2 NEWSBREAK DECEMBER 2016

MARK’S MESSAGEAs you walk through the halls of Anna Jaques you can feel the holidays in the air. Departments have decorated with trees and wreaths throughout the hospital, annual events like the Aid Association’s Tree of Light and the Employee Craft Fair help get us in the spirit. More than 800 employees and their families gathered for Anna Jaques Night at the Sea Festival of Trees. Every year I enjoy standing in line with your kids as they excitedly wait to meet Santa. A highlight for me was with a brother/sister duo – I asked the 8-year-old brother to practice with me what he was going to ask Santa for this year. He confidently denied my request because he was already prepared. He got up to meet Santa and said he wanted a “keep out” sign for his room so his sister leave him alone! The event was also extra special this year, thanks to the incredible creativity shown by employees in making our “Elf on the Shelf” tree – which placed Gold in the “Spirit of Giving” category. The spirit of giving and proud sense of community is at the heart of what makes Anna

Jaques special. Our employees give back in so many ways. In the last month alone, the hospital donated 80 turkeys to the Pettengill House from employees opting to donate their Thanksgiving gift to support others in need. Operations Manager of the Nutrition Department Alan Bythewood and the Cafeteria staff once again supported the efforts of the Newburyport Lions Club by cooking 20+ turkeys for their annual Thanksgiving community dinner. And Teddy Maitland in Facilities has been spotted around the hospital singing carols to coworkers and visitors. (See pg. 6 for more ways to give back).

On behalf of the senior team and the Board of Trustees, we thank you for all that you do and wish you and your family a happy, healthy holiday. I look forward to a great 2017 at Anna Jaques.

Harley Edwards, a second-grader at Penn Brook School in Georgetown, recently was waiting at a local medical center while her brother was treated after an accident. She noticed that therewasn’tmuchforyoungsterstodowhilewaiting.Whenitcametimeforherbirthdayinmid-November, Harley asked for donations of coloring books in lieu of birthday presents to donate to Anna Jaques.

On December 6th, Harley and her family brought crayons, coloring books, reading material and small toys to the hospital that she had collected.

“This hospital is more than a century old, and I don’t know that anyone ever thought of this ideatoofferplaythingsforkidsneartheemergencyroom,”saidMarkGoldstein,President&CEO.“Wethankyou,andwe’llmakesuretheyarereplacedaftertheyareused.” Harley said, “Instead of getting scared about a surgery or a problem with someone in the family, I thought the kids could color. It would take their minds off what was happening while they wait.”

NEWSBREAK DECEMBER 2016 3

The Daily News of Newburyport prints an annual multi-story special during the week of Thanksgiving that looks at “new immigrants” who have settled in this area. In years past, the paper has featured many Anna Jaques employees, physicians and supporters. This year, Simon Faynzilberg, MD, Director of the Anna Jaques Hospital Comprehensive Pain Center, shared his story of moving to America from Russia in 1991 and the challenges and opportunity that followed. (Excerpt below as printed in the Daily News)…

“The changes in coming to this country were great,” said Faynzilberg, now a doctor and pain clinic director at Anna Jaques Hospital. “The environment was so different in Silicon Valley where I started: no rain, no snow, no city center….

The doctor, married with two children, said he is pleased with his work at Anna Jaques, a 123-bed facility that is associated with Beth Israel Deaconess.

“I like the feel of a community hospital better than that of the big academic hospitals (which operate in Boston),” he said. “It is good to work on a team here.”

Aid President Mary Ann Abbott, Community Health Foundation President Ralph Castagna, and Mark Goldstein welcomed attendees at the Highland Avenue front porch and together lit the Blue Spruce tree with each light shining in honor of the 580 names included on the scroll. Following the tree lighting, people gathered over hot chocolate and treats to enjoy holiday music by the Georgetown First Congregational Church Bell Ringers and the Newburyport Children’s Choir.

Thank you to longtime supporter and sponsor of the Tree of Light, North Shore Bank. To view the 2016 Tree of Light Scroll, visit www.ajh.org/aidassociation.

“I was in surgical day care to have knee surgery by Dr. Chang. I just want to say that this was the best hospital experience I have had. Every single person I met from the moment I was greeted to the moment I left... all the wonderful doctors nurses, anesthesiologist and just everybody was absolutely wonderful and made a nerve-wracking experience so much better for me.
