An outstanding church school –
King’s Somborne C of E Primary School As we start the new school year, we
are delighted to be able to share the
news that King’s Somborne C of E
Primary school has been assessed as
being an outstanding school under the
Statutory Inspection of Anglican
Schools (SIAS).
Schools which are affiliated to the
church (voluntary aided or controlled)
have an SIAS inspection in addition to
the OfSTED Inspection which applies
to all state schools.
The SIAS inspection evaluates the
school in three key areas:
The degree to which the school,
through its distinctive Christian
character, meets the needs of all
learners.
The impact of collective worship
on the school community
The effectiveness of leadership and
management of the school as a
church school.
In all of these areas the school was
rated as outstanding.
Particular strengths identified in the
report included:
The Christian values of the school
being manifested in an atmosphere
of calmness, caring, respectfulness
and aspiration
The deeply embedded Christian
values which all can understand
regardless of faith (Christian, other
or no faith)
The school’s vision which
celebrates the uniqueness of each
child and ensures pupils have
opportunities to develop socially,
spiritually and academically
The school’s inclusivity: where
each learner is seen as a unique
individual who is nurtured,
encouraged and challenged to do
their very best
The exemplary behaviour of
learners.
The areas identified for development
were:
T o e n h a n c e t h e p l a n n e d
opportunities for learners to
explore and learn about other
cultures and faiths
For the school governors to plan
and work for the continuation and
development of these Christian
values through the period of
leadership change within the
school.
Regardless of one’s own personal faith
and belief, the SIAS report provides us
with a valuable external assessment of
the school’s ethos, its values and the
environment within which our children
are helped to learn and develop.
King’s Somborne school has a rich
history as an inclusive school financed
by the community for the benefit of the
community. The SIAS report confirms
that the school has stayed true to these
principles and that these principles
help every child achieve their best.

DIOCESE OF WINCHESTER
A Service to Celebrate the formation of the Test Valley Benefice and the
handing over of the licence to Rev Jonathan Watkins
will be held on
Thursday 11th October
at 7.30pm
in the Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, King’s Somborne
All residents in the parishes of Somborne with Ashley, Leckford, Longstock and Stockbridge are invited to come and celebrate in the presence of
The Right Reverend Jonathan Frost Bishop of Southampton
Our monthly meals for the Winchester
Nightshelter have now been running
for a year. We have a good group of
twenty four cooks, two of whom are
from Stockbridge, who work in pairs
providing a meal for twenty people.
This is very much appreciated.
It has been decided that our Harvest
Thanksgiving gifts should be given to
the Nightshelter. On page 8, there is a
list of items which they suggest would
be most useful to them.

Ride and Stride 2012 It is now time to acknowledge and
thank all the people who helped the
Somborne contingent perform so well
towards the “Going for Gold” target
which was set. At this moment we still
have to “wait and see” exactly how we
matched up against the other
participating churches, but our effort
has been glorious! We have certainly
succeeded in raising over £1,500 plus
Gift Aid tax returns to be split equally
between the Hampshire and the Islands
Historic Churches Trust and our own
churches.
The Sombornes provided four riders
and five striders (including one dog!)
who visited various local churches
during the day. We were superbly
supported by a goodly number of
generous sponsors. All the churches in
the Parish were open and provided
refreshments for visiting participants.
The Methodist and Parish churches
were manned and provided a warm
welcome to visitors. Sadly, despite the
wonderful weather not so many came
to visit us.
Thank you to all concerned.

It has been an excellent start to the season for the Football
Club. Pre-season friendlies produced the usual mixed
bunch of results, the best game being the Dave McLoughlin
Memorial Cup where we narrowly lost to rivals Broughton.
The Andover League now starts the season with a 6-a-side
tournament for all clubs. We came away with the Plate Shield, beating
Broughton in the final, gaining a certain amount of revenge. The team have gone
on to win the first two games of the league season, away at Sutton Scotney 2-0,
and home to Andover Lions Res 4-1

After a quiet summer, the Hall is again
springing to life with the resumption of
our regular bookings and a new term
for the pre-school.
We have submitted applications to
TVBC and HCC for grants to enable
us to begin the next phase of
refurbishment which is to improve the
entrance hall. We hope to hear the
results of these applications in mid-
October. If they are successful, work
should begin shortly thereafter. We
will then start planning for the long
awaited upgrading of the main hall!
A reminder once again to our hirers
that, when they book the main hall, if
they also wish to use the Jubilee room
or committee room there will be an
extra charge of £3 per hour for each of
those rooms.
People using the Hall may have
noticed that there is a subsidence in the
car park near the main entrance. This
has come about because a tree root had
displaced the main foul drain leading
from the Hall. This has been repaired
but, because there is a slope in the car
park, rainwater is continuing to soak
into that area and may cause further
subsidence. The only permanent
repair will be to replace a large area of
tarmac. This will be expensive. At
present, we are keeping a watching
brief and will take action if necessary
Finally, I would like to thank
customers of the Cross Stores and of
the Crown Inn for their generous
donations to our development fund.
Support from the community means a
great deal when we approach local
authorities for help, so thank you very
much!
The next meeting of the VHMC will
be on Thursday 4th October.

TREASURER, CAN YOU HELP?

Village Hall news
Owing to the generosity of our
County Councillor, Andrew Gibson,
two table tennis tables have been
purchased for the use by the
parishioners. During the summer, a
total of about 15 persons, young and
old, beginners and old hands, enjoyed
games between 11.00am and noon on
Sunday mornings. A charge of £1 per
player per session has to be charged to
cover the cost of hiring the Village
Hall.
Sessions were suspended during the
principal holiday period, but will start
again on Sunday 23rd September. All
parishioners aged 12 and over are
welcome. Just come along and bring
a bat if you have one.

The Friends of the
Parish Church held
a very successful
tennis tournament
on Sunday 2
September.
N e a r l y 4 0
competitors played
on five courts. We
are very grateful to
t h e M a r s d e n ,
Horsey, Fowler,
Dumas and Monk
families, who made
t h e i r c o u r t s
available. The
finals were held on
the Dumas’ court and were followed
by a cream tea for everyone. Thanks
also go to all who contributed or
helped with lunches and teas.
In the final, age and experience lost
out to youth and the winners were Tom
and Emily Monk.
The event raised nearly £800 and we
hope to build on that next year with
still more players.
Friends’ tennis tournament
The finalists
The last two matches of this abysmal
summer were played against Roke C C
and Wherwell C C. Roke moved
quickly to 26 off the first four overs,
before Jake Batchelor bowled their
number one. Number two retired on
26 and three wickets quickly followed
with a run out, a wicket for Phil
Pidgeon in his first over and a duck
induced by Charles Buckley. The next
two batsman recovered the situation ,
scoring 28 (retired) and 22 (not out),
with number eight not out on 13, to
produce a total
of 121 in the
allotted 18
overs. King’s
Somborne went
off at a gallop,
with Matt Martin, Sam Sherfield and
John Monger (one six) all retiring on
25+. Phil Pidgeon finished off the
opposition with 26 runs including two
fours off the last over.

In the last match, Wherwell batted first
and the openers went off at a great rate
hitting 42 off the first four overs. Ben
Sherfield got his revenge for being hit
for six by immediately inducing one of
them to hit a skyer that Phil Pidgeon
safely pouched. Ben then caught their
number three off Sam’s bowling. Four
of their batsmen retired on 25+ and
they posted an intimidating total of
175 runs off eighteen overs for the loss
of 4 wickets. King’s Somborne
managed only 106 for the loss of 8
wickets before the game was
abandoned after sixteen overs with the
light so bad that the scrorers could not
see the umpires’ signals. Sam
Sherfield made 22, brother Ben made
18 and John Fahy made 14. It must be
admitted that Wherwell had certainly
got revenge for their defeat by King’s
Somborne at the end of the 2011
season in which no opposition batsman
got to the retirement score.

District diary for October

The Somborne
and District Society The Society`s year has started well
with the wonderful Picnic at
Chilbolton in August, two excellent
talks – on the Monarchy and on the
Fire Service’s long history – and a
fascinating September visit to Roche
Court Sculpture Garden.
We move on with the talk on 24th
October on the interesting topic: “The
Vikings – Warriors or Traders?” by Dr
Andrew Hobley which will nicely
co mplement the recen t BBC
programmes on the subject.
Members will recall that, earlier in the
year, Mary Pollock instituted a Jubilee
Project to collect photographs of the
village as it is in 2012. A number of
you have been diligently taking
pictures of your own and neighbouring
roads but there are a few gaps still. If
you feel you would like to take part
and have a camera available please
contact Mary for further details.
My thanks go to all those members
who renewed their subscriptions
promptly and to those who have done
so after an early reminder. If you have
not yet done so, please contact Linda
Aucock. And, of course, new
members are always very welcome!

Chairman (388107)
Bell Ringing news I expect everyone has noticed how
infrequently the bells have been rung
through August, a break for all!! We
have now started our regular Monday
evening practises again and hope to
ring most Sundays for the church
services. The last Monday of each
month we now go to Stockbridge for
our practise. We did manage to ring
for the Diamond Jubilee and the start
of the Olympics, with much
appreciated help from the church
wardens and Norman Denison.
In October, we have two sets of
visiting ringers coming, on 6th
(Basingstoke) and 27th (Odiham).
On the 17th the mid-monthly District
ring is coming to our church for 3/4
hour. I know that is three extra
ringing times in one month (we try to
keep it to one) but we need some
money in the kitty because the ropes
are beginning to need replacing.
There have not been many weddings
this year to help swell our funds. We
pay for a yearly maintenance check,
new ropes and stays when needed,
and in 14 years have not had to ask
the PCC for any financial assistance.
Anyone interested in learning to ring,
or just “having a go” are always
welcome. Please contact Sue
Spurling on 01794 388266.

By the time you read this, the second
season of the Somborne Sessions
should be well underway, with multi-
instrumental band Cocos Lovers
having played at the Village Hall on
22nd September.
But this was only the beginning! On
Saturday 20th October 2012, we
welcome our first jazz performers to
the Sessions. The Charlotte Glasson
Band plays an infectious brand of
World-Music-inspired jazz. As well as
Charlotte herself, the line- up features
legendary trombonist Mark Bassey. If
you want to check out in advance the
treat in store for you, go to
www.charlotteglasson.com for some
samples. The band is hot from playing
with jazz greats such as Herbie
Flowers and Chris Spedding. This is
an evening not to be missed - certainly
not just for jazz aficionados. If you’ve
ever wondered what smiles sound like,
this is it!
In November (Saturday 24th), we
return to the world of folk with Huw
Williams and Martin Allcock. Huw
wrote songs for Fairport Convention in
the eighties and nineties while Martin
played in the band. Following
successful solo careers, they have now
come back together again to perform
live as a duo. This combination will
be a treat not only for lovers of folk
but also for anyone who likes great
musicianship and a bit of a yarn about
music- making.
As usual, for both of these gigs, it’s
7.30pm for an 8.00pm start at the
Village Hall. Tickets are £10 per
person per gig if bought in advance
either via Pay Pal on the web site
(www.sombornesessions.co.uk) or
from Doug Stammers on 389192 (£12
on the door if seats still available).

the ridge and back to the village past the Beef Unit.

After the disappointment of two
cancelled sports days during the
Summer Term, King’s Somborne
School finally managed to get the
better of the weather on Wednesday 12
September when they held their Sports
Day. The children created attractive
blocks of colour on the field, dressed
in red, yellow or blue according to the
team to which they had been assigned.
From the very start, participants were
cheered on boisterously by their
schoolmates. The volume of cheering
may not have quite matched that heard
recently in London and Flushing
Meadows but its enthusiasm more than
compensated. One very impressive
aspect of the children’s performances
was the great determination shown by
the competitors: they showed true
sporting spirit by all completing the
course even after the result had been
determined. It takes more than
dropped eggs, shoes falling off and
sack tumbles to dent the determination
of these youngsters – they were a joy
to watch.
Well done
to all!
There was
variety in
the races. Obstacle races were
followed by relays, flat races and sack
races and the inevitable parents’ race, a
sack race, which was won jointly by
Mr Horsfield and Mr Campling.
There were a few anxious moments
when a slight drizzle fell on two
occasions, but the sun did put in a brief
appearance later in the afternoon. New
headteacher Mrs Way named the Red
team as the champions after which the
cup, sporting its red ribbon, was
presented to Finlay Jarvis and Alex
Lee.

The autumn term is now well
underway, with Becky and Katie really
making their mark. The layout of the
room at the start of each session has
changed a bit, which hopefully gives
the children a little more choice, makes
the most of the space we have and
feels a bit more inviting.
We will plan activities for the children
which support the seven areas of
development set out in the Early Years
Foundation Stage (EYFS) guidelines.
These are:
Communication and language
Physical development
Personal, social and emotional
development
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the world
Expressive arts and design.
With this in mind, we are looking to
improve on our existing resources.
Some fundraising events will be
required. In the meantime, if you (or
friends or family) could help us by
donating any unwanted items such as
dressing-up clothes, small diecast cars/
trains, board games, cd player,
educational computer games, small
world/imaginary toys (such as
Playmobil or dolls houses), painting
easels, we would be extremely
grateful. Please speak to us if you
think you might be able to help.
We also have a new pre-school mascot
this term . . . a very friendly, cuddly
and adventurous monkey called Ned!
H e i s l o o k i n g f o r w a r d t o
accompanying the children home at
weekends, and each child will have a
chance to look after him. Give him a
wave if you see him out and about!
We have seen numbers grow
significantly over the past year. We
hope that we will shortly be in a
position to employ a third member of
staff, at least for some of the busier
sessions. If you are, or know of
anyone who would be, interested in
working at the pre-school for a couple
of sessions a week or would be
available to provide cover for staff
absences (such as for training), please
let us know. There are, however, still
places available. If you would like to
enrol your child, you don’t need to
wait until a new term starts, just
contact Becky on 07530 893773.
Plans are currently underway for a
wine tasting event in November. Once
a date and time has been finalised
please put it in your diary and come
along and support us. Last year was
great fun, raised valuable funds and
you will have the chance to place
orders for Christmas.

Many of us have now had the chance
to meet Jonathan Watkins and get to
know him a little. He has been
working well to meet us and is making
valiant efforts to remember who we
are!
It may surprise you to know that
Jonathan has been ordained for twenty
years, so he has a long and varied work
experience. He began his ministry in a
crowded area of South London,
between Croydon and Sutton, and has
been working in Hampshire for 15
years in various posts. He was
chaplain to students and staff at what
was then King Alfred’s College in
Winchester, where he was keyboard
player for the gospel choir. This is his
first post in charge of a group of
parishes – actually 4 parishes, 5
churches and 2 redundant churches,
with a population of around 3,000
people.
Jonathan is working to bring the
parishes together in a comfortable
pattern of worship and shared
experiences. Already we are seeing
people from the other parishes join us
here for services, and some of our
parishioners are beginning to travel to
other villages for services.
He is very pleased with the aspects of
the church that bring in young people
and families– Tiny Tots, Funday Club,
Messy Church, secondary school
Christian Clubs and the ‘Element’
events which combine contemporary
worship with themed activities.
As you may imagine, it is difficult for
Jonathan to devote time to all the
varied aspects of his duties. He sees
himself as a slow worker, but his
priority is working with people to
make them feel valued and included.
He has enjoyed working in tandem
with church visionaries who see a way
forward and strive towards that—but
Jonathan sees his own strength in
supporting those who may feel swept
aside in the process.
Jonathan was inspired by visiting
churches in America; one in Brooklyn,
New York and another in Pittsburgh.
He wanted to see how these churches
used the various strands of music,
discipleship, pastoral and social action
to enable people to enter into life in all
its fullness. The Brooklyn church
began in the 1970s with 25 members
and now has around 6,000.
Jonathan’s main passion is music for
worship and gospel music—he feels
this brings him closer to God. He
loves art, architecture and travel (there
is always a book open in the hall at
home), and he enjoys relaxing by
leafing through these books. And he
enjoys classic cars and walking
through beautiful gardens and scenery.
If you are thinking of joining the
church family, you will receive a very
warm welcome from our new vicar—
and the rest of the congregation!

After the August break a meeting was
held on the 12th September, chaired by
our President, Thelma Blamey.
Activities of the walking group and the
Book Club have been resumed. There
was a summer outing to Avebury
Manor enjoyed by 12 members, a
memorable trip to Buckingham Palace,
and participation in the local Flower
Show in July, where the WI Cup was
won by Thelma Blamey.
Now is the time to look forward to
autumn events such as the Council
Meeting at Basingstoke in October and
a Salisbury theatre trip in November.
The programme for 2013 has been set,
with a ride range of talks.
September’s speaker was Mrs Dinah
Warnock who gave a fascinating
account of “The Mirror in History and
in Art” with its connotations of good
(self-knowledge), bad (self-
satisfaction) and very bad (vanity).
Round hand mirrors originated in
Ancient Greece and were a fashion
later taken up by the Romans who
made these small precious objects of
obsidian (dark, shiny volcanic glass).
Over the centuries, different shaped
mirrors were made in Italy – at first
very expensive and therefore rare.
Gradually their use became more
widespread. By the late 17th century
larger, flat mirrors were fixed to the
wall, whiter-looking and reflecting
different aspects of the room and the
people in it – giving a sense of space.
As recently as the 1920s and 30s
mirrors were used on bedroom
furniture.
Mrs Warnock went on to describe the
use of mirrors very cleverly angled in
well-known paintings and tapestries.
Often a beautiful woman is depicted in
gazing at her own reflection, Venus
being the most notable example. In
mythology a famous male example of
extreme vanity was Narcissus falling
in love with his own reflection in a
lake and perishing thereby.
Eventually, the mirror became a
commonplace and respectable form of
home decoration – for looking at
rather than into. The old superstition
about breaking a mirror is that it
contains the soul which, being broken,
has its revenge by inflicting 7 years’
bad luck thereafter.
It was an interesting talk, well
illustrated by slides, the last of which
was a slightly comical shot of a polar
bear gazing down at its own water
reflection!
Linda Aucock gave a vote of thanks
and the evening ended with the usual
refreshments and chat.
The next meeting will be on
Wednesday, 10th October at 7.30pm in
the Epworth Hall. Mr D Stuart will
talk about “The History and
Development of Longstock Water
Gardens”. All are very welcome.

After many hours of planning,
organising and seeking sponsorship,
Harry has sadly decided to put an end
to his proposed epic cycle ride across
America. Lack of funds and the
possibility of no companions made it
far from easy to organise.
But, still keen to raise money for
BLESMA, Harry has decided to
choose an endeavour that fits well with
University and one that isn’t too
costly.
You may remember that, in 2011,
Harry completed the 180 mile trek
across England from St Bees in the
Lake District to Robin Hoods Bay in
Yorkshire. Now he is planning a
similar long distance walk. This is
known as the Cape Wrath Trail, is just
short of 200 miles long and runs from
Fort William to the most north-
westerly tip of the Scottish mainland.
It is a challenging and often remote
route through Morar, Knoydart,
Torridon and Assynt. (For more
information about this route, visit
http://capewrathtrailguide.org/)
Harry will be undertaking this over a
period of two weeks in June of 2013.
Carrying over 25kg of equipment on
his back will make it far from easy.
He will be striving for as much
publicity and as many donations as
possible for BLESMA. This charity
helps our service men and women who
lose limbs, the use of limbs or eyes in
the service of our country. The
charity’s work starts with
rehabilitation - proving that there is
life after amputation. But they also
provide life-long support and
campaign for what the service men and
women deserve.
Harry’s new plan

MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT
BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING IN THE WORLD
At St Mary’s Church, Broughton
On Saturday 20 October
Between 10.00am and 12 noon
There will be a warm welcome to everyone who comes along to enjoy a cup of
coffee, delicious biscuits and a chat with friends. The very popular Bring and
Buy Table will be laden with goodies, so bring along lovely gifts, home made
jams, cakes and produce. This will all help towards the support Macmillan
offers people who are receiving treatment. £25 pays for one hour for a
Macmillan nurse to support a family affected by cancer and £138 pays for three
hours of free confidential support and information.
Broughton’s coffee mornings have raised £3,327 over the last six years and we
are keen to help even more this year.
We look forward to seeing you on 20 October.

Home Group We meet at 8.00pm usually on the third Thursday of each month.
We are a relatively small group of Christians from different traditions who meet
for informal study, discussion and fellowship and we would very much
welcome any newcomers who care to come along and join us.
Contact Nigel Coleman on 01794 388 449 for more information.
Do you know anyone who is new to the
village, is lonely or housebound and who might need some
support? If so, please ring Fi Chilton on 01794 388160 and we
can arrange for one of our visitors to drop in and see them.
Prayer Meeting We hold our prayer meetings on the first Monday of each month at
2.15pm. We meet for about an hour at Margaret Babb’s house at ‘Ferndale’,
Winchester Road, when we pray for our parish, families, friends and anyone
else in need.
If you have any prayer requests there are slips on the table at the back of the
church which you may put into the box provided or alternatively phone me,
Dulcie Witts on 01794 388267.
Our meeting is very informal and we should be pleased to welcome new
members.
After a quiet summer, we are now
looking forward to the Harvest Festival
at Ashley St. Mary. This will be held
on Sunday 30th September at 3.00pm.
Please note that this is slightly earlier
than in previous years because Rev
Jonathan Watkins has another service
before coming up to Ashley.
Refreshments will be served after the
service and everybody is very
welcome.
As a result of this earlier start, the
AGM of the Friends will begin at
2.30pm.

Our first session back after the summer
holidays saw us thinking about our
friends and how important they are.
We made flowers for a friendship tree
and paper plate pictures of ourselves,
which are all displayed at the back of
the church.
We will be starting to talk about
Harvest over the next few weeks and
will be thinking about where our food
comes from and how best to share it,

The Vicar has the last word Last month Rosie, our Methodist Minister, wrote about Harvest, giving thanks
and gratitude. In the Test Valley Benefice I now have six harvests to be thankful
for this year! By the time you get this edition of The Gauntlet, three will have
taken place in September with three still to come in October.
Thanksgiving should be a major part of our prayers and prayer is something that
both Bishop Jonathan and I have been encouraging since he came to meet with all
the PCC members from the parishes back in July. Through the centuries and in
my own experience it seems that the more time Christians spend in prayer the
more answers they get. The way ahead can become clearer. John Wesley the
18th century preacher and founder of Methodism said this “I have so much to do
that I must spend several hours in prayer before I am able to do it”!
Prayer is less about changing God’s mind and more about saying we care about
the things He cares about and getting our hearts, minds and wills in line with
God’s heart, mind and will. Some of us find praying difficult so it’s good to have
a plan. One good plan for prayer time on your own or with others is to use the
ACTS mnemonic
Adoration - worship and praise for who God is and what he has done
Confession - asking God’s forgiveness for the things we have done wrong
Thanksgiving – for family, friends and the good things we have
Supplication – praying for the world, others and ourselves.
At Harvest time the ACTS pattern could work like this
Adoration - for God’s work in the beauty of creation
Confession - for damage to the planet and our failure to care for creation
Thanksgiving- for food and clothing and the earth’s resources
Supplication - for where harvests have failed and many face drought or famine.
I want to tell you about something I believe to be an answer to recent prayers. A
retired priest, Revd Hazel O’Sullivan, moved into the area in the last year. Hazel
has visited the churches, met the churchwardens and taken some services when I
was away, including a Parish Communion and a funeral in King’s Somborne.
She is now offering some time to work with us voluntarily, initially for six
months, from late October. Do make Hazel feel welcome if you meet her.
Finally, on Thursday 11th October at 7.30pm, there will be a special service in
the Parish church of St Peter and St Paul to celebrate the new benefice. Bishop
Jonathan Frost and Archdeacon Peter Rouch will both be there and all are
welcome to come along.
I hope you will find some time to pray this month.
