This year’s Annual Presentation Dinner marked the 40th Anniversary of the Club’s existence. A number of veterans, including founders, attended this function, which was held at a hotel at Qawra. The evening was well attended and the atmosphere was a pleasant one. The evening reached its climax when those who distinguished themselves best during the season were awarded for their efforts. A Roll of Honours list is on page 4. A memento commemorating the club’s 40th Anniversary was also presented to each veteran attending the dinner. Pictures of those who attended are on page 5

Dear All,Not every institution survives 40 years. All summed up Floriana Young Stars HC enjoyed the good times, fought its way to survival in not so good times and here we are in 2013 celebrating the club’s 40th Anniversary. I must begin by congratulating our senior team for claiming the knockout competition in style on our club’s 40th anniversary!! And as the saying goes where there is a will there is a way. In the knock-out final against Qormi, after going 2-0 down early in the first half we got one back just before half-time and scored a second to restore parity just after the start of the second half. The match was a balanced one until ten minutes from time when from a penalty corner Elton Cutajar deflected to score his very first goal at senior level. The team managed to hold-on to the slender advantage to win the cup after a three-year absence. Overall 2013 has been quite a positive year for the club, where the U/17s obtained the runner-up position, the senior team ended the league on a par with Qormi only to lose the title decider at extra time with the odd goal in seven against the run of play. We have also played in all the finals on the local scene this year that is the super cup, challenge cup and knock-out. We clinched the knock-out 3-2 in the replay of the final, which automatically granted us a spot in the super cup against Qormi at the beginning of the current season. Unfortunately we failed to clinch both the Super Cup and Challenge Cup. In fact we narrowly lost the Challenge cup 1-2 to Rabat after going 1-0 up. But results apart, the feeling at the club is that of a one big family once more, which is starting to make the difference! It was so evident at senior decider and final matches. Our senior players’ families, veterans, juniors and friends turned up at Kordin to support the team. From here our heartfelt thanks to all those who cheered and supported the team. It was so great seeing founder members and ex-players coming to support the team or sending their best wishes through electronic media. A healthy team spirit was also ever evident between the players and coaching staff throughout the year.As a Juniors head coach I must also thank Reno Cremona, the senior squad coach with whom I liaised closely to make sure our young

guns are brought into the senior squad at the right time. In fact from a juniors perspective it was great to see up and coming players like Ryan Seychell, Aidan Somers, Elton Cutajar and Jamie Mifsud being given the nod by Reno to form part of the senior squad. These have already proved their worth this season whenever called for action with the seniors. We are starting to reap fruit from the hard work put in by the Junior Section in the past years. This season we are starting to see players such as Karl Chircop, Leon Gatt, David Mizzi, Nathan Xuereb, Karl Borg, Kevin Farrugia and Matthew Xuereb training with the senior squad after having 2 very positive tournaments in the 40th anniversary summer tournament and quadrangular friendly tournament. The latter included the Rabat senior team as well as our Sicilian friends representing Ragusa HC senior team. I would like to end this editorial by sending a short message to our juniors: To be successful and enjoy life it does not matter how talented you are but how enthusiastic you are about nurturing and improving your natural ability, whatever the level of your abilities are. The fact that our juniors organised hockey matches at the club premises on their own accord during their summer holidays shows their willingness to enjoy playing and improving their skills. May I take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a Merry Xmas and prosperous New Year. Fortis in aeternum (Forever Strong)!!

Every picture tells a story. So they say. Surely these

pictures are first hand evidence of a successful Presentation Dinner marking the club’s 40th Anniversary.

Year 4 Issue 16

The Club has recently launched its new website. Its address is: florianayoungstars.weebly.com/ The site created and managed by Ralph Agius Fernandez is divided into seven pages. In the Home page one can find extensive updated reports of the matches played and latest news on the ongoings at the club, whilst tables are accessible in the Fixtures/Standings page. Other pages include the Club’s History and Committee and Juniors Section, the latter including up to the last minute tables of each section’s standings. An interesting page is the Gallery section where one can pry to see whether one is featured or not in one of the various pictures inserted. One can also apply to become a member by hitting the Join Us tab. Finally the More section gives the visitor two options: firstly the chance to express his/her opinion or suggestion on anything related to the club or to the site itself and secondly to download any of the past “Junior Dribbler” issues. The site is updated regularly and should serve to promote our club and also hockey in general. Well done Ralph from the Editorial Board.

The Young Stars 40th Anniversary Summer Tournament drew to a close with Rabat Depiro winning the final game against Floriana 'A' in a match that was decided on penalties after a 2-2 scoreline. Unfortunately, Floriana 'A' were unable to convert any of their penalties thus handing over the honours to Rabat.A big well done to all involved.
