This year with Armistice Day falling

on Saturday there was just one

ceremony to mark the 11th hour of the

11th day of the 11th month. It was

good to see the large crowd who

gathered at the war memorial on

Remembrance Sunday. Every area of

the village was represented, as well as

all ages, including the village scouts,

cubs and beavers and children from

our village school whose red school

uniforms complemented well the

scarlet poppies worn by all

Lay minister Sue Holligan opened the

ceremony at the memorial with the

opening prayers and the Lord’s Prayer,

after which the hymn ‘Abide with me’

was sung. During the act of

remembrance the list of all those to be

remembered was read by the Chairman

of the Parish Council. This was

followed by the Last Post, the minute’s

silence and Reveille. The laying of the

wreaths, on behalf of various village

groups followed.

During the singing of ‘He who would

valiant be’ a collection was taken for

the British Legion Poppy Appeal.

After this those present retired to the

church for the church service.

After the lighting of

the Peace candle the

service in church

opened with the

singing of the hymn ‘O God our help

in ages past’. This was followed by

the reading from Thessalonians. The

sermon was given by Mr Sam Barnes,

who as a Methodist Local Preacher, is

well known in the village to both

adults and also to the children who

attend ‘Messy Church’. The prayers of

intercession remembered all those

suffering as a result of conflict, asking

God to give us peace. David Pepperell

read the familiar but no less moving

Kohima Epitaph:

When you go home

Tell them of us and say,

For your tomorrow

We gave our today.

The service closed with the singing of

the National Anthem.

The next day the children in school

held their own Remembrance service,

including laying the wreath at the

memorial.

Jo Finch

We will remember them

Advent ‘Prayer Tree’ During Advent, there will be a ‘Prayer Tree’ in the South Aisle of the church,

for use by us all. To use it, write a prayer on one of the shapes provided, and

hang it on the tree. Prayers can be for ourselves, family, friends or the world.

What would you like to say to God? What does he want to say to you? The

prayer shapes will be gathered and used by the monthly prayer group that meets

in the parish, next time it meets.

The successful season of Somborne

Sessions continues. November saw us

host a great night with incredibly

talented duo, Phillip Henry and

Hannah Martin: Edgelarks.

With barely a pause for breath we’re

gearing for our next event – Sam Kelly

and the Lost Boys.

With an

intoxicating mix of

youthful exuberance

and instrumental

virtuosity, Sam

Kelly & The Lost

Boys breathe new

life into traditional

music, letting it rub

shoulders with

contemporary

originals and even

the occasional

surprise rock cover.

Chosen by Cambridge Folk Festival as

the pick of the 2016 event, they have

quickly become one of the most in-

demand bands on the UK festival

scene.

The gig is on 2 December, as always

the doors open at 7:30pm, we have a

well-stocked bar, and tickets are on

sale now at

www.sombornesessions.co.uk

priced £15 (or at the door on the day

for £17 – if available).

Our website also has details of our gigs

into 2018.

For all budding flower arrangers or

flower enthusiasts I invite you to come

and help make the church Christmas

decorations with us. We make the

window-ledge arrangements and small

posies for the pew ends during the

morning. All very simple and made

entirely of mixed evergreen garden

foliage so no skills needed only

enthusiasm. This is done at my home

where it is cosy and the next morning

we place everything in position in the

church.

I would like more help on the Friday at

the Church. It is just fiddly and time

consuming putting things in place. The

candles placed around and some ivy

twisted here and there. Nothing

energetic but fun.

Thursday 14th December 9 . 3 0 a m

arranging at my home

Friday 15th December 9.30am at the

Church to place all in position.

Please give what time you can as every

little helps and the more people we

have the sooner it is done. Two

mornings would be great but if you can

only do one or part of one that will be

much appreciated.

Parish Council notes November 2017

Mr Dyke (Open Spaces Warden) and

11 members of the public were present

for part of the meeting.

Mr B Jezeph gave a short presentation

on proposals to date to develop land at

Spencer’s Farm. He outlined possible

highway access and sewage problems

which were being addressed and

confirmed only pedestrian access was

possible from Winchester Road. An

ecology review was in hand for the

lower half of the land in question on

which between 11 and 14 houses, 4 of

which would be affordable, were

proposed at this time. The land owner

would have preferred a higher number

of dwellings to help offset the

infrastructure costs but had accepted

the wishes of the community on

development sizes as contained in the

draft neighbourhood development

plan. He opined that self-build would

be acceptable to the land owner and

that a formal planning application was

being prepared.

Other members of the public present

expressed their serious concern at the

apparent willingness of the Aster

Housing Group to sell off empty

properties on the open market to the

detriment to those on the waiting list

for affordable homes. The Chairman

explained that the Parish Council was

not a party to the decision making

process in this matter as Aster was a

private company. However, the Clerk

would write to Aster conveying these

misgivings.

B/Cllr Ward had provided a written

report which covered the Strategic

Housing and Economic Land

Availability Assessment (SHELAA)

review which had just been completed

by TVBC covering those sites which

had been proposed by their owners for

housing and development in the

Borough. Each promoted site would

now be assessed to determine if it was

suitable, available and achievable and

KSPC would receive a list of these

sites in due course. Also, the report

drew attention to the current

consultation on the Parliamentary

Constituency Boundary Review which

would end on 11 December 2017 and

any public comments should be

submitted by then.

Councillors noted with regret the

resignation of Mr Colin Matthews as

the volunteer Parish Tree Warden and

thanked him for his efforts over the

years and the advice he had given. A

new volunteer Tree Warden is now

required. Please contact the Clerk for

Thank you to all those collectors who

I have, however,

Rumpelstiltskin is a magical troll who

has romantic designs on Annie, the

beautiful daughter of dressmaker

Gertie Gusset, who is already

betrothed to Scottish soap star ‘George

Mclooney’.

See how he hatches a wicked plan,

with his two idiot henchman Sniff and

Scratch, so that Annie is imprisoned by

the King and Queen and set the

impossible task of spinning straw into

gold, if she is to regain her freedom.

But then Rumpelstiltskin appears and

offers to do the job for her, in return

for her promise to give him anything

he wants. What he wants is to marry

Annie, and when she refuses she is

kidnapped and taken to his castle.

Watch how the quest to find Annie and

return her to prison follows, led by the

Kings assistant, Dogsbody, who is as

his name suggests.

Somborne and District

Society The second talk in October was about

another aspect of the New Forest;

Catherine Glover talked about political

shenanigans in the 19th Century. In

1883, Sir William Harcourt MP was

granted a 99-year lease from the

Crown in the New Forest under

questionable circumstances for an

annual rent of £100. Up to that time

the usual term of a lease was 31 years.

Questions were asked but Sir William

managed to get away with it. Nothing

like that happens nowadays of course.

November’s talk about Flying Boats

was given by Colin van Geffen. Colin

is an aviation enthusiast and was part-

time Custodian at Calshot castle. As a

youngster, I can remember watching

the flying boats landing and taking off

near the castle.

If you haven’t yet made your menu

choices for the Christmas dinner,

please call John Green on 388353 so

that you don’t miss out.

The next event will be the New Year

lunch at Keats restaurant on 11th

January by which time the Christmas

festivities will be a distant memory.

After that, the talk on 24th January

will be about the heroic diver who

rescued Winchester Cathedral’s

foundations. Our speaker will be

David Farthing.

A final plea for the owner of a dark

green sweater that was left behind at

the picnic. If nobody claims it, I’m

sure that Oxfam will be happy to add it

to their stock

David St.John

Despite the nights well and truly

drawing in there was a good turn out

for our November meeting and we

welcomed five new guests to swell the

numbers of those attending. Samantha

Boot made brief announcements

before the speaker for the night was

introduced: Hannah Anderson from

Alex Kelly Ltd at The Speaking Space

in Romsey who spoke to us about the

spoken sign language ‘Makaton’.

Hannah started off by explaining about

what Makaton signing is and how it

can help all sorts of people

communicate: from toddlers to people

with learning difficulties. She went on

to describe how she came up with the

idea of making Romsey the first

Makaton friendly town in the UK and

her determination and passion for

making this dream a reality.

We learnt about the independence it

gives people who have previously

struggled to make themselves

understood: to confidently walk into a

cafe, shop or public building in

Romsey and ask for something

themselves –

and get it!

Hannah

added many

heart-warming anecdotes to illustrate

this, and taught us some Sisterhood-

inspired signs along the way. Now if

you come to one of our meetings we

can sign a greeting and you can sign

for tea, chocolate cake or wine, and we

will understand and get it for you!

Hannah ended her talk by answering

questions from the floor before glasses

were filled and the raffle was drawn

and the meeting closed.

Next meeting – Friday 1st December

2017, 8.00pm, King’s Somborne

Village Hall when we will be making

simple homemade Christmas gifts with

the help of the Sisterhood Craft Club.

Guests £5.

is held on the first and third Tuesday

of each month, this should of course be

the first and third THURSDAY of

each month. To anybody who turned

up on a Tuesday to find just the

preschool in session, I offer my sincere

apologies.

At the October Management meeting it

was agreed to update the Village Hall

Constitution. The current constitution

dates back to 1955 when the Farmers

Club donated the Hall to a group of

villagers who represented regular users

of the Hall. This is basically a

conveyance of ownership of the

freehold title on which our charity

status is based and registered with the

Charity Commission. We have been

advised that it will be in our interest to

become a Charitable Incorporated

Organisation, CIO. There are many

benefits in changing, one of which will

be to limit the liability of the Trustees:

the members of the Management

Committee. We will be taking

professional advice to ensure

everything is set up correctly and then

the change will need to be approved by

a public meeting. I am advised the

procedures will take several months

but I hope we may be able to ask for

this approval at the next AGM. I will

keep you updated of progress via this

monthly news bulletin.

Some of you will have noticed how

smart the Jubilee Room appears for

which I thank Polyann Monk and John

Ingleson for all their recent hard work

in giving the room a complete

makeover. I have to also thank Andy

Gannaway, who, together with several

members of the football club, have

already prepared the pavilion floor for

treatment with a special resin based

paint. However before treating the

floor they volunteered to give the

whole pavilion a makeover which they

have already started. In addition it has

been agreed that the entrance hall,

committee room and toilets will all be

repainted and this will be completed

before Christmas. We will have an

even more splendid Hall to look

forward to in the New Year.

Finally may I thank all of you who

have used and supported the Hall in

the past year and take this opportunity

to wish you all a very merry Christmas

and a prosperous 2018.

King’s Somborne WI The meeting held on Wednesday, 8

November was chaired by our Vice-

President, Nola Macintosh, in the

absence of our President Sarah

Pennington, who was celebrating her

10th Wedding Anniversary with her

husband in St Lucia. Warm

congratulations were expressed to

them both.

Back in King's Somborne, walks had

continued in relatively mild weather,

the main hazard being the odd slippery

section on some routes. The Book

Club had met in rather depleted

numbers and it was agreed that there

would be a discussion in January to

decide whether to continue, perhaps

with a late morning or afternoon

meeting time.

Unfortunately the expected speaker for

the Group Meeting had had to cry off

at short notice However, our HCFWI

Chairman, Maureen Levenson, stepped

into the breach with a heart-warming

description of the good work being

done by the WI's ACWW organisation

which supports village women in

developing countries.. There was a

suggestion that KSWI might produce a

cookery book, possibly in tandem with

the Somborne

Sisterhood.

Our speaker

was Mrs. Valerie (Val) Dubbin. Val,

who has taught needlework for many

years and is a long-term patchwork

quilt enthusiast and maker, now runs

Adaliza, an enterprise specialising in

making and teaching patchwork. She

spoke to us surrounded by a great bevy

of brilliantly coloured and patterned

quilts which she had created and

showed us slides of the large and well-

equipped studio she works from at her

home in Winchester, where she will be

holding an Open Studio on 26

November. We were left feeling

inspired and daunted in equal measure.

Our next meeting will be on 13

December, at 7.30pm in the Village

Hall, when our speaker on “A Sprinkle

at Christmas” will be Trisha Lewis.

We shall also be holding our

Christmas Party that evening and

members are asked to bring a sweet or

savoury contribution, together with a

wrapped Christmas present costing

between £3 and £5 for the Bran Tub.

At our October meeting, we welcomed

Sally, the Deputy Manager at BOAZ,

who was accompanied by her husband

Gil (for technical support!). She

showed us a PowerPoint presentation

do when they spend time there. These

include crafts, gardening, cooking,

disabilities who have finished full time

education.

Sally brought along some goods for

sale including bags, bird boxes, jams

and chutneys, eggs from the hens and

homemade cards.

This was all rounded off as usual by a

cup of tea and a slice of Marilyn’s

delicious cake!

Throughout November, there have

been a lot of occasions to learn about

here at Tiny Tots. We began the half

term thinking about the excitement of

fireworks day and made some

explosive paintings as well as very

popular ‘sparklers’ made from

chocolate fingers and edible glitter!

The children also marked the occasion

of Remembrance Day by watching a

short film introducing them to the

concept and by making some beautiful

paper plate poppies. We have now

begun to turn our attention to the end

of the year and are learning about the

season of Winter and animals who

hibernate.

As we move into December, all

thoughts turn to Christmas! We have

some beautiful crafts to make to

complement our retelling of the

Christmas Story and will end the term

with our Christmas party at the church

on Tuesday 19th

December. All

are very welcome, even if you have

not joined us before. We will start

back after Christmas on Tuesday 9th

January.

It is always good to see new faces so if

you fancy joining us you can be sure

of a warm welcome. We meet each

Tuesday afternoon in term time,

starting each session at 2.00pm with a

drink and biscuit (for adults as well as

children)! We then enjoy a story and

fun activity together, followed by

crafts and end by 3.15pm (in time for

school pick-up) with songs and music.

If you find your children are napping

at 2.00pm, you are very welcome to

join us mid-session. It would be really

great to see you and your children

there!

The Harvest Festival at Ashley was

held on Sunday 29th October and it

was a very successful service. The

congregation numbered over 30 people

and what made it such a pleasant event

was that not only did many long-term

residents attend, but we also had an

opportunity to chat with newcomers to

the village as well as our regulars from

King’s Somborne. The church was

beautifully decorated, the harmonium

behaved itself and Howard Rowe

conducted the service in a very relaxed

b u t

meaningful

m a n n e r .

Thank you

to everybody who contributed to

making the Festival so memorable.

The next event at Ashley St Mary will

be the Carol Concert on Tuesday 12th

December at 7.30pm. This will be led

as usual by the Somborne Singers and

Claire Marsden is arranging for village

children to give the readings, so it

should be a fun evening.

Would you note that the Christmas

Day service this year will start at

11.00am which is slightly earlier

than last year and it means that

families will be able to get home for

lunch without too much of a rush.

On behalf of the Friends of Ashley

The Minister has a last word The season of Christmas and New Year is upon us once more. Advent is a time

of waiting, of preparation, of eagerly looking forward to celebrating the birth of

Christ. I was struck by what our licensed lay minister Howard Rowe wrote in

November’s issue about the need to remember in the middle of the busyness of

our preparations for Christmas those for whom Christmas may well be a

particularly difficult time.

Christmas is first and foremost about the incarnation. This means that Christians

believe God, the Creator of the universe took on human flesh and was born as a

tiny baby to live amongst us as one of us. It’s so special, so astonishing if you

take a moment to really think about it.

Let’s remember though that Christ was born into poverty and not placed to sleep

in a warm, cosy cot but in a dirty, smelly animal’s feeding trough. Throughout

his life Jesus understood what it meant to have little in the way of material

wealth.

New research from the Institute for Fiscal studies predicts an increase of more

than a million in the number of children living in poverty in Britain in the next

five years as a result of universal credit and less generous tax credits. The

steepest increases are likely to be in the most deprived parts of the country.

On 6th November the Archbishop of Canterbury posted comments on social

media in which he said that figures on foodbank use in Britain today are utterly

shocking with many households just one crisis away from needing assistance of

this kind. He called on those who have plenty to give generously, to campaign

for change and to show compassion towards others in need.

So, what do I really want for Christmas this year?

What do you really want for Christmas this year?

Personally speaking I’m so looking forward to spending Christmas with my

family once again in the beautiful surroundings of leafy Hampshire. I do hope,

however, that I will also take time to remember that Christ was born not just for

the privileged few like me but for all people and perhaps most especially for

those for whom life at this moment in time and through no fault of their own is

particularly tough.

Into the forgotten places, as into the stable may Christ’s birth bring hope into the

lives of those who are struggling to make ends meet, caution into the lives of

those who hold the most power, rest into the lives of the weary, but most of all

peace and joy to the whole world.

Wishing you all a joyful and peaceful Christmas and a very happy new year.

Love and prayers,

Rev Dawn Fry

The Lay Minister has the last word Imagine that you’re visiting Earth from a far galaxy, where Christmas doesn’t

exist. You sense excitement, and ask a human to explain, in just a few words,

what Christmas is about.

“It’s on December 25th” says the human. “Winter time. It’s cold outside, so we

wear Christmas jumpers, and have log fires. We hang stockings round the

chimney, because that’s where Father Christmas leaves presents. The children

get very excited! We decorate the house and have Christmas cards, and holly and

mistletoe. Of course, it all started with a baby called Jesus, born in a village

called Bethlehem long ago. According to the story there were shepherds and

wise men and camels and a star. People go to church and sing Christmas carols

about it all. And we have turkey to eat and mulled wine and Christmas pud. And

families all get together to celebrate and watch the Queen on the telly”.

“Have I explained it OK?” says the human…

There is a way to tell what Christmas is all about in just 3 words. ‘God with us’.

‘Immanuel’ – it’s one of the names for Jesus in the Bible.

Because Christmas isn’t really something we do, it’s something God does. We’re

not the random result of a cosmic accident, but God’s intentional creation. God

yearns for us. He’s thrilled when we do things well, and saddened when we

don’t. And he cares so much, he wants to share our life and world. Christmas is

God deciding to become a human, as a baby. ‘God with us’. Growing with us,

living with us, suffering with us, dying with us.

So God invented Christmas. Not warmth and presents and turkeys, but homeless,

the child of a young single woman in a strange place away from her family; an

uncertain future, cold, in poverty and danger. ‘God with us’.

Let’s thank God for all that a modern Christmas means. Let’s pray for those who

are without a home, in a place they don’t want to be, without family, hungry,

cold, or in danger. Let’s say “thank you, God, for being ‘God with us’”.

I wish you ‘God with us’ this Christmas and for all the new year.

In celebration of the 175th Anniversary of the founding of King’s

Somborne School in October 1842

“Richard Dawes—Family, Friends and legacy”

by Norman Denison

This new book tells the story of the School Founder’s origins in the Dales of Yorkshire and his own schooling and further education before his wedding to Mary and their arrival in King’s Somborne.

The surprising details of Mary’s early life after her birth in what is now Prince Edward Island, Canada and before her marriage are also included.

The late Cyril Pigott wrote so knowledgeably about Dawes’ founding of the School and took part in the 150th Anniversary celebrations so the majority of his Chapter from “Celebrating Somborne” is included with but minor additions.

Because of his undoubted success in starting our still great School Dawes was selected by the Prime Minister of the day to become Dean of Hereford. He went on to distinguish himself there by overseeing the restoration of the Cathedral whilst enjoying old and making new friendships and continuing to give help and advice to local schools.

The book is available from the author, Somborne Society

Committee members or at one of the Society’s monthly meetings.
