GPA or higher and 36 were recognized for earning a 3.5 GPA or higher for the spring 2013 semester.

More than 80 percent of the chapter brothers are involved in at least one other campus organization.

Towson (Phi-Omega)

Chapter members planted trees around Towson, joined Lambda Theta Alpha sorority to learn more about historic art figures, and co-sponsored a civility event with Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

Wabash (Alpha-Kappa)Two chapter brothers are members of the varsity basketball team. Four chapter brothers are members of the varsity wrestling team. Three chapter brothers are members of the varsity swim team.

Wilmington (Pi-Delta)On November 16, 2013, chapter brothers collected some 1,500 pounds of canned goods and other nonperishable food items from local residents during its annual fall food drive. The chapter donated 1,500 pounds to the Sugartree Ministries’ Your Father’s Kitchen food pantry.

Chapter brothers assisted Mary Lou Holdren in setting up her well-known holiday display of Disney characters that she has hand-painted over the years. This Christmas season will mark her 21st year in presenting the Randolph Street display for area children.

Wichita State (Wichita State Colony)

On November 14, 2013, five colony brothers volunteered at the Kansas Food Bank, packaging 392 lunches so that children may have meals over the weekend.

Wittenberg (Nu-Zeta)Thomas Gariti was elected IFC treasurer and Nelson Laracuente was elected IFC chief justice.

Tulsa (Epsilon-Upsilon)James K. Johnston (1940) died July 13, 2013. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and had a long and distinguished career in oil and natural gas exploration with Republic Natural Gas and Mobil Oil Corp.

Villanova (Beta-Iota)Chapter founders Fred Folco (1973) and John Constantine (1973) both attended their Villanova University Alumni Leadership Conference. Folco is a director of the Villanova University

Alumni Association and Constantine is Northern California chapter president.

Virginia Commonwealth Colony (Virginia Commonwealth Colony)

The chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for 15 brothers, raising the total number of initiated undergraduate brothers to 38.

The chapter finished first in intramural dodge ball, winning the Greek division.

Over the last year, chapter members have conducted campus cleanups, helped fix parts of the WYO theater, and donated more than 7,000 pounds of food to charities in Cheyenne and Laramie as a part of Feeding America. At Relay for Life, the chapter raised $1,128 for cancer research and received the top fraternity award.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Pi)

The chapter’s charity event, to benefit both Feeding America and the Friendly House, is underway with an aggressive goal of gathering 250,000 pounds of food. To reach their goal, chapter brothers distributed 12,000 collection bags to homes in the Worcester community. They hope to provide food for up to 2,000 families. Alumni brothers are also participating in this annual event by providing canned goods and financial donations. In addition to going door-to-door, chapter members also set up a table at a local AHL Hockey Game and accepted canned good donations prior to the game. Chapter Vice President Zachary Stewart remains optimistic that the chapter’s goal remains achievable.

Wyoming (Delta-Rho)

The chapter added 10 new members during fall recruitment, raising the total chapter size to 22 brothers.

The chapter achieved a 3.15 GPA, the highest of all men’s fraternities.


FEATURE

To many individuals, the Holiday season is a time to gather with family and friends and find entertainment in the latest movies and television shows. This season promises to be abundant with productions that include intriguing storylines and talented acting. Among the talented actors featured in this season’s top shows and movies is a batch of Lambda Chi actors.

In two of this season’s early releases, “Nebraska” and “Dallas Buyers Club,” Lambda Chi brothers Will Forte and Michael

O’Neill play prominent roles in each respective film. Meanwhile, James Rebhorn is featured on the popular television show “Homeland”, while Powers Boothe is a recurring actor on “Nashville.”

Some of these projects have already generated enormous Oscar and Emmy buzz. This demonstrates the talent and diversity of Lambda Chi’s top Hollywood stars.

“Nebraska” – Will Forte (California–Los Angeles)

“Nebraska” (released Nov. 15, 2013) is about a father, Woody Grant, and his middle-aged son, David Grant, who travel from Montana to Nebraska to claim several million dollars that the father believes he won in a magazine sweepstakes. Forte plays the role of David Grant who reluctantly travels with his father across middle-America to Nebraska, as the father and son meet with family and friends who are enamored with Woody’s claim to winning the sweepstakes. The film has gained critical acclaim and was nominated for the Palme d’Or, the highest award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Contrary to previous lighthearted projects featuring Forte, such as the film McGruber and the TV series Saturday Night Live in which Forte was a cast member for eight seasons, Nebraska takes on a somber tone with Forte’s character being the catalyst for this dismal film.

This year Forte has also starred in the films “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” and “Grown Ups 2”, along with the television shows “Drunk History,” “Bob’s Burgers,” and “Lab Rats.”

“Dallas Buyers Club” – Michael O’Neill (Auburn)

“Dallas Buyers Club” (released Nov. 22, 2013) is another of the major films released earlier this season that have generated a lot of Oscar buzz. In this film Matthew McConaughey plays Ron Woodroof, a carefree Dallas rodeo cowboy who unexpectedly contracts the AIDS virus in 1985. Desperate to find a solution to survive, Woodroof begins smuggling non-FDA approved anti-viral medications into the United States. With the assistance of his doctor, Eve Saks (played by Jennifer Garner) and a fellow patient, Rayon (played by Jared Leto), Woodroof creates a smuggling and distribution ring to make these medications available to people across the United States.

O’Neill plays Richard Barkley, an FDA agent who is working to stop Woodroof ’s Dallas Buyers Club from distributing illegal medication to HIV and AIDs patients. Barkley is the main force that stands between the club’s international success and its demise.

O’Neill reprises his role as a straight-laced, authoritarian figure, one that has made him popular in several movies and on television shows over the last two decades. Previous projects include “The West Wing,” “Vegas,” “Necessary Roughness,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

“Nashville” – Powers Boothe (Texas State–San Marcos)

ABC’s “Nashville” quickly gained popularity after its debut more than a year ago. The show features Connie Britton as Rayna Jaymes, a notable country singer who struggles to maintain her supremacy in the country music scene. Alongside Jaymes, “Nashville” also displays a collection of talented country music singers who encounter hardships with their fame and personal relationships.

Powers Boothe plays Lamar Wyatt, the father of Rayna Jaymes. Wyatt is an influential businessman with a heavy-handed approach for getting what he wants. Wyatt can be ruthless and controlling of those around him, but at other times can be redemptive and soft-hearted.

“Nashville” is currently in the middle of its second season. The complete first season is now available on DVD.

Boothe is also set to appear in the upcoming Sin City sequel, “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,” based upon Frank Miller’s graphic novels. Boothe will play Senator Roark.

“Homeland” – James Rebhorn (Wittenberg)

The Showtime television series “Homeland” is currently nearing the end of its third season. Damian Lewis plays Nicholas Brody, a Marine sergeant who is rescued after eight years of being captured and held by Al-Qaeda terrorists. Carrie Mathison, played by Claire Danes, is a CIA agent who suspects that Lewis is a double agent. In the show Mathison also struggles with bipolar disorder.

James Rebhorn plays a recurring role on “Homeland” as Frank Mathison, Carrie’s father who is often concerned with his daughter’s health. Homeland won the 2012 Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series and the 2012 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Drama Series.

Rebhorn has displayed his versatility as an actor by also appearing in the off-Broadway production, “Too Much, Too Much, Too Many.” He plays James, a man who dies from Alzheimer’s disease and leaves behind his grief-stricken widow who locks herself in her room for a year. “Too Much, Too Much, Too Many” is currently playing at The Black Box Theatre in New York and will run until Jan. 5, 2014.

The first weekend of November was a landmark period for the newly reestablished chapter of Gamma-Upsilon at North Carolina State University and for Dr. James W. Owens (1968).

While the official chartering ceremony was on April 28th, the chapter felt it was only right to recognize the work of the chapter’s alumni who helped restart the zeta. Over 200 alumni, undergraduate brothers, and brothers from other campuses took part in the rechartering celebrations.

On Saturday, November 2, the chapter held a banquet in recognition of their new charter. The charter itself was graciously received by Chapter President Joe Furstenberg and former chapter presidents Jake LaRoe and David Bohle. David Huffine (North Carolina-Greensboro), Lambda Chi Alpha’s Grand High Phi, delivered a moving speech about the work of the undergraduate brotherhood and commended everyone who made this momentous event

happen. The name of each undergraduate inscribed on the charter was read aloud. This charter represents a beginning for the chapter. While much work went into becoming a chapter, the time now is to go above and beyond and to continually work towards success in everything we do.

In the last month, Furstenberg and several other brothers have worked to secure a house on Greek Row for Lambda Chi Alpha to move into. This news was a surprise to the alumni in attendance and was greeted with much cheering. In three short years a colony was established, the colony became a chapter, and now the chapter has secured a 35-bed home on Greek Row.

Order of Achievement Recognition

The night before the rechartering banquet, on Friday, November 1, Dr. James W. Owens, former chairman and CEO of Caterpillar Inc., received Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity’s Order of Achievement Award during a North Carolina State University alumni dinner at the University Club. Owens is a native of Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

The award was presented to Owens by Mark Bauer, president and CEO of the Lambda Chi Alpha Educational Foundation, and David Huffine, a member of the General Fraternity Board of Directors. NC State University Board of Trustees member Ben Jenkins was present for the award and brought greetings and congratulations to Owens. Previously, NC State Lambda Chi Alpha alumnus Dr. William C. Friday (1941), an honorary initiate, and Mark B. Templeton (1974), CEO of Citrix, received the award.

Owens is currently first vice chair of the NC State University Board of Trustees. He is a recipient of the NC State Watauga Medal and was recognized as the 2009 Person of the Year by the College of Management.

After spending 38 years working in a variety of assignments with Caterpillar Inc., Owens retired in November 2010. His Caterpillar experience included international living/working opportunities in Geneva, Switzerland, and Jakarta, Indonesia. He was president of Solar Turbines in San Diego from 1990-

93 and corporate CFO from 1993-95. In 1995 he became group president and a member of Caterpillar’s executive office. While chairman, Owens served on the Executive Committee of the Business Roundtable, was chairman of the Business Council, and served as an advisor to Presidents Bush and Obama.

Owens is currently a director of Alcoa, Inc. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, IBM Corporation in Armonk, New York, and Morgan Stanley in New York City. He also serves as a senior advisor to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. in New York. He

is chairman of the executive committee for the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, D.C., and is a director of the Council of Foreign Relations in New York. He served on the Executive Committee of the Business Council and was a member of President Obama’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board, 2009-10.

In accepting the Order of Achievement Award, Owens said, “I am thankful for the deep friendship bonds and personal growth opportunities that came from my time as an active Lambda Chi brother at NC State.”

The Order of Achievement is presented to honor those members who have distinguished themselves by outstanding success in fields such as business, industry, education, the arts, science, or the professions. Their accomplishments bring honor to Lambda Chi Alpha and serve as an inspiration to their brothers. They are examples of the Fraternity’s ethics and ideals for alumni and undergraduates.

Charlie DeMaio

Charlie DeMaio has joined the Lambda Chi Alpha Educational Foundation as vice president for development.

In his new position, DeMaio will focus on completion of the $20 million Investing in Future Leaders Campaign, one of the largest ever undertaken within the fraternity and sorority community. His responsibilities include Development Operations of the Foundation.

Previously, DeMaio worked as the executive director of alumni affairs at Indiana State University, his alma mater, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1973. He also has more than 32 years of experience in business, serving as vice president for two large companies and 35 years as a volunteer and fundraiser for Indiana State University.

Joe Hammer

Joe R. Hammer has joined the Lambda Chi Alpha Educational Foundation as vice president of alumni relations and annual support.

In his new role, Hammer will focus on further development and implementation of the alumni and undergraduate mentoring program, as well as supporting the annual giving efforts that help fund leadership development and educational programs for current and future undergraduate members.

Previously, Hammer served as the director of corporate and foundation relations for Conner Prairie Interactive Historic Park in Fishers, Indiana. Before Conner Prairie, he worked for Hemming+Gilman Productions in New York City, specializing in large fundraising events with a concentration in the disease foundation market, in addition to some colleges, universities, and museums.

“I find the aspirations and goals of the Foundation to be extremely intriguing,” Hammer said. “From the outset it was apparent that this would be a new job with new challenges, and an opportunity to contribute to a significant organization in a meaningful way. I’m pleased, honored, and excited to be part of a great team.”

Hammer first joined the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity staff in 1979 as a chapter consultant and later became the director of alumni affairs and conference coordinator. Hammer earned his bachelor’s degree in radio/TV and music from Ball State University in 1976, followed by his master’s degree in public relations in 1978.

Host chapters, dates, and locations are complete for spring 2014 regional conclave meetings. 2014 Conclave Schedule

As early as 1916, chapters began participating in inter-zeta functions. These early, regional events were loosely scheduled depending upon the host chapter’s plans during the school term.

These regional events took on the title of Lambda Chi Alpha State Days in the 1920s and continued to be an excellent way for the majority of brothers in a chapter to interact with those from other campuses, as well as with alumni throughout the country. Theta Kappa Nu also had regional events where chapters would come together to discuss issues facing campuses throughout the Fraternity.

Though these were effective, even after the merger in 1939 it became apparent that some states had more than a few chapters to gather together and that there were some states where being the lone chapter meant the annual conferences were the more practical events to attend; so the conclave came into being.

In Lambda Chi Alpha, the term conclave refers to grouping regional chapters together, based on location, as well as to the event itself where these collections of chapters meet.

By the 1940s a more geographically proportionate division of chapters into conclaves meant that brothers from every chapter had the opportunity to participate in inter-zeta events.

Many times a conclave serves as the only chance, aside from an ELC visit, that a man will interact with the General Fraternity. A typical General Fraternity function will attract 7 to 8 percent of the total undergraduate population, while a conclave can effectively target 40 to 50 percent of the region’s totals.

Student Advisory Committee Elections

Each conclave is represented by a Student Advisory Committee member, selected by the delegation at each regional conclave. The SAC members serve a one year term that starts at the beginning of the academic school year and runs through the following Leadership Seminar or General Assembly.

SAC was formed to help the Lambda Chi Alpha staff and the Grand High Zeta stay in touch with current undergraduate concerns and problems, and to allow undergraduates to communicate directly with Lambda Chi Alpha’s highest levels of international authority.

SAC plays a vital role in Lambda Chi Alpha’s ability to remain on top of the fraternal world. SAC has developed and helped pass almost all of the significant legislation inside Lambda Chi Alpha including: the alcohol policy, the anti-hazing policy, associate membership, higher academic standards, and the creation of minimum operating standards for chapters.

Job Description: Primarily responsible for providing the Grand High Zeta and International Headquarters staff with an undergraduate insight into issues dealing with the Fraternity.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• To attend board and committee meetings.

• Advise the Grand High Zeta and International Headquarters staff on undergraduate issues and offer potential solutions to address these issues.

• Complete tasks and projects assigned by the Headquarter staff and Grand High Zeta in a timely manner.

• Communicate regularly with and provide updates to all of the chapters and colonies in your region.

• Be an example and role model to all brothers by abiding by state, local, federal, and fraternal policies.

• Provide honest feedback to the Headquarter staff when issues are discussed.

• Must be an active brother who is enrolled on a collegiate campus for a year.

• Must have a passion for Lambda Chi Alpha.

• Bring credibility to the position through living our values and ritual.

• Must have excellent interpersonal skills, be able to work with undergraduates and alumni, and be able to respect others’ opinions.

Educational Leadership Consultants (ELCs) must be servant-leaders who are committed to fulfilling the specific duties of an ELC, while following directions toward aiding in the larger goals and objectives of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. It is essential that the ELC embody what Lambda Chi Alpha is supposed to stand for, as well as to invest the required time, passion, and energy not only in the development of subordinate zetas, but also the individual brothers whom the ELC serves.

Specific Duties

The Educational Leadership Consultant should be willing to:

• Commit to two (2) years of service in this position

• Participate fully in the consultant development program

• Accept and execute administrative tasks associated with conferences and conclaves

• Lead the delivery of Lambda Chi Alpha’s educational curriculum for undergraduate and potential alumni brothers at conferences and conclaves, and during chapter visitations

• Execute tasks associated with preparing for chapter visitation throughout the year

• Convey to the chapters the expectations, goals, and objectives of the Office of Administration

• Work with chapters to set goals and objectives, and follow up with chapters on these goals and objectives until completed

• Convey to the Office of Administration the desires and aspirations of chapters, as well as provide accurate details regarding the condition of chapter operations.

• Evaluate chapters and collect data regarding chapter operations, ritual equipment, finances, and

implementation of Lambda Chi Alpha’s educational curriculum

• Organize meetings with High Pis and campus professionals prior to each chapter visit

• Spend time with non-officers during chapter visits once formal duties conclude each day

• Represent Lambda Chi Alpha Headquarters Staff at various training venues, as assigned

• Perform other duties as assigned to meet objectives of Lambda Chi Alpha

Skill Sets

It is essential that the ELC have a high regard for the collaborative efforts of a team, with a spirit of support for its leader and members, in addition to the following:

• Be a proven team leader and able to inspire others

• Be able to organize, set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects consistently

• Possess strong written and verbal communication abilities, effective presentation skills, and problem solving abilities

• Show the necessary aptitude, independence, and abilities to successfully travel throughout North America during an academic year.

Education: A bachelor’s degree is required

Compensation: Competitive base salary along with health, 401(k), and vacation benefits.

More than 100 of the newest alumni brothers will attend this year’s annual two-day training session in Indianapolis. 2014 Neville Advisor’s College

The 2014 Neville Advisor’s College will be held from January 30 to February 2, 2014, at the Alexander Hotel in Indianapolis. The Neville Advisor’s College will focus this year on our newest alumni volunteers, as well as members of alumni control boards and of house corporations.

Advisor’s College is a developmental program aimed at providing the skills and resources necessary to assist our undergraduate members to be successful in providing a values-based fraternal experience. The sessions will be facilitated by educational professionals, Master Stewards, International Headquarters Staff, and experts on specific subjects.

The program has been designed to prepare advisors, over the course of the weekend, with teaching and mentoring skills centered on the concepts in the True Brother Initiative.
