Rabbis Message

Akira Kitade and the Sugihara Jews

Survivors and their stories. . . . To the best of my knowledge, no one from either side of my

family was lost in the Shoah. There arent even any survivors among us. My ancestors came from Germany, Poland and Russia with the different waves of immigration of those

particular communities, and everyone I know about was here in New York by the beginning

of World War I. I have heard and read personal accounts of survivors and their children

mostly through my work and studies as a rabbi. There is one phenomenon that has become

clearer to me with each passing year. That is the phenomenon of credibility. I have often been

struck by the convoluted and unbelievable qualities of many of the stories I have heard. And

yet, with each one, the truth has become increasingly and more excruciatingly clear.

Unbelievable and convoluted as they may sound, every one of these stories is the truth,

and the people telling them are alive today because of a momentary quirk of fate that turned potential disaster

into a reprieve. And, indeed, the memories they hold inside, and the effects of their experiences upon

their children and grandchildren, and beyond, still cannot be fully measured .

A boy with blonde hair and blue eyes. . . . I remember a short recollection by a second-generation survivor - a

friend of mine. She said I could tell the story but asked that I not print her name. Her parents were survivors

of the Lodz Ghetto, and she herself was born in a DP camp in Germany. She speaks fluent Yiddish, because

that is the language her parents spoke at home. At the Bar Mitzvah of her son, some 23 years ago now, she

took a few minutes to speak to her family. In fluent Yiddish, she said: What Im about to tell you is not a fantasy or a figment of my imagination. When our son was born and I looked at him for the first time, I knew

I had seen him before. She went on to explain that she had seen a family photo of her uncles family (her fathers brother) taken in Poland his wife and his five children, all of whom were killed in the Shoah. Only her uncle survived and moved to Israel. But sure enough, there in one of the family pictures, was a young boy

who looked exactly like her new little baby boy. I was so profoundly moved by this recollection that even

after all these years, I still remember her words that day of her sons Bar Mitzvah. The postscript is that when I spoke with her recently she told me that that Bar Mitzvah boy, who is now 35, has a young son of his own.

And indeed, that son, her grandson, with striking blue eyes and blonde hair, is also a virtual reflection of that

same young boy in the photograph the cousin that none of them would never know.

Sugiharas Jews and another personal story . . . . Chiune Sugihara was a Japanese diplomat who issued Visas for Life to some 6,000 Jews, saving them from certain death. He was one of those we call chasidei umot haolam, often translated as Righteous Gentiles, or, simply, Rescuers. We paid tribute to Chiune Sugihara several years ago at Union Temple on the anniversary of Kristallnacht. Akira Kitade is a freelance

writer, born in Japan in 1944. He has written a book called Visas of Life and the Epic Journey: How the Sugihara Survivors Reached Japan. In his research, Mr. Kitade found a small group of photos of these survivors in an album, and found one of the people in these pictures living here in New York, on Long Island.

Her name was Sonia Reed, and she was the mother of our friend and congregant David Reed. When David

looked at this picture, indeed, that young girl in the photo was, most assuredly, his mother.

Our opportunity to hear. . . . Through Davids efforts, we will have the opportunity to hear from Akira Kitade himself, as he comes to speak with us on Shabbat Evening, December 11th. Our Kabbalat Shabbat

service begins at 6:30 PM in the sanctuary, and Mr. Kitade will make his presentation during the

service. We will share some dinner together following the service and presentation. I hope you will join us

and the Reeds for services and this opportunity to hear this presentation and look at this book. This is part of

the story of our people: the story of Am Yisrael.

Officers Column

As the Days Get Colder

As I write this article it is early November and the temperature outside is going up to 70 degrees. It is hard to

imagine that winter is just around the corner. But the truth is winter is almost here.

The big holiday celebration for December is of course Chanukah. Our annual Family Chanukah Party is on

Sunday, December 13 from 4:00 7:00 PM. Kids will have fun activities and the adults will have vodka and

latkes to enjoy in their own part of our Social Hall. It is a wonderful family event that is not to be missed.

Union Temple is a great place to come in out of the cold. We think of ourselves as a warm and welcoming

congregation. I strongly believe that our Temple community lives up to that. Please tell your friends about

Union Temple and bring them to services or events. I encourage you, as the days get colder, to find warmth

and friendship at our Shabbat services, as we light candles and wish each other a warm Shabbat Shalom.

Sisterhood

A Discovery Most Chilling

What would you do if you suddenly discovered that your grandfather was a notorious Nazi concentration camp commandant who had sent an incalculable number of Jews to their deathsand would have included you among them? Join us on Sunday, December 20, at 10:00 AM, as we discuss Jennifer Teeges riveting memoir, My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me. The daughter of a German mother, Monika Goeth, and a Nigerian student, Jennifer spent her early life in an orphanage until she was adopted at the age of seven. During her years in the orphanage, she had contact with her mother and grandmother, but she was never told anything about her family roots. It was not until she was thirty-eight years old that she accidentally came upon a library book that revealed her grandfather was the sadistic Amon Goeth, The Butcher of Plaszw, who was chillingly portrayed by Ralph Fiennes in the film Schindlers List. Jennifers painful journey of discovery takes her to Poland and to Israel, and will touch the heart of everyone who joins her on it.

Havent had chance to read or finish the book? Not to worry. You are sure to have much to contribute to the conversation as we discuss how the dark secrets of the past overshadow the lives of us all in the present. Be sure to be with us for a morning of stimulating talk, good food, and good friends.

And dont forget to join us on Saturday evening, December 5, at 5:00 PM, for our annual Havdalah service with Brotherhood. As in the past, this moving event will be followed by a visit to the Brooklyn Museum to participate in its festive First Saturday activities. There will be music, hands-on art, and great exhibits to choose among. Its an exhilarating evening that you wont want to miss, and a great way to begin the wind down of 2015.

Were you with us in October for our visit to the Anne Frank Center? We thank our own Dr. Gail Levine-Fried for organizing this inspiring morning led by an enlightening museum docent and followed by a delicious lunch at the Woolworth Tower Kitchen restaurant.

We have many more exciting trips and programs coming your way. We hope that you will be with us for them alland as a member. If you have not yet renewed your membership, please do so promptly, and if you are not yet a Sisterhood member, we hope you will join us now. Its as easy as writing a check for $40 to Sisterhood of Union Temple. In this season of giving, we hope you will also consider making a contribution to Sisterhoods Memorial Fund, Rose Keit Flower Fund, or Happy Day Fund. What more meaningful way could there be to honor or remember our loved ones?

Education Corner

Celebrate at Union Temple I am excited that we have a lot of activity happening this December at Union Temple. Please join us for our first Breakfast of the school year with Rabbi Goodman, Strangers in Our Midst: Asylum Seekers and Jews.

Rabbi Goodman will talk about the ongoing crisis of refugees in Israel and how we can be part of the solution. In addition to this, we have several opportunities to celebrate Chanukah here at Union Temple. I hope to see you at one of the celebrations!

Chanukah Celebrations at Union Temple

PJ Library presents a Chanukah Concert with Debbie Brukman on December 13 from 3:30-4:00 PM. Debbie is a talented musician with a devoted following among the tots of Brooklyn. For more information or to RSVP, please contact Kimberly Lisi at kimberly@utpreschool.org.

Following the concert, there will be a Temple-wide Chanukah Celebration from 4:00-7:00 PM. We will have music by DJ Daigoro, snacks and drinks for adults, kid-friendly food. The Youth group will be leading games, cookie decorating and card making for the kids. We will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for a toy drive. There will be a large candle-lighting ceremony. Each family should bring their menorah and candles so we can light the candles together. The cost for the party is $5 per family in advance, $10 per family at the door. Our Preschool professional staff is largely the same as last year. We have had a few minor changes including

the addition of a wonderful new head teacher.

Kerri Mulder joined our staff in September as the head teacher of the Sparrows, one of our threes classes. Kerri has had an interesting personal and professional life, which has taken her to many parts of the country. Kerri was born

in San Diego and lived there until she was in the sixth grade, when her family moved to Northern Virginia. She

loved living in California and says, "Its the best place to be a child, it never snows." Her family moved to Northern Virginia where her father, who was in the Navy, worked for the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Kerri lived in

Virginia through high school and then moved to Florida where she attended Florida State, majoring in Theater.

After graduation Kerri worked in New England in the Berkshires for three years in year-round camps. These

camps offered programs for children and adults, in areas like team-building and nature science. Through her

experience at these camps she found that she really enjoyed working with children and moved to New York to

attend NYU's Masters in Theater Education program. As part of her Masters program Kerri did student teaching in both a kindergarten and a high school. It quickly became clear to her that working with younger

children was her passion. "I felt much more comfortable working with young children and it was a lot more

fun." She loved their enthusiasm and enjoyed being a part of all of the significant development that occurs in

the early years. So she enrolled at Hunter College to study early childhood education.

Kerri's first job after completing her Masters work was a one-year stint as an associate teacher at Dalton in Manhattan. She then moved on to Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights, where she worked as an

associate teacher for two years; first with three-year-olds, and then in a kindergarten classroom.

Kerri has been a wonderful addition to our professional staff. Her easygoing manner and sense of joy has

created a classroom that feels relaxed and happy, and her students feel comfortable and supported as they

explore the world around them. We are so happy to have Kerri as a member of our staff!

THE SHALOM MEDITATION CIRCLE Wednesday, December 9, 5:30-6:30 PM

Focus: Increasing Our Joyfulness and Positive Energy

As we move into winter, hours of daylight decrease and cold and darkness increase. Many people find that this seasonal change affects their mood and energy level, making them feel less enthusiastic, more lethargic and more irritable. Seasonal Affective Disorder (or SAD)

is an intense form of these manifestations.

Almost instinctively, we long for Light and Warmth. Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Light and Freedom, a joyous holiday, falls at this time of year when we are most in need of Light and Warmth and Joy.

Our Jewish traditions and practices give us many tools for increasing joyful feelings, for tapping into enthusiasm, and for dispelling Doom and Gloom thinking styles.

Come and experience the warm, relaxed ambiance of the SHALOM MEDITATION CIRCLE as we practice tools for INCREASING our JOYFULNESS and POSITIVE ENERGY (Ruach), including chanting and singing Hebrew melodies and songs accompanied by Abe Barnetts spirited guitar playing; visualization; Breathwork and Qi Gong (Moving Energy) led by Dr. Robert Fried (Bob).

There is no charge for the sessions. All are welcome. You do not have to be a Temple member to participate. No previous experience is required. Please arrive on time and wear comfortable clothing.

Visas of Life and the Epic Journey

Akira Kitade was born in Japan in 1944. He graduated from Keio University with a degree in French Literature, and went to work for the Japan National Touist Organization. After years of research on the Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, Mr. Kitade published

his book in 2012. While conducting interviews with survivors in the United States, Mr. Kitade managed to locate one of the Jews in a photograph at the Japanese Tourist Bureau of Sugiharas Jews. Emma Goldin Lutz, our wonderful Student Cantor, will be presenting her Senior Recital on Wednesday, December 2, at

10:45 AM, at the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music at the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, 1 West 4th Street in Manhattan (between Broadway and Mercer). The theme will be French-Jewish Song. The music will range from pieces of the 19th-century Paris synagogue to songs written for French songstress Edith Piaf by Jewish composers. (Because of the security at the door, it is advised that you arrive by 10:30.)

Happy Chanukah!

Brotherhood and Sisterhood will join in a Havdalah service on Saturday evening, December 5, at 5:00.

Afterward, we will go to the Brooklyn Museum for the free First Saturday program of music and art.

There are always performers, gallery talks and exhibits, films and other activities at the museums First

Saturday events. Come with us and enjoy it.

I will be leading a book discussion on Sunday morning, January 24, at 10:00, about A Backpack, A Bear,

and Eight Crates of Vodka by Lev Golinkin. The author wrote about growing up Jewish in the former

Soviet Union, his familys difficult journey from there to Brooklyn when he was nine and the Soviet Union was nearing its end, and adjusting to his new life in America. In the end, youll see that the book tells the

story of a Jewish journey in more ways than one. And well have coffee and bagels, of course.

Colonel David Mickey Marcus was a Jewish-American military officer, lawyer, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Correction, commander of the fledgling Israeli

Defense Forces during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war and a member of Union Temple.

Cast A Giant Shadow tells the story of Colonel Marcuss efforts to prepare Israeli troops to defend the newly declared state against the invasion of its Arab neighbors. Many of the soldiers under his command, newly arrived in Israel, were determined and enthusiastic, but untrained. The cast includes Kirk Douglas as Colonel Marcus, Yul Brynner, John Wayne, Michael Douglas, Angie Dickinson and Frank Sinatra.
