The Cafeteria hallways were bustling more than usual this month as the Gift Shop Manager

Susan Dixon set up a temporary shop out of her storage space while the Gift Shop underwent

long-awaited renovations. The prospect of having the Gift Shop closed for several weeks was

simply unthinkable to Susan, so she got creative. She and several of the Gift Shop Volunteers

offered a variety of staple items, sharing a laugh with staff while they sold candy, a newspaper

or slipper socks.

For those who know Susan, her determination to continue to serve our patients, families and

employees during construction is not at all surprising. In fact, it is a hallmark of the people who

are attracted to Anna Jaques to work and volunteer.

Another group of volunteers recently spent half-a-day with us at a AJH Community Health

Foundation Board Retreat. This volunteer Board, which is made up of local business and

community leaders, learned more about the healthcare philanthropy landscape, as well as

the role that all members of the organization play in advancing a culture of philanthropy.

Through their work in raising money for our Foundation, we are able to fund critical projects,

technology and equipment to enhance the care we provide to patients.

The spirit of volunteerism is so strong at our hospital, and we are fortunate to have the

unwavering support of so many special people from our community. We simply could not do

what we do without them.

On January 25th the Anna Jaques community lost a longtime colleague and dear friend with the sudden passing of

Chuck Burrill. Chuck was a deeply valued member of the Housekeeping team and Anna Jaques for 18 years. He was well-

known throughout the hospital for his constant smile, sense of humor, and big heart.

Rob Kotarba, Director of Environmental Services, led the hospital in a moment of silence on January 31st and organized a

small gathering of employees to share stories and celebrate their friend.

Our prayers continue to be with Chuck’s family and friends throughout the hospital as we all process this loss. Plans to

honor Chuck in a meaningful way at the hospital are also being planned.

Friends & colleagues shared:

• A wonderful and kind man who always wore a big smile

• Truly one of the best at AJH

• Amazing friend and a hard worker who loved his job

• Chuck greeted everyone with a smile on his face

• Such a hard worker and kind person - always a smile on his face

Liz Stratton, RN, oncology nurse at the Anna Jaques Cancer Center affiliated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center,

met Nancy Burke as a patient undergoing chemotherapy. Their mutual connection to Haverhill High School came up

in conversation during treatments where Liz’s plan to help support Nancy through the Blackout for Cancer Fundraiser

was born. On February 5th, the Haverhill High School boys and girls basketball teams – with support from Liz, a chief

organizer of the booster club - hosted the Blackout for Cancer Fundraiser to benefit members of their high school

community affected by cancer, paraprofessional Nancy Burke and high school senior Madison Copeland.

The event raised $2,500 and received an overwhelming community response. Liz shared with the Eagle Tribune: “I got

a lot of private responses and people came up to me, really just saying that this was very touching and moving, and it

gave me hope that people become more aware, and go for their checkups.”

With the creation of the new Comprehensive Pain Center, strong clinical leadership is critical to its success, and Shannon’s track record in the day-to-day management of the Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center makes her a terrific choice to lead both service lines.

Shannon has also provided interim clinical oversight and assistance to the Pain Center over the last several months and her leadership, initiative, and enthusiasm has been recognized by the providers and Pain Center staff.

Dr. Quiel joined New England Inpatient Specialists as the Associate Medical Director of the AJH Hospitalist Program. His areas of interest include health care policy, clinical research, utilization management and quality and patient safety. Renovation is complete and open for business. The

Gift Shop now features new lighting, hardware,

flooring, and furniture. The updated space will

enable the Gift Shop team to better run the shop

and introduce new merchandise.

The Anna Jaques community certainly missed the

Gift Shop while it was closed – though it continued

to operate out of its storage space in the Cafeteria

hallway. A special thank you to Susan Dixon, Gift

Shop Manager, for leading the charge on this

exciting project.

QWe’re in constant need of yellow socks, yellow name bands, and yellow door signs for our fall risk patients on the floors. Could the Storeroom automatically replenish these items like they do our other supplies? Also, can we stock the precaution carts with plastic bags to wrap meal trays in as well as larger plastic bags for the trash in patient’s precaution rooms? It’s a constant need.

Housekeeping will provide Transport with the bags for the precaution carts. The Storeroom will ensure that there are additional yellow socks and bracelets kept in the nursing supply rooms. Transport is working on making “Falls Kits” that have all of the identified items needed and will make sure that there are plenty available.

A

Q I asked Santa for a vital sign machine for the Arakelian as there is only one. I also asked him for new chairs, many do not function and look like they have been nibbled on by reindeer.

Eight new chairs have been ordered for the Arakelian Unit slated to arrive in late February. We will evaluate the performance of the three vital signs machines stationed on the Arakelian Unit and ensure that they are all functioning to their full capacity. The vital signs machines that are not functioning properly will replaced or repaired.

Q & A w i t h t h e P r e s i d e n t - M o x B o x

Q There are many broken bed/chair alarms on the Newburyport Five Cents Savings Inpatient Unit and we were told there are none available.

All inpatient Medical/Surgical and Newburyport Five Cents Savings Unit rooms now have room-specific chair alarms installed. This is in addition to the bed alarms that exist within our Stryker bed system. Staff education was provided on the inpatient units. Transport has additional alarms available, if needed.

A

QI noticed that Transport drops patients off then puts the wheelchair back in the area for the next patient without disinfecting it. Since we have many patients with contagious infections spread by contact this practice needs to be reevaluated. I would like to see gloves and disinfecting wipes either on the wheelchairs or at the stations where they are stored in each department.

It is standard policy to clean all wheelchairs in the Storeroom and on the floors after each patient use. An in-service was held to ensure all staff are familiar with and adhere to this policy consistently.

A

QI’ve had many patients and patients’ families ask how to connect to the Wi-Fi. I know there is a how-do document on AnnaOnline, but could we get the document printed and placed in the Admission packet or laminated and placed in their rooms?

Instructions for accessing the Wi-Fi password are printed in the Inpatient Guide that is given to all inpatients upon admission. It is also posted on our website. Please refer patients and families to the guide as needed.

Dr. Steven Mollov published Special Delivery, the third and

final installment of his book series that draws upon his 40

years of experience as an OB/GYN. Private Practice, Date of

Confinement, and Special Delivery follows the fictional story

of Dr. Joshua Barron and Dr. Alex Faber, two obstetricians

running a private practice in small town New Hampshire.

Special Delivery Synopsis: Joshua Barron and Alex Faber,

physicians practicing in Breedville, New Hampshire once again

take the reader through the day-to-day drama of the field of

obstetrics and gynecology. From life affirming saves, to the

tragedy of a maternal death, the field is intricately intertwined

into the fabric of life which we all take for granted. And as a

rogue physician induces the miscarriages of teenagers for what

he considers a noble cause, the right to play God is caught

in the crosshairs.

AJH completed a successful mock Joint Commission Survey in November.

The mock surveyors commented on the professionalism and caring

demonstrated by staff. There was also a list of opportunities for

improvement. Directors and managers will receive a detailed report and

findings to share with individual departments. Stay tuned for follow up and

more to come in 2019.

In late December, Elaine Melanson, PC, 2North, called attention to an unsightly area outside the 2North dining room

where a fence had collapsed with trash and debris outside. Within a week or so, the area was cleaned up by Facilities.

Elaine wrote a follow up letter to say, “Thank you for your prompt response to my request…it looks so much better

out there.”

To the staff of Anna Jaques Radiology Department: After half a dozen trips to Radiology, I can honestly say that your staff is amazing – always kind and patient no

matter how grouchy I was and I’m deeply grateful. I have no idea if this was pre-planned or random in all its glory

but somehow my family was selected by the department for the Community Action, Inc. Headstart Christmas Family

that you gave these kids the best Christmas ever.
